UNLABELLED: Fetal hydrops associated with neonatal tumours is an uncommon occurrence. The diagnosis can be established prenatally by ultrasound examination. The treatment of choice is surgery which may be curative. We report the case of a male born at 32 weeks gestation who presented with severe hydrops fetalis and a thoracic mass. The child could not be operated upon because of rapid clinical deterioration. The autopsy findings confirmed the diagnosis of congenital fibrosarcoma. This is, to our knowledge, the first case of hydrops fetalis associated with fibrosarcoma.

A 12-year-old, castrated male, domestic shorthair cat with a previous penetrating trauma to the left globe which progressed to a phthisical eye presented for acute blindness. Ophthalmic examination and electroretinography of the right eye were found to be normal. Following euthanasia, gross and microscopic examinations were completed. A left intraocular, posttraumatic fibrosarcoma with extension to the optic nerve and chiasm and induced right optic nerve fiber degeneration at the optic chiasm with necrosis leading to central amaurosis were diagnosed.

Supravoltage irradiation is commonly thought not to be carcinogenic. Several recent studies question this concept, as does our case report. We report here on two black African girls who developed an acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The first patient was a premature girl born to healthy parents. She suffered from interstitial pneumonitis during the first week of life and died of it at the age of 6 months. Her mother, although asymptomatic, had polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia, a reversed T-helper/T-suppressor ratio and a decreased lymphocyte response to mitogens. Fibrosarcoma is rare in the pediatric age group. It generally involves the extremities and the trunk but rarely involves the genital area. We report a case of a large fungating infantile fibrosarcoma of the penis in a 2-year-old Malay boy. Partial recovery of the penile structure was achieved after chemotherapy. The difficulty in managing the social and surgical aspect of this case is discussed in our report. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of infantile fibrosarcoma involving the penis in an Asian region.

An abdominal fibrosarcoma surrounding a retained surgical swab was identified in a 3-year-old neutered female rottweiler dog presented with chronic inappetence and lethargy. Laparotomy revealed a mass within the omentum, multiple hepatic masses and enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. The dog was humanely destroyed and submitted for necropsy examination. We report a 12-year-old boy with primary bronchopulmonary fibrosarcoma (PBPF). He was misdiagnosed a having asthma until he presented with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Chest x-ray showed atelectasis of the right lung. Bronchoscopy performed to rule out foreign body inhalation revealed a friable mass obstructing the right main bronchus. Successful treatment was achieved with surgical resection of the lesion followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Fibrosarcomas involving the sella turcica are rare lesions and, when encountered, have been associated with previous radiation of a pituitary adenoma. Normal tissue damage in the legs of mice was enhanced by the presence of a fibrosarcoma (FSa I) in the leg at the time of treatment with single doses of 30 to 70 Gy. Damage was assessed by measuring leg contracture 23 to 365 days after irradiation of 8 mm diameter tumors. Animals with and without tumors were treated with 1.0 mg misonidazole/g body weight 30 min before irradiation to ensure that the tumors did not recur and interfere with the assessment of contracture. The data suggest that in some cases, late damage may be enhanced by destructive effects of the tumor on the tumor bed.
