Support from a Best Friend Makes People Eat Less under Stress: Evidence from Two Experiments.

When experiencing acute stress, individuals often turn to eating for comfort, as it provides a sense of satiety and satisfaction that can temporarily alleviate the stressful condition. However, this may increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease. In this study, we conducted two behavioral experiments to investigate the effectiveness of social support in reducing stress-induced overeating and the mediative role of negative affect and self-efficacy (Experiment 1), as well as the role of reward sensitivity (Experiment 2). Acute stress was induced using a speech preparation tas

Exploratory behaviour shapes nutrient versus energy foraging priorities in Java sparrows.

Understanding the link between bird personality and food preference would help elucidate individual foraging strategies and species adaptabi … ignificantly associated with food preference. In particular, fast-exploring Java sparrows exhibited food preferences that were associated with both the nutrient and energy contents of foods, and that such preferences were stage-dependent in the feeding duration. Our findings provide valuable insights into the relationship between personality and food preferences.

Dietary zinc status reversibly alters both the feeding behaviors of the rats and gene expression patterns in diencephalon.

Nutritional status influences feeding behaviors, food preferences, and taste sensations. For example, zinc-deficient rats have been reported to show reduced and cyclic food intake patterns with increased preferences for NaCl. Although some impairments of the central nervous and endocrine systems have been speculated to be involved in these phenomena, the effects of short-term zinc deficiency on the brain have not been well examined to date. In this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the gene expression patterns in the rat diencephalon, which is a portion of the brain that includes…

Avoidance diets--how selective should we be?

Selective avoidance diets are the most common means of treatment for food allergies and other types of food sensitivities. With IgE-mediated food allergies, adverse reactions can occur in some patients to very small amounts of the offending food; therefore, strict avoidance of the offending food must be accomplished. With other, non-immunological types of food sensitivities, such as lactose intolerance and sulfite sensitivity, the patients are able to tolerate some, although variable, amounts of the offending substance. Thus, the degree of tolerance is an important concern in the construction

Eating habits and behaviors in children with Dravet syndrome: A case-control study.

This study evaluated food preferences and eating behaviors of individuals with Dravet syndrome. Patients diagnosed with Dravet syndrome were recruited, as well as a control group composed of siblings of patients with epilepsy (any form). The Food Preference Questionnaire and the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire were completed by caregivers along with two open-ended questions regarding eating challenges. Seventy-eight participants (45 with Dravet syndrome and 33 controls) were included. Compared to controls, mean scores for food preference were lower for fruits (p = .000099), meats and fish …

Correlation Between the TAS2R38 Genetic Polymorphism, PROP Perception and Eating Habits: A Cross-Sectional Molecular Epidemiological Study.

Background/Objectives: Genetic variation in bitter taste receptors, particularly TAS2R38, influences sensitivity to bitter compounds such as 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP). However, its influence on food preferences and dietary habits remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between TAS2R38 rs713598 polymorphism, a variant in strong linkage disequilibrium with other common variants and therefore served as a proxy for TAS2R38 bitter taste-related genetic variation, PROP responsiveness, food preferences, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Methods: A cross-sectional molecular …

A single brain stem substrate mediates the motivational effects of both opiates and food in nondeprived rats but not in deprived rats.

Drug-naive and morphine-dependent rats both preferred places paired with morphine over unfamiliar neutral places. Morphine-dependent, but not naive, rats avoided places paired with the lack of morphine (i.e., withdrawal). Food-sated and food-deprived rats both preferred places paired with food over unfamiliar neutral places. Food-deprived, but not sated, rats avoided places paired with the lack of food (i.e., hunger). Lesions of the tegmental pedunculopontine nucleus (TPP) blocked the morphine- and food-conditioned place preferences in drug-naive and food-sated rats, respectively. TPP lesions

An Evaluation of a Telehealth Caregiver Training Package to Treat Food Selectivity.

Telehealth behavioral interventions are increasingly necessary when in-person services are not accessible (e.g., due to geographic location, time, cost, and health and safety restrictions). There is a growing evidence-base for the effectiveness of telehealth interventions but few demonstrations of telehealth interventions for pediatric feeding disorders. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a telehealth caregiver training package to teach caregivers to implement a feeding intervention, in their home as primary interventionists, to treat their children's food selectivity. To address some p

Front-of-pack (FOP) labelling systems to improve the quality of nutrition information to prevent obesity: NutrInform Battery vs Nutri-Score.

Many systems for classifying food products to adequately predict lower all-cause morbidity and mortality have been proposed as front-of-pack (FOP) nutritional labels. Although the efforts and advances that these systems represent for public health must be appreciated, as scientists involved in nutrition research and belonging to diverse Italian nutrition scientific societies, we would like to draw stakeholders' attention to the fact that some FOP labels risk being not correctly informative to consumers' awareness of nutritional food quality. The European Commission has explicitly called for su

Development and application of specific questions to classify a child as food texture sensitive.

Understanding food texture sensitivity in children is important in guiding food selection. The objective of this work was to develop a short questionnaire that could be completed by parents in nonclinical settings to provide a categorization for food texture sensitivity in children. This study evaluated the distribution of children as texture sensitive (TS) or non-texture sensitive (NTS) and the predictive validity of these questions to explain rejection of specific food textures. Three sets of survey data were examined, including data from a home-use test (HUT) in children with and without Do

Drivers of consumer food choices of multinational corporations' products over local foods in Ghana: a maximum difference scaling study.

INTRODUCTION: The fundamental transformation of food systems and retail environments in low-income countries is influencing consumers' food choices and dietary habits in unfavourable directions through the consumption of highly processed, energy-dense foods, predominantly manufactured by multinational food corporations. This study aims to identify the principal factors driving consumers' preference for multinational foods over local foods in the urban Accra region of Ghana. METHOD: This cross-sectional survey involving a random sample of 200 consumers conducted in March/April 2023 using inter

The impact of the nutri-score on food choice: A choice experiment in a Dutch supermarket.

Front-of-package (FOP) nutrition labels are placed on products to help consumers make healthy food choices. A lab-in-field experiment was conducted to test the effectiveness of two FOP labels in promoting healthy food choices among Dutch consumers, and to examine whether dieters and health conscious shoppers are more likely to use the FOP labels. In addition, it was examined whether the placement of relatively "good" FOP label scores on products might inadvertently lead to increases in serving sizes. Participants (N = 300) consisted of Dutch consumers shopping for groceries in a local supermar

Real-time recording: A scoping review of methods to study children's real-time exposure to food and food marketing online.

Today, children are exposed to an unprecedented amount of marketing for high-fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) foods and non-alcoholic beverages. Exposure to HFSS products influences children's food preferences and consumption patterns. As children increasingly live, learn and play online, understanding their exposure to food and food marketing in digital environments has become a growing area of research. Real-time recording of children's devices offers an observational method of assessing their exposure to food and food marketing online. This scoping review aimed to identify and analyse studies emp…

Nudging food choice in a prison setting: an investigation using food choice data.

BACKGROUND: The prison population presents complex health needs and is disproportionately affected by poor health, compared to the general population. Diet has a clear role in prisoner health, and the prison food environment within which food choices are made is relatively under-researched. The aim of this study was to examine whether food choices in a women's prison changed after the introduction of a new menu design by the catering team. METHODS: The adjusted menu design incorporated an emoticon (a smiley face) placed next to designated 'Healthy Choice' foods on the menu sheets, which were

Boxwood Borer Heterobostrychus brunneus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Infesting Dried Cassava: A Current Record from Southern Ethiopia.

Insect specimens of adult beetles and larvae of 7-9 and 9-10 mm length, respectively were collected from infested dry cassava at two locations from multiple stores in southern Ethiopia. The specimens were identified as Heterobostrychus brunneus (Murray, 1867) commonly known as boxwood borer and auger beetle. The study presents a current record of H. brunneus in Ethiopia, particularly in the context of infesting food products. Additionally, a wide geographical distribution of the pest was reviewed and presented in this article. Current evidence suggests that H. brunneus is a serious pest of for

Same, same but different: Attention bias for food cues in adults and adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Attention processing for food may be biased in people with Anorexia Nervosa (AN). However, previous studies have had inconsistent results. This is likely to be due to indirect assessment of attention, which does not inform on the underlying attention processes, and/or the heterogeneity of participants across studies, testing either adults or adolescents with AN, that is, people at very different developmental and illness stages. METHOD: Eye-tracking was employed as a direct assessment of attention during a visual probe task with food versus non-food pictures. Attention bias for foo
