Localized gingival enlargement associated with alveolar process expansion: peripheral ossifying fibroma coincident with central odontogenic fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common occurrence of localized gingival enlargements, which often represent reactive lesions, the temporal and spatial association of such a lesion with a central jaw lesion has not been reported. The purpose of this case report is to present the exceptional combination of a peripheral ossifying fibroma and a central odontogenic fibroma. The differential diagnosis and management of each lesion is reviewed. METHODS: A 45-year-old black female presented with a chief complaint of a painless protuberance in the left mandible of 1-year duration. Clinical and radiographic ex

A case report on peripheral cemento-ossifying fibroma in South India.

Gingival enlargement is a common manifestation of gingival diseases and it is characterized by increase in size of the gingiva. A 20-year-old male reported with the primary complaint of swelling in lower front teeth region for the past 7 month. Patient noticed the swelling to be small when it started and gradually increased to attain the present size. There was no contributing history of bleeding or pain. Excision of the lesion was done using electrocautery followed by histopathological analysis. The challenge for clinicians lies in accurately diagnosing the underlying cause due to the diverse

Psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma of frontal sinus - surgical and reconstructive approach.

Psammomatoid juvenile ossifying fibroma (PJOF) is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that mainly affects the paranasal sinuses and periorbital bones. It may cause significant esthetic and functional impairment. Herein, we describe the diagnosis and surgical approach of an extensive PJOF arising in the frontal sinus of a young male. After complete lesion removal and histopathological confirmation, the bone defect was repaired with a customized polymethylmethacrylate implant. PJOF may present aggressive clinical behavior. The excision of extensive PJOF in the orbitofrontal area can result in signific

Non-ossifying Fibroma Pathological Fracture in a Patient With Lactose Intolerance.

Non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) is a frequently occurring benign tumor of children and adolescents. In the long bones, it appears as an eccentric, expanded lesion in the metaphyseal diaphyseal area. Most cases are asymptomatic and resolve at a later age while others might become symptomatic and have a high risk of fracture. We present a case of a 15-year-old boy who is known to have lactose intolerance, suffered a pathological fracture following trauma, and was diagnosed with non-ossifying fibroma of the proximal tibia. The etiology of these lesions is not well-known. However, there might be a rel

Juvenile ossifying fibroma in a Nigerian boy: a rare case report.

Cases of jaw masses abound in our environment which is a tropical one, with Burkitt lymphoma being the commonest aetiology. However rarer causes like juvenile aggressive ossifying fibroma should also be considered. It is a locally aggressive tumor with high recurrent potentials occurring in children and adolescent. Here we present the clinical features, physical findings and challenges in diagnosing and management of a 7-year-old boy who presented to the Paediatric unit of our institute with a right jaw mass.

Ossifying fibroma: an uncommon differential diagnosis for T2-hypointense sinonasal masses.

Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that occurs most commonly in the mandible of female patients. In rare cases, it affects the nasal cavity. The magnetic resonance imaging features may vary depending on the amount of fibrous and bony tissue in its composition. In these tumors, T2-hypointensity is a feature described in the peripheral ossified areas of the lesion, but it may present diffusely, especially when the degree of ossification is extensive. In this scenario, this particular characteristic on T2-weighted imaging is superimposable to the commonly described appearance of o

Surgical Management of Ossifying Fibroma in Maxilla: Report of Two Cases.

Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign osteogenic neoplasm arising from undifferentiated cells of the periodontal ligament. Ossifying fibroma have a well-defined border that differentiates it from fibrous dysplasia clinically, these tumors manifest as a round or ovoid, expansile, painless, slow-growing mass may displace the roots of adjacent teeth and also cause root resorption. They occur at second to fourth decade of life. Radiologically the lesion appears as a dense radiopaque mass surrounded by a thin, well-defined regular radiolucent rim. Patient underwent thorough history taking and complete

Case report: Trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma presenting as a sellar mass.

A 15-year-old girl presented with left occulomotor nerve palsy and was found to have a space occupying lesion of the sellar region with invasion of the left cavernous sinus. A transsphenoidal approach lead to subtotal removal of a solid tumor with some remnants in the cavernous sinus and revealed the diagnosis of trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF). A repeat magnetic resonance imaging was obtained within 1 month that showed intrasellar recurrence and growing tumor in the cavernous sinus. Therefore, a combined transsphenoidal and transcranial approach was performed to more aggressively

Interrelationship between pyogenic granuloma and peripheral ossifying fibroma: a case report.

Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) is an inflammatory hyperplasia which is non-neoplastic in nature. Because of the high incidence of oral PG, critical need exists for its proper diagnosis and treatment. Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma (POF) is a focal reactive overgrowth occurring in young adults. Though clinically similar to PG, it is important to differentiate the lesions based on the histopathological findings that facilitate the management of the lesion, which is diverse in nature when compared to PG. Proper treatment of such overgrowths and appropriate oral hygiene instructions shall ensure no recurre

Peripheral ossifying fibroma: a clinical and immunohistochemical study of four cases.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a lesion of the gingival tissues that predominantly affects women and is usually located in the maxilla anterior to the molars. The definitive diagnosis is established by histological examination, which reveals the presence of cellular connective tissue with focal calcifications. Surgery is the treatment of choice, though the recurrence rate can reach 20%. We present a clinical and histological review - including a detailed immunohistochemical analysis - of four cases of POF diagnosed and treated at our hospital. All four patients were women, and two were

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma with secondary aneurysmal bone cyst of frontal sinus.

INTRODUCTION: Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (POF) is a rare, slowly progressive tumor of the extragnathic craniofacial bones, with a tendency toward locally aggressive behavior. CASE REPORT: The pathognomonic histologic feature is the presence of spherical ossicles, which are similar to psammoma bodies. DISCUSSION: Fibro-osseous lesions composed of POF and aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the frontal sinus in a 12-year-old boy is reported, followed by a literature review. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the second case of a fibro-osseous lesion composed of ossifying fibroma with reactiv

Cemento-ossifying Fibroma Of Paranasal Sinus Presenting Acutely As Orbital Cellulitis.

Fibro-osseous lesions of the face and paranasal sinuses are relatively uncommon. These lesions have overlapping clinical, radiologic and pathologic features causing difficulty in diagnosis. Neoplastic fibro-osseous paranasal sinus lesions can be benign or malignant. The benign fibro-osseous lesions described are: ossifying fibroma (and its histologic variants) and fibrous dysplasia. The variants of ossifying fibroma differ in the nature of calcified material (i.e. cementum versus bone), in the location of the lesion (oral versus paranasal sinus or orbital), other morphologic variations (presen

Ossifying fibroma of sphenoid bone with coexistent mucocele: CT and MRI.

A case of a 26-year-old woman with decreasing vision in her right eye, diplopia, headache, and galactorrhea is presented. Both CT and MR studies showed a large sphenoid fibroosseous lesion that had a ground glass appearance on CT and low-to-intermediate proton density and low T2-weighted and low T1-weighted signal intensities on MR. After contrast medium administration, this process diffusely enhanced on CT and MR. There was also an expansile mass in the sphenoid sinus that had intermediate proton density, high T2-weighted and low T1-weighted signal intensities compared with brain. This mass d
