Bulb dermatitis. Dermatological problems in the flower bulb industries.

The irritant and allergenic properties of the most important flower bulbs are described, as well as the clinical symptoms they cause. The tulip contains the allergen tulipalin A; sensitization and irritation are responsible for the development of tulip fingers. The same clinical picture can be caused by Alliums like the onion and garlic. The narcissus causes lily rash, a dermatitis rarely caused by sensitization. The hyacinth evokes itching in practically everyone: an irritant reaction caused by calcium oxalate crystals. Patch testing is complicated as the allergens are not all identified.

Health effects of pesticides in the flower-bulb culture in Holland.

In a comprehensive project the health risk for workers using pesticides in the flower-bulb culture was addressed in several studies regarding biological monitoring, occupational hygiene and health effects. With respect to biological monitoring, methods were developed for the analysis of metabolites in urine of captan, pirimicarb, zineb and maneb and the soil fumigant dichloropropene. For dichloropropene in a field study a clear relationship was found between the external personal exposure and the excretion of two metabolites (mercapturic acids) in urine. The application technique distinctly in

Mutagenesis of kiwifruit CENTRORADIALIS-like genes transforms a climbing woody perennial with long juvenility and axillary flowering into a compact plant with rapid terminal flowering.

Annualization of woody perennials has the potential to revolutionize the breeding and production of fruit crops and rapidly improve horticultural species. Kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) is a recently domesticated fruit crop with a short history of breeding and tremendous potential for improvement. Previously, multiple kiwifruit CENTRORADIALIS (CEN)-like genes have been identified as potential repressors of flowering. In this study, CRISPR/Cas9- mediated manipulation enabled functional analysis of kiwifruit CEN-like genes AcCEN4 and AcCEN. Mutation of these genes transformed a climbing woody p

Reproductive thermotolerance: from flower development to seed initiation.

Global warming has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events, threatening crop productivity and food security. Plant reproductive development is particularly vulnerable to high temperature, and even brief heat episodes can markedly reduce seed set. Heat stress disrupts multiple reproductive stages, including flowering, male and female gametophyte development, pollination, fertilization, and early seed development. Thus, reproductive thermotolerance requires coordinated regulation across developmental stages and tissue systems. In this review, we synthesize current knowledge

Bioactivities and Phytochemical Potential of Vatica Diospyroides Flower Extracts.

This study investigated the phytochemical composition and bioactivities of Vatica diospyroides flower extracts to evaluate their potential for natural product and cosmetic applications. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of alkaloids, phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenoids, with ethanol extracts exhibiting the highest abundance of bioactive constituents. In all extracts, total phenolic content was higher than total flavonoid content. The ethanol bud extract showed strong antioxidant activity, with an IC₅₀ value of 0.00050 ± 0.00003 µg/mL in the DPPH assay. Anti-inflammatory activity

Case Series: Malignant Flower Cells in Peripheral Blood.

The presence of lymphoid cells with flower-like nuclei in peripheral blood is an uncommon morphologic finding, classically associated with Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection related Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATLL). However, similar cytologic features may be observed in other hematolymphoid malignancies. To describe cases of hematologic neoplasms presenting with flower cells in the peripheral blood and to highlight their broader diagnostic spectrum. We report a series of patients with distinct hematologic malignancies who demonstrated flower cells on peripheral blood sme

Spatial and Temporal Regulation of Flower Coloration in Cymbidium lowianum.

Flower color is a crucial trait that attracts pollinators and determines the ornamental value of floral crops. Cymbidium lowianum, one of the most important breeding parent of Cymbidium hybrids, has two flower morphs (normal and albino) that differ in flower lip color. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying flower color formation in C. lowianum are not well understood. In this study, comparative metabolomic analysis between normal and albino flower lip tissues indicated that cyanidin-3-O-glucoside content was significantly higher in red epichiles than in other lip tissues. This finding s

Pollinator attraction of the wasp-flower Scrophularia umbrosa (Scrophulariaceae).

Certain species of Scrophularia (Scrophulariaceae), such as S. nodosa and S. umbrosa, are mainly pollinated by social wasps and are consequently described as wasp-flowers. Because plants attract their pollinators with the help of various floral cues, such as floral odour and/or optical cues, we have investigated the role of olfactory and visual floral signals responsible for wasp attraction in S. umbrosa. Using a combination of chemical (GC, GC-MS) and electrophysiological analyses (GC-EAD), we identified ten compounds in the complex floral odour bouquet that are detectable by the wasps' anten…

A thermosensory pathway controlling flowering time in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Onset of flowering is controlled by environmental signals such as light and temperature. Molecular-genetic studies in Arabidopsis thaliana have focused on daily light duration, or photoperiod, and transient exposure to winter-like temperatures, or vernalization. Yet ambient growth temperature, which is strongly affected by current changes in global climate, has been largely ignored. Here, we show that genes of the autonomous pathway, previously thought only to act independently of the environment as regulators of the floral repressor FLC (ref. 1), are centrally involved in mediating the effect

[Mortality of cattle following feeding of moldy flower bulbs].

Five of eight meat cattle died suddenly without showing prior symptoms of disease. The sudden death occurred in connection with the feeding of mouldy tulip bulbs. A short review is given of the use of flower bulbs as cattle feed, the use of herbicides/fungicides in bulb cultivation, and the relevant legislation. Several toxicological aspects that should be taken into consideration when flower bulbs are used as cattle feed are discussed. Both the Central Veterinary Institute and the State Institute for Public Health and Environmental Hygiene showed, in experiments with mice, the presence of a t

Digital Monitoring and Modeling of Honey Bee Foraging on Clover Flowers Under Heat Stress.

Plant-pollinator networks are increasingly threatened by rising global temperatures, yet monitoring these interactions at scale remains challenging. This study presents a digital monitoring framework that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to analyze honey bee ( Apis mellifera ) foraging on white clover ( Trifolium repens ) under normal and heat-stress conditions. The main objective was to establish a proof-of-concept for real-time, AI-driven pollinator monitoring rather than to draw definitive conclusions about the effects of heat stress on honey bee foraging beh

Floral symmetry is associated with contrasting hydraulic strategies and trait coordination in angiosperm flowers.

Floral symmetry is widely recognized as a key driver of angiosperm diversification, yet how actinomorphic and zygomorphic flowers differ in their hydraulic architecture remains poorly understood. Clarifying symmetry-related differences in hydraulic strategies is essential for linking floral function with physiological and evolutionary divergence. Here, we measured 22 floral traits related to hydraulics, structural and reproductive investment across 39 woody species (21 actinomorphic and 18 zygomorphic) to evaluate how floral symmetry shapes hydraulic design. Our results revealed distinct hydra…

Adaptive response of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa ssp. indica) flowers to low sunlight intensity.

Records of sunlight intensity at anthesis of 388 rice landraces (with 32 replicated populations), flowering in the short-day season of 2022, reveal that under cloudy condition, the rice florets tend to open later, or the sunrise-to-anthesis duration (SAD) is longer when rice florets open than at sunny period. This difference in the length of SAD was statistically highly significant (p < 0.0001), confirmed by a two-sample permutation test with 10,000 iterations. This finding corroborates our general observation previously reported from a larger set of 1114 landraces (including the 388 landraces

Integrated analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics of Dendrobium officinale flowers at different developmental stages.

Dendrobium officinale is an edible medicinal herb. Its flowers contain various nutrients and active compounds, the abundance of which differs significantly across developmental stages. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these variations remain poorly understood. This study employed combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses to investigate changes in gene expression and metabolite concentrations in Dendrobium flowers and buds. The analysis identified 2767 differentially expressed genes between the bud (group B) and flower (group F) stages, with 902 up-regulated and 1865 down-reg…

Do Nectar Guides in Flowers of Two Myosotis L. Species (Boraginaceae) Serve as Osmophores?

Osmophores, which constitute scent-releasing glands in flowers, have so far been insufficiently characterised. This study is the first to present the structure of scent glands exhibiting features consistent with those of osmophores in two Myosotis species (Boraginaceae). Petal tissues of Myosotis scorpioides and M. sylvatica were analysed using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Histochemical tests were performed to detect fragrance-producing tissues (neutral red), phenols (Toluidine blue O), lipids (Sudan III, Sudan Red B), and starch (Lugol …
