Aplastic anaemia occurring in pregnancy is a rare event with life threatening challenges for both mother and child. We present a successful fetomaternal outcome despite the challenges in the management of this rare condition in a tertiary but resource poor centre. This is case of a 37 year old Nigerian woman G6P0+5managed with repeated blood transfusions from 28 weeks of gestation for bone marrow biopsy confirmed aplastic anaemia following presentation with weakness and gingival bleeds. She had a cesarean section at 37 weeks for pre-eclampsia and oligohydraminous with good feto-maternal outcom

Placenta previa, a major cause of antepartum hemorrhage, results from abnormal placental implantation over or near the cervical os. It is associated with risk factors such as prior cesarean section, multiparity and advanced maternal age, contributing to significant maternal morbidity and adverse perinatal outcomes. To evaluate the risk factors associated with placenta previa and to assess its maternal and fetal outcomes among affected pregnancies. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Community Based Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from January 2025 to December 2025, including 35

OBJECTIVE: To provide family physicians with an understanding of blood bank tests performed during pregnancy. The value of routine blood type and antibody tests, as well as the follow-up required when a patient develops a red blood cell antibody or experiences a fetal-maternal hemorrhage (FMH) will be reviewed.
SOURCES OF INFORMATION: The approach described is based on the authors' clinical expertise and peer-reviewed literature from 1967 to 2020.
MAIN MESSAGE: An ABO and RhD group and antibody screen test is performed on every pregnant patient during the first trimester. Although antibodies

INTRODUCTION: Fatal antepartum fetomaternal hemorrhage is a relatively uncommon clinical presentation, though one that appears quickly and without warning. The pathophysiology of this disease is unclear, and the incidence does not appear to be decreasing in line with overall antepartum mortality. This study was undertaken to analyse trends in antepartum fetal death from fetomaternal hemorrhage over a 25-year period in a single maternity hospital in Dublin, Ireland.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 192 132 nonanomalous infants weighing 500 g or more, delivered in a single terti

Fetomaternal hemorrhage induced by intraplacental choriocarcinoma is considered to be extremely rare. We herein describe a neonate with severe anemia caused by intraplacental choriocarcinoma that was histopathologically identified after birth. Furthermore, we reviewed three other such cases in Japan. As a result, the incidence of intraplacental choriocarcinoma may be higher than previously estimated. Therefore, we suggest that the placenta should be examined in any suspected cases of fetomaternal hemorrhage.

Chronic fetomaternal hemorrhage led to the development of fetal anemia and nonimmune hydrops fetalis in a term neonate. Antenatal maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein levels were abnormally elevated, with normal amniotic fluid levels. Kleihauer-Betke staining was performed as part of the evaluation. Serial ultrasound examinations can be useful for unexplained elevations in maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein because of the associated increased fetal loss in those pregnancies. If fetomaternal hemorrhage is identified, serial ultrasound examinations are indicated for the detection of fetal hydrops.

We report a case of choriocarcinoma in situ arising from a term placenta in an otherwise normal pregnancy that resulted in fetal hydrops and intrauterine fetal death from chronic fetal-maternal hemorrhage (FMH). The clinical and pathologic features are described and compared with the few similar cases reported and with an additional placental choriocarcinoma found in our files. We also describe the clinical and pathologic observations of two chorangiomas that caused massive FMH and led to fetal death.

Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia is a rare (1/1000-5000 births) life-threatening disorder, caused by fetomaternal incompatibility for a fetal human platelet alloantigen inherited from the father, with production of maternal alloantibodies against fetal platelets, leading to severe thrombocytopenia and potential bleeding. Intracranial haemorrhage is the most feared complication. This report presents the case of a term newborn infant, born from caesarean section after a normal pregnancy, presenting signs of skin bleeding with different ages. Obstetric history included a previous spontaneous

Prior to 1970, maternal alloimmunization was the leading cause of perinatal death. Currently, it has become rarer thanks to screening and monitoring in high-risk pregnancies. The advent of transcranial doppler has been a turning point in the monitoring of these pregnancies, as it is a reliable, non-invasive method for the diagnosis of fetal anemia. This helps clinicians decide whether or not to perform intrauterine transfusion. Anti-D immunoprophylaxis has also played an important role in preventing fetal and neonatal hemolytic anemia and its administration is currently well codified. Adequate

When any fetal blood group factor inherited from the father is not possessed by the mother, antepartum or intrapartum fetal-maternal bleeding may stimulate an immune reaction in the mother. Maternal immune reactions also can occur from blood product transfusion. The formation of maternal antibodies, or "alloimmunization," may lead to various degrees of transplacental passage of these antibodies into the fetal circulation. Depending on the degree of antigenicity and the amount and type of antibodies involved, this transplacental passage may lead to hemolytic disease in the fetus and neonate. Un

We describe biochemical assessment of maternal circulation in a case of massive fetomaternal hemorrhage at term associated with intraplacental choriocarcinoma. Markedly elevated maternal serum hCG level at 37 weeks of gestation suggested choriocarcinoma as a cause of fetomaternal hemorrhage in this case. Measurement of maternal hCG may be a useful parameter when intraplacental choriocarcinoma is in the differential diagnosis. In addition, the placenta should be examined in all cases of fetomaternal hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: To assess accuracy of a management program in patients at risk for alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAITP) and to describe perinatal outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: Nineteen fetuses at risk of thrombocytopenia were identified using obstetric history, HLA type of the mother and fetal phenotyping in cases where paternal heterozygozity for the offending antigen was present. Cordocentesis was timed according to obstetric history and performed with safety precautions to prevent haemorrhage. High dose intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG) was administered to the mother in cases with a fetal platelet cou

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to determine the circumstances in which feto-maternal hemorrhage (FMH) should be investigated, and how to assess its volume and whether it is acute or chronic, in order to build guidelines for appropriate management.
METHODS: The French College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (CNGOF) conducted a formalized expert consensus method.
RESULTS: Feto-maternal hemorrhage (FMH) is defined as the passage of fetal blood into the maternal circulation through a breach in the feto-placental barrier during pregnancy or childbirth. For the diagnosis of FMH, it is recommended

OBJECTIVES: Massive fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) is rare and reported to be the cause in approximately 3% of all fetal deaths. Maternal management of massive FMH includes prevention of Rh(D) alloimmunization in Rh(D)-negative mothers by administration of Rh(D) immune globulin (RhIG).
METHODS: We describe a case of a 30-year-old O-negative, primigravida woman who presented at 38 weeks of gestation with decreased fetal movements. She underwent an emergency cesarean section and delivered an O-positive baby girl who died shortly after birth.
RESULTS: The patient's FMH screen was positive, with

BACKGROUND: We previously reported fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) in 1/9160 births, and only one neonatal death from FMH among 219,853 births. Recent reports indicate FMH is not uncommon among stillbirths. Consequently, we speculated we were missing cases among early neonatal deaths. We began a new FMH initiative to determine the current incidence.
METHODS: We analyzed births from 2011 to 2020 where FMH was diagnosed. We also evaluated potential cases among neonates receiving an emergent transfusion just after birth, whose mothers were not tested for FMH.
RESULTS: Among 297,403 births, 1375 m

BACKGROUND: Detection and quantitation of fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) can be difficult in patients with pre-existing elevations of HbF, such as those with hemoglobinopathies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of dual-color flow cytometry with the Fetal Cell Count Kit (FCCK) in differentiating adult and fetal HbF in this population, as compared to flow cytometry (FC) using HbF alone.
METHODS: Peripheral blood was obtained from normal adults and patients with hemoglobinopathies (β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease), including a small number of pregnant females. Cord blood wa

BACKGROUND: Fetal-maternal hemorrhage is usually spontaneous and goes undetected but can be associated with adverse perinatal outcomes.
CASE: We describe the detection of a fetal-maternal hemorrhage by abrupt disappearance of prophylactic anti-D on antibody screen in an Rh-negative mother with dichorionic twins admitted for atrial flutter of one twin. Both rosette and Kleihauer-Betke tests were positive. The diagnosis was confirmed by anemia in one twin at birth.
CONCLUSION: Fetal-maternal hemorrhage requires a high index of suspicion for diagnosis. An unexpected sudden decline in Rh immune
