We encountered a case of distinctive palmar-plantar erythema with desquamation of the fingers in a patient receiving high-dose mercaptopurine combined with allopurinol. He was receiving 400 mg/d of mercaptopurine with 200 mg/d of allopurinol when a painful, livid erythema involving his hands and feet developed. Over the ensuing 24 hours, desquamation of the distal fingertips was noted. The mercaptopurine was discontinued and the patient was treated with topical fluocinonide ointment under occlusion. Over the next 96 hours, the erythema and pain resolved entirely. To date, this is the eighth ca

BACKGROUND: Volar melanotic macules are asymptomatic light-brown or tannish-grey macules usually found on the palms and/or soles of blacks, although they have also been reported on the volar surfaces of whites. Similar lesions have not been reported before in Japanese people. Since the cause is as yet unknown, it remains to be discussed whether they are a distinct entity.
METHODS: In this report, a 52-year-old Japanese man with volar melanotic macules is reported with the clinical and histopathological findings.
RESULTS: A 52-year-old Japanese man presented with many light-brown macules on h

A forty-year-old woman suffering from maduromycosis of the right sole is described with a disease history of 17 years. After a contusion and surgery for fibroma she developed an edema on the skin of the right sole, then ulcers with purulent discharge. She was repeatedly treated on an outpatient basis and in hospital by surgeons, phthisiologist, and dermatologist for osteomyelitis, tuberculosis of the bones, and Kaposi's sarcoma without effect. The diagnosis of maduromycosis of the sole was confirmed by laboratory examinations and histologically by detecting Actinomyces elements. Since conserva

Milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis (MICC) is a very rare dermatological disorder characterized by multiple whitish to skin colored, milia-like papules, mostly found on the hands. MICC can disappear spontaneously by adulthood; therefore, its early recognition is crucial to avoiding unnecessary interventions. Herein, we present a case of MICC in a 6-year-old girl with Down syndrome.

A case of concomitant granuloma annulare (GA) and necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is presented. The etiology of these two disorders remains obscure. The similarity of the histopathology in GA and NL might suggest a common origin. However, a review of the 5 previous cases of concomitant GA and NL and recent biochemical, immunological and immunohistochemical studies comparing GA to NL indicates an independent etiology for these two histologically related disorders. Some evidence points toward a closer relationship of NL with diabetes than GA, while GA may be related to delayed-type hypersensitivity r

We studied a white skin type 3 male patient aged 68 years old with a paraneoplastic acrokeratosis of Bazex, suffering from an oesophagus neoplasm. Cutaneous manifestations preceded in months the cancer. Dermatosis affected fingers of hands and feet, soles, nose and helix. Black melanic hyperpigmentation was the first cutaneous sign and were followed by an hyperkeratosis, becoming the most clinical characteristic of the syndrome. The sequence of these signs induces us to suggest that hormonal factors elaborated by the tumoral cells are the ones responsible for the pigmentary changes since they

Dermatoses of the hands and feet cover a wide range of skin diseases that can occur in children and adolescents and are a frequent question in dermatological practice. Our synopsis of the most important differential diagnoses and their treatment is intended to provide better orientation for daily practice. A precise and detailed history is essential to establish a diagnosis, followed by clinical examination and specific examination methods. Cutaneous infection should always be excluded, as they occur very frequently. Impetigo, punctate keratolysis, blistering distal dactylitis, tinea manuum an

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Paraneoplastic dermatoses are skin disorders that are associated with malignancy. Anaplastic large T-cell lymphoma (ALTCL) has rarely been associated with paraneoplastic skin manifestations such as gangrenous foot ulcers and erythroderma.
METHODS: We describe a case of ALTCL presenting as a large annular skin rash. The clinical picture, course, and treatment will be discussed along with current hypotheses on the mechanism of paraneoplastic syndromes.
RESULTS: Skin manifestations in ALTCL most commonly arise in two distinct ways; either as primary cutaneous lymphoma manifesta
