Production of Fish Protein Hydrolysates from Scyliorhinus canicula Discards with Antihypertensive and Antioxidant Activities by Enzymatic Hydrolysis and Mathematical Optimization Using Response Surface Methodology.

Fish discards are of major concern in new EU policies. Alternatives for the management of the new biomass that has to be landed is compulsory. The production of bioactive compounds from fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) has been explored in recent years. However, the viability of Scyliorhinus canicula discards, which might account for up to 90-100% of captures in mixed trawler, gillnet, and longline industrial fisheries, to produce FPH from the muscle with bioactivities has still not been studied in terms of the optimization of the experimental conditions to enhance its production. The effect of

Apple flavonols and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-rich fish oil lowers blood C-reactive protein in rats with hypercholesterolemia and acute inflammation.

Both quercetin glycosides and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) are well established for their individual health benefits in ameliorating metabolic disease. However, their combined effects are not well documented. It was hypothesized that the beneficial properties of quercetin glycosides can be enhanced when provided in combination with n-3 PUFA. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of apple flavonols (AF) and fish oil (FO), alone and in combination, on proinflammatory biomarkers and lipid profiles in rats fed a high-fat diet. Sixty male Wistar ra

Effect of Nano- and Microparticulate Fermented Fish Protein Hydrolysate Diets on Growth, Digestive Function, Intestinal Development, and Gene Expression in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) Larvae.

The early larval stage is a major bottleneck in freshwater aquaculture because conventional live feeds are not always available for optimum nutrient availability and digestibility to satisfy the nutritional requirements of developing larvae. This study evaluated the effects of micro- and nano-particulate fermented and fish protein hydrolysate-based diets on growth, digestive enzyme activity, intestinal morphology, and immune-related gene expression in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) larvae. Four experimental diets, namely fish hydrolysate-based micro-feed (FHMF), fermented micro-feed (FMF), fish

Age-related decline of motor unit firing rate in community-dwelling healthy older adults and daily ingestion of fish protein of Alaska pollack: a randomised trial.

Neuromuscular properties decline with ageing and low-level physical activities. Alaska pollack protein (APP) is reportedly effective for improving skeletal muscular functions, even if the amount is small and exercise is not conducted. However, it is unclear whether APP intake without an exercise program affects neuromuscular dysfunction in community-dwelling adults conducting normal, everyday activities. This study aimed to investigate changes in motor unit firing properties by adding APP to daily meals in community-dwelling older adults. They were divided into an APP group or a placebo contro

Modulation of C-reactive protein and plasma omega-6 fatty acid levels by phospholipase A2 gene polymorphisms following a 6-week supplementation with fish oil.

This clinical trial investigated the impact of a six-week supplementation with fish oil and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in PLA2G4A and PLA2G6 genes on total omega-6 fatty acid (n-6 FA) levels in plasma phospholipids (PL) and plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in 191 subjects. Interaction effects between SNPs and supplementation modulated total n-6 FAs and CRP levels in both men and women. Associations between SNPs and total n-6 FA levels and between SNPs and CRP levels were identified in men, independently of supplementation. Supplementation decreased total n-6 FAs without affec

Incorporation of nanoscale fishbone enhances frozen snakehead fish slice quality via synergistic mechanisms: Pickering emulsion oxygen barrier and TGase-mediated protein crosslinking.

This study elucidated the mechanism of nanoscale fishbone (NFB) enhancing quality of the marinated fish slices. Compared to control (without NFB), peroxide value, malonaldehyde content, and proportion of saturated fatty acids extracted from NFB marinade were significantly lower after 9 freeze-thaw cycles. The NFB incorporation significantly mitigated the freeze-thaw induced surface hydrophobicity while reducing sulfhydryl loss. The oxidation inhibition indicated an oxygen-barrier effect likely formed by NFB stabilized Pickering emulsion as evident by Cryo-SEM and confocal microscopy. Additiona

A randomized controlled cross-over trial of differences in acute effects on serum metabolites from isocaloric meals based on red meat, fatty fish, or soy protein.

PURPOSE: Reducing red meat intake in the Western diet is beneficial for health and the environment. However, red meat is nutrient-rich, so understanding the impact of substituting it with other protein sources such as fish or plant-based proteins is essential, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly and those with chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to study the postprandial response in serum metabolites in women with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) after intake of red meat, fatty fish, and soy protein. METHODS: Women with RA (n = 24) consumed isocaloric meals that included bu

Red-grouper nervous necrosis virus B1 protein inhibits fish IFN response by targeting Ser5-phosphorylated RNA polymerase II to promote viral replication.

Nervous necrosis virus (NNV) could infect more than 200 fish species worldwide, with almost 100% mortality in affected larvae and juvenile fish. Among different genotypes of NNV, the red-grouper nervous necrosis virus (RGNNV) genotype is the most widely reported with the highest number of susceptible species. Interferon (IFN) is a crucial antiviral cytokine and RGNNV needs to develop some efficient strategies to resist host IFN-stimulated antiviral immune. Although considerable researches on RGNNV, whether RGNNV B1 protein participates in regulating the host's IFN response remains unknown. Her

Digestive tract morphology and enzyme activities of juvenile diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) fed fishmeal-based diets with or without fish protein hydrolysates.

Triploid, sterile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) could make a contribution to the development of the farming industry, but uncertainties about the performance and welfare of triploids have limited their adoption by farmers. In this study, we compared the ontogeny of digestive tract morphology and enzyme activities (pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, alkaline phosphatase and aminopeptidase) of diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon. Fish were fed diets based on fishmeal (STD) or a mix of fishmeal and hydrolysed fish proteins (HFM) whilst being reared at low temperature from start-feeding to completion…

Effects of Partial Replacing Fish Meal with Dietary Degossypolled Cottonseed Protein on Growth Performance, Intestinal Barrier, Immune Function and Antioxidant Response in Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides).

The increasing need for aquafeed protein sources calls for sustainable substitutes for fish meal (FM). Degossypolled cottonseed protein (DCP) represents a promising plant-derived protein, but its impact on the intestinal health of carnivorous fish is not well understood. This study assessed how partial replacing FM with DCP affects growth performance, intestinal barrier integrity, immune function, and antioxidant status in juvenile largemouth bass. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were prepared, in which DCP replaced 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, or 80% of the FM. Following an 8-week feeding pe

Low Carbohydrate Diet Containing Soy Protein and Fish Oil Reduces AOM/DSS-Induced Colon Cancer, in Part, by an Acetate-Mediated Reduction in TH17 Cell Differentiation.

Since our previous studies found a low-carbohydrate (CHO) diet containing soy protein and fish oil (i.e., 15%Amylose/Soy/FO) significantly reduced tobacco carcinogen-induced lung nodules in A/J mice, breast tumors in C3(1)/Tag mice, and myelomalignancy in miR-146a knockout mice, we asked herein if this CHO diet could also reduce colorectal cancer. We tested the efficacy of the 15%Amylose/Soy/FO diet in preventing colitis-induced colorectal cancer using an azoxymethane/dextran sodium sulfate BALB/c mouse model. The 15%Amylose/Soy/FO diet significantly reduced colon tumor numbers compared to a W

Comparison of the diagnostic performance of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), nuclear matrix protein 22 (NMP22), and their combination model in bladder carcinoma detection: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emerging studies reported that combination of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and nuclear matrix protein 22 (NMP22) could increase the sensitivity and specificity of bladder carcinoma (BC) management. Nevertheless, the reports remain inconsistent. This meta-analysis was undertaken to evaluate the diagnostic performance of FISH, NMP22, and their combination model in BC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang database dated up to Octobe

Competitive binding of maltodextrin and pectin at the interface of whey protein hydrolyzate-based fish oil emulsion under high temperature sterilization: Effects on storage stability and in vitro digestion.

Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH), maltodextrin (MD), low methoxy pectin (LMP) and high methoxy pectin (HMP) were used to study the interface binding under high temperature sterilization conditions (121 °C, 15 min). The effect of competitive binding of MD and pectin with interface protein on the storage stability and gastrointestinal fate of fish oil emulsion was studied. The low-molecular-weight MD and the interface protein undergo a wide range of covalent binding through the Maillard reaction, while a small amount of high-molecular-weight pectin can form a protective shell with the interface pr

Adding Fish Oil to Whey Protein, Leucine, and Carbohydrate Over a Six-Week Supplementation Period Attenuates Muscle Soreness Following Eccentric Exercise in Competitive Soccer Players.

Soccer players often experience eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage given the physical demands of soccer match-play. Since long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) enhance muscle sensitivity to protein supplementation, dietary supplementation with a combination of fish oil-derived n-3PUFA, protein, and carbohydrate may promote exercise recovery. This study examined the influence of adding n-3PUFA to a whey protein, leucine, and carbohydrate containing beverage over a six-week supplementation period on physiological markers of recovery measured over three days following eccentr

Recombinant lactobacillus expressing G protein of spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) combined with ORF81 protein of koi herpesvirus (KHV): A promising way to induce protective immunity against SVCV and KHV infection in cyprinid fish via oral vaccination.

Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) and koi herpesvirus (KHV) are highly contagious and pathogenic to cyprinid fish, causing enormous economic losses in aquaculture. Although DNA vaccines reported in recent years could induce protective immune responses in carps against these viruses via injection, there are a number of consequences and uncertainties related to DNA vaccination. Therefore, more effective and practical method to induce protective immunity such as oral administration would be highly desirable. In this study, we investigated the utilities of a genetically engineered Lactobacillus
