First record of eocene bony fishes and crocodyliforms from Canada's Western Arctic.

BACKGROUND: Discovery of Eocene non-marine vertebrates, including crocodylians, turtles, bony fishes, and mammals in Canada's High Arctic was a critical paleontological contribution of the last century because it indicated that this region of the Arctic had been mild, temperate, and ice-free during the early - middle Eocene (∼53-50 Ma), despite being well above the Arctic Circle. To date, these discoveries have been restricted to Canada's easternmost Arctic - Ellesmere and Axel Heiberg Islands (Nunavut). Although temporally correlative strata crop out over 1,000 km west, on Canada's westernmos

Characterization and dietary regulation of oligopeptide transporter (PepT1) in different ploidy fishes.

The oligopeptide transporter (PepT1) is located on the brush-border membrane of the intestinal epithelium which has been regarded as a mediator of protein absorption. Here, we cloned and characterized PepT1 genes from diploid (red crucian carp), triploid and tetraploid fish. Then, the PepT1 expression pattern in different tissues and embryogenesis were assayed. Meanwhile, using real-time PCR and western blotting, we showed the expression profiles of diets with different protein levels, protein sources and additives (sodium butyrate) in triploids. The cDNAs of the three different ploidy fishes

Evidence of antibiotic resistance in free-swimming, top-level marine predatory fishes.

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a growing problem in both human and veterinary medicine. Several studies documented the presence of resistant bacteria in humans, livestock, and domestic animals; however, limited research is available on the presence of antibiotic drug resistance in wildlife species. A cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of resistant bacteria collected from wild-caught, marine predatory fishes. Seven species of sharks and a single teleost species were opportunistically sampled from six different study sites in coastal Belize, coastal and nearshor

Corticotropin-releasing hormone-binding protein: biochemistry and function from fishes to mammals.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) plays multiple roles in vertebrate species. In mammals, it is the major hypothalamic releasing factor for pituitary adrenocorticotropin secretion, and is a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator at other sites in the central nervous system. In non-mammalian vertebrates, CRH not only acts as a neurotransmitter and hypophysiotropin, it also acts as a potent thyrotropin-releasing factor, allowing CRH to regulate both the adrenal and thyroid axes, especially in development. The recent discovery of a family of CRH-like peptides suggests that multiple CRH-like ligan

The chloride cell: structure and function in the gills of freshwater fishes.

This review focuses on the structure and function of the branchial chloride cell in freshwater fishes. The mitochondria-rich chloride cell is believed to be the principal site of trans-epithelial Ca2+ and Cl- influxes. Though currently debated, there is accruing evidence that the pavement cell is the site of Na+ uptake via channels linked electrically to an apical membrane vacuolar H(+)-ATPase (proton pump). Chloride cells perform an integral role in acid-base regulation. During conditions of alkalosis, the surface area of exposed chloride cells is increased, which serves to enhance base equiv

Ganoine formation in the scales of primitive actinopterygian fishes, lepisosteids and polypterids.

The scales of primitive living actinopterygian fishes, lepisosteids and polypterids, have retained ganoine, a hypermineralized layer which covered the scales of the osteichthyan ancestors. To know finally its tissue origin in the actinopterygian lineage, ganoine formation was described in Lepisosteus oculatus, with scales devoid of dentin, and was compared to ganoine formation in two polypterids, Calamoichthys calabaricus and Polypterus senegalus, with scales possessing a dentin layer. The events taking place before, during and after ganoine deposition were studied in experimentally regenerate

Encephalization in tropical teleost fishes and comparison with their mode of life.

The brains were dissected from a total of 1225 fishes representing 737 species, 310 genera and 113 families of tropical and subtropical teleosts. Each fish was weighed before brain dissection, and each brain weighed after its removal. The encephalization coefficient k was determined for each fish from a quadratic formula; to conveniently compare brain size of one species with that of another, we used an encephalization index so that an encephalization index of 100 is the average for all the species investigated. The encephalization indices for the families of fishes studied varied from 7 for t

Investigations on methyl mercury contamination of fishes in the Second Songhua River.

Fishes in the middle reaches of the Second Songhua River in Jilin Province were heavily contaminated by methyl mercury, the average content of 61 fish samples being 0.42 mg/kg. The upper and lower reaches were less contaminated and the averages were 0.12 mg/kg (53 samples) and 0.08 mg/kg (20 samples), respectively. The average methyl mercury content of fishes (20 samples) collected from a nearby "nonpolluted" water reservoir was 0.03 mg/kg. In a total of 134 fish samples collected from the Second Songhua River, 41% of the samples had a methyl mercury content exceeding the National Tolerance Li

Human targeting of morphologically unique fishes amplifies the risk of functional erosion.

Human societies are drawing on wild species for food, fuel, medicines, and recreation. Yet, it remains unclear whether different types of human use target species with common or unique ecological roles. Here we show that humans use a fourth (26%) of the freshwater fish species and these species occupy almost half (45.2%) of the global spectrum of fish morphological diversity. Yet, used species harbour unique trait combinations, that differ according to the way humans use the species such as fisheries, aquaculture, game fish and aquarium. Moreover, the species targeted by humans are characteris

Global length-weight relationships of deep-pelagic fishes: Coverage, biases and variability.

Length-weight relationships (LWRs) are morphometric tools that allow body mass to be estimated from fish length, providing input for fisheries, ecological and biodiversity studies. For deep-pelagic fishes, however, LWR data remain fragmented and unavailable for most species. Here, we present a global synthesis of LWRs for deep-pelagic fishes, consolidating available data into a single harmonised dataset and mapping taxonomic and geographic gaps. We provide the first LWR estimates for seven species and provide additional morphometric information, including extensions of previously reported size

Bacterial composition of the microbiome of mesopelagic fishes from the Northeast Atlantic.

BACKGROUND: The mesopelagic zone, between 100 and 1000 m depth, contains up to 90% of marine vertebrate biomass. Mesopelagic fishes are key components of these ecosystems through their feeding interactions and play a critical role in the ocean's biological carbon pump through their diel vertical migrations, yet the bacterial communities associated with these fishes remain poorly characterized. Because bioluminescence and light-related interactions are widespread ecological traits in mesopelagic ecosystems, we investigated the bacterial communities associated with the gut, liver, and skin of me

Non-migratory lineages experience higher diversification rates: global evidence from salmonid fishes.

Biologists have long sought to understand the forces driving speciation. Contrasts in dispersal ability (e.g., migration) are hypothesized to influence rates of lineage diversification. However, past inferences of migration-diversification relationships have been contradictory, suggesting the need for further investigation and more nuanced explanations. Here, we test for a relationship between diadromy (marine-freshwater migration) and diversification in salmonids, a dominant group of fishes native across the temperate Northern Hemisphere. We reconstruct a molecular phylogeny comprising 140 sp

Establishment of primary cell culture from deep-water fishes: an early insight.

Establishing primary cell cultures from the mesopelagic and deep-sea fishes is challenging, due to the adaptations of the organisms to high pressure, low temperature, and the logistical difficulties in retrieving specimens to surface. In the present study, we attempted to establish primary cell cultures from the fishes collected at a depth range from 100 to 250 m, by a single-day commercial trawler. Primary cultures were initiated through explant method, for live fishes (Sorsogona tuberculata, Platycephalus indicus, Uranoscopus marmoratus, and Halieutaea sp.) and the onboard-process of Priacan

Cichlid fishes are promising underutilized models to investigate helminth-host-microbiome interactions.

The "Old Friends Hypothesis" suggests insufficient exposure to symbionts hinders immune development, contributing to increased immune-related diseases in the Global North. The microbiome is often the focus; helminths, potentially also offering health benefits, lack attention. Infection and effect of helminths are influenced and perhaps determined by micro-organisms. Mechanisms behind parasite-microbiome interactions are poorly understood, despite implications on host health. These interactions are typically studied for single helminth species in laboratory animal models, overlooking helminth d

Anatomy of the endocrine pancreas in actinopterygian fishes and its phylogenetic implications.

The anatomy and organisation of the endocrine pancreas in ray-finned fishes vary widely. The two main morphoanatomical character states are diffuse versus compact pancreatic tissue. The latter are called Brockmann Bodies (BBs), or principal islets. The present study is the first comprehensive survey on the anatomy of the endocrine pancreas (diffuse versus compact) across 322 actinopterygian species in 39 orders and 135 families based on literature, specimen dissections, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The data obtained show that large endocrine pancreatic islets (BB) have appeared severa

Tropical cyclone impacts on seagrass-associated fishes in a temperate-subtropical estuary.

Major storms can alter coastal ecosystems in several direct and indirect ways including habitat destruction, stormwater-related water quality degradation, and organism mortality. From 2010-2020, ten tropical cyclones impacted coastal North Carolina, providing an opportunity to explore ecosystem responses across multiple storms. Using monthly trawl and contemporaneous seagrass surveys conducted in Back Sound, NC, we evaluated how cyclones may affect the nursery role of shallow-water biogenic habitats by examining seagrass-associated fish responses within a temperate-subtropical estuary. We empl

Occurrence of anisakid parasites in marine fishes and whales off New Caledonia.

Anisakid nematodes are the most infamous parasites occurring in seafood with ability to infect humans. In the present study, the infective stages of five anisakid larval types, including Anisakis types I and III, Terranova types I and II and Contracaecum larval type, as well as adult Anisakis paggiae are reported from 16 host species from New Caledonian waters. The specific identity of the larval types was investigated using ITS sequence data. Anisakis larval types I and III were identified as Anisakis typica and Anisakis brevispiculata, respectively, based on identical ITS sequences. However,
