Management of Peripheral Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma.

Peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma (PCOF) is a rare, reactive osteogenic neoplasm that presents as an epulis-like growth with unknown pathogenesis. This lesion commonly affects the younger generation. Frequently associated with the maxilla, it is more common in the anterior region. Here, we present a rare case of a 54-year-old male patient with a painless gingival swelling in the mandible for a period of one year. Prompt diagnosis through complete radiographic and histopathologic examination is critical for proper diagnosis of this lesion. Proper surgical removal with complete curettage is e…

Psammomatoid variant of juvenile ossifying fibroma.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare benign tumor of the craniofacial bones differing from other fibro-osseous lesions in terms of early age of onset, aggressive clinical behavior, and high recurrence rate. Histopathologically, it is divided into two as trabecular JOF (TrJOF) and psammomatoid JOF (PsJOF). In PsJOF, psammoma-like spherical ossicles constitute pathognomonic histopathological images, whereas TrJOF has trabeculae of fibrillary osteoid and woven bone. Despite the histopathologic separation, both lesions have similar clinical behavior, thus the treatment procedure is also the …

Recurrent peripheral ossifying fibroma: Case report.

Most of the reactive lesions in the oral cavity arise from gingiva. Fibroma, focal fibrous hyperplasia, pyogenic granuloma, and peripheral ossifying fibroma are the commonly encountered lesions of gingiva. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) frequently arises from the peripheral tissues like gingiva. It is commonly found in females, mostly in the anterior of the molar region. POF is predicted to arise from the cells of periodontal ligament due to close proximity of gingiva to periodontal ligament. Its exact origin is unclear. The present article describes the case of recurrent peripheral ossify…

[Non-ossifying fibroma (metaphyseal fibrous defect)].

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) or metaphyseal fibrous defect (MFD) is benign fibroblast proliferation with the presence of osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells. The most cases of NOF/MFD occur in the metaphysis of the long tubular bones of the lower extremities, more commonly in the metaphysis of the femur and in the proximal metaphysis of the tibia. This lesion has a characteristic X-ray pattern and requires no surgical intervention, except for cases of a pathologic fracture or a risk for the latter. The paper analyzes 35 NOF/MFD cases in children and adolescents. It has been found that on…

Peripheral fibroma obstructing the eruption pathway.

Reactive hyperplasias comprise a group of fibrous connective tissue lesions that commonly occur in oral mucosa secondary to injury. Peripheral fibroma is also a type of reactive hyperplasia. Peripheral fibroma is a reactive hyperplastic mass that occurs on the gingiva and is derived from connective tissue of the submucosa or periodontal ligament. It may occur at any age, although it does have a predilection for young adults. Females develop these lesions more commonly than do males. Here, we are presenting a case report of a child who is 6 years old and presented to us with a swelling in the l…

Recurrent peripheral odontogenic fibroma. Case report.

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POF), an extraosseous variant of the central odontogenic fibroma, is considered an uncommon benign gingival lesion with a small recurrence rate. Clinically, it mimics a variety of benign neoplasms, metastases and reactive lesions, but it is most commonly confused with the peripheral ossifying fibroma. In this report, we describe a healthy 32-year-old male who was seen with a recurrent POF of the right maxilla. The surgical excision site was repaired using a free palatal graft, leading to a favorable outcome in an esthetic region of the oral cavity.

Maxillary ameloblastic fibroma: a case report.

Ameloblastic fibroma is a relatively rare benign odontogenic tumor in which both the epithelial and ectomesenchymal components are neoplastic. An 8-year-old Caucasian boy was referred to the dentist for evaluation of failed eruption of the maxillary left first molar. The panoramic radiograph showed a well-circumscribed unilocular radiolucency involving an unerupted maxillary left first permanent molar. The lesion was enucleated and the material was sent for histopathologic examination. Microscopically, it was composed by cords and islands of odontogenic epithelium in a myxoid cell-rich stroma …

[Intra-arterial embolisation of uterine fibroma].

UNLABELLED: Uterine fibroid are benign tumors that consist most of the tumor occurrences in pelvic cavity of women. Possible courses of trea … in 11 (30%) patients in a relatively mild form. CONCLUSION: Intra-arterial embolisation of uterine fibroma is a method that in large percent of patients removes symptoms of uterine fibroma presence, prevents its growth, and safely helps women enter menopause when activity of hormone dependant tumor ceases.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma: a case study.

We present the case of an 8-year-old patient with a juvenile ossifying fibroma in the right mandibular angle and a radicular cyst in the left mandibular angle, which produced a major swelling at the level of the mandibular angles and prevented the correct eruption of the lower first molars. After the clinical and radiological (panoramic X-ray and dental scan of the mandible), the corresponding surgical treatment (cystectomy and remodelling) and histopathological study were carried out. Although juvenile ossifying fibroma is an uncommon clinical entity, its aggressive local behaviour and high r…

Peripheral odontogenic fibroma with chondroid differentiation.

An unusual case of peripheral odontogenic fibroma, presenting as a swelling on gingiva involving hard palate in a 3-year-old female child, is described. Even with cellular stroma and unencapsulation these tumors behave in a benign fashion. To the best of our knowledge, cartilagenous differentiation of stroma as observed in this case has not been reported in English literature so far.

[Hormone dependence of juvenile nasopharyngeal fibroma].

Since Martin (1948) and Schiff (1959) first reported the use of sex hormones in JNF patients, many authors have described the various clinical effects and histological changes found after administration of androgens or estrogens. In 1980, Johns attempted unsuccessfully to detect estrogen receptors in the tissue of tumors from JNF patients. In 1987, however, Farag et al. succeeded in the demonstration of androgen receptors in homogenates of such tumor tissue.--In 1989, the authors were able to determine the uptake and receptor-binding of radioactively labelled dihydrotestosterone in cultured fi

[Chondromyxoid fibroma: radiologic and radioisotope aspects].

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a relatively rare benign bone tumor whose histologic and radiologic patterns are well known. In this article, we describe a 16-year-old boy with such a tumor in his left tibia. Scintigraphically, this tumor is represented by a "doughnut sign". This aspect, though not pathognomonic, has been reported sporadically in a few diseases: osteoporosis circumscripta cranii, angioblastic meningioma, cranial coccidioidomycosis, and aseptic necrosis of frontal bone. Because of their sites, it is easy to reject these diagnoses in our patient. The most pertinent differential diagnos…

Ameloblastic fibroma: report of two cases.

Two cases of ameloblastic fibroma are described. One case was a seven-year-old girl, the other a 13-year-old boy. In both cases the tumour was located in the posterior part of the maxilla. Both neoplasms were associated with failure of tooth eruption, in one case a primary molar, in the other case a permanent molar. Local excision was performed in both cases, with a recurrence observed in one case ten months after surgery.

Sclerotic fibroma-like change in various neoplastic and inflammatory skin lesions: is sclerotic fibroma a distinct entity?

Sclerotic fibroma was first described in association with Cowden's disease by Weary et al. in 1972. In 1989, Rapini and Golitz detailed 11 cases of solitary sclerotic fibroma (SFS) in the absence of Cowden's disease, suggesting the term SFS of the skin. Classic histological features include hypocellular, hyalinized bands of collagen sharply demarcated from the surrounding skin. Numerous authors have described sclerotic fibroma-like changes in other entities including melanocytic nevi, dermatofibromas, lipomas, tendon sheath fibromas, giant cell collagenomas, neurofibromas, angiofibromas, eryth…
