In epidermolysis bullosa (EB), chronic constipation, painful defecation, and fecal impaction frequently contribute to malnutrition and growth failure. Standard treatments for constipation, such as increased intake of conventional dietary fiber and fluids and/or the use of laxatives and stool softeners, are largely unsuccessful. Iron-fortified infant formula is effective in preventing iron deficiency at levels of iron that are compatible with an upper limit of 3 mg/100 kcal. However, lower levels of fortification may prove to be adequate. There are theoretical concerns about the effects of high levels of dietary iron on the absorption of other trace minerals and on resistance to infection. These considerations make it desirable to determine whether lower levels of iron fortification in infant formula will be equally effective in preventing iron deficiency in infants.

Patients with moderate to severe alcoholic hepatitis and features of protein-calorie malnutrition were studied with respect to changes in their nutritional status during 30 days of hospitalization. Thirty-four patients served as controls, were given a 2500 kcal hospital diet and allowed to eat ad libitum. CONTEXT: Hyperinsulinism is characterized by dysregulated insulin secretion and is typically associated with reduced fasting tolerance. Long-term hyperinsulinism management includes nutrition and medication to normalize plasma glucose levels. Management of enteral feeds and oral intake is integral to the clinical management strategy in children with hyperinsulinism. Feeding dysfunction (FD) has recently been considered to comprise a prevalent set of symptoms in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) in young children.
