Upper extremity sensorimotor control among collegiate football players.

Injuries stemming from shoulder instability are very common among athletes participating in contact sports, such as football. Previous research has shown that increased laxity negatively affects the function of the sensorimotor system potentially leading to a pathological cycle of shoulder dysfunction. Currently, there are no data detailing such effects among football players. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the differences in upper extremity sensorimotor control among football players compared with that of a control group. Forty-five collegiate football players and 70 male…

Patellar tendon ruptures in National Football League players.

BACKGROUND: Although knee injuries are common among professional football players, ruptures of the patellar tendon are relatively rare. Predisposing factors, mechanisms of injury, treatment guidelines, and recovery expectations are not well established in high-level athletes. HYPOTHESIS: Professional football players with isolated rupture of the patellar tendon treated with timely surgical repair will return to their sport. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: Twenty-four ruptures of the patellar tendon in 22 National Football League (NFL) players were identified from 1…

Injuries among male and female elite football players.

All 12 female football clubs (228 players) and 11 of 14 male clubs (239 players) in the Swedish premier league were followed prospectively during the 2005 season. Individual exposure (playing time), injuries (time loss), and injury severity (days lost due to injury) were recorded by the team medical staffs. Injury incidence was higher for male players during both training (4.7 vs 3.8 injuries/1000 h, P=0.018) and match play (28.1 vs 16.1, P<0.001). However, no difference was found in the incidence of severe injury (absence >4 weeks) (0.7/1000 h in both groups). The thigh, especially the hamstr…

Quantifying the functional rehabilitation of injured football players.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether quantified, auditable records of functional rehabilitation can be generated using subjective assessments of players' performance in fitness tests routinely used in professional football. METHOD: Ten sequential test elements grouped into three phases (fitness, ball and match skills, match pace football) were used to monitor players' functional recovery from injury. Physiotherapists subjectively assessed players' performance in each test element using a six point subjective rating scale. Satisfactory performance in each element of the assessment programme added 1…

Helmet hazards. Do's & don'ts of football helmet removal.

EMS providers must use extreme caution when evaluating and treating an unconscious football player, especially when the extent of the injury remains unknown. Suspect any unconscious football player has an accompanying spinal injury until proven otherwise. If the football player isn't breathing or the possibility of respiratory arrest exists, it's essential that certified athletic trainers and EMS providers work quickly and effectively to remove the face mask and administer care. In most situations, the helmet doesn't need to be removed in the field. Proper management of head and neck injuries …

Acute elbow injuries in the National Football League.

We performed a retrospective review to evaluate acute medial collateral ligament injuries of the elbow in professional football players from 1991 to 1996 (5 seasons). There were 5 acute medial collateral ligament injuries in 4 players (1 player with bilateral involvement). All injuries occurred with the hand planted on the playing surface while a valgus or hyperextension force was applied to the elbow. There were 2 centers, both involved with long-snapping situations, 1 running back, and 1 quarterback. All elbows had valgus instability on physical examination. Despite this instability, all pla…

Transmission of Norwalk virus during a football game.

BACKGROUND: During a college football game in Florida, diarrhea and vomiting developed in many of the members of a North Carolina team. The next day, similar symptoms developed in some of the players on the opposing team. METHODS: We interviewed those who ate the five meals served to the North Carolina team before the game and some of the players on the opposing team who became ill. Patients with primary cases were members or staff of the team who had vomiting or diarrhea at least 10 hours after but no more than 50 hours after eating a box lunch served the day before the game. Patients with s…

Prevalence of acne keloidalis nuchae in football players.

BACKGROUND: Acne mechanica (AM) is common in football players. Severe cases of nuchal AM may precede acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN). Factors that may be associated with the progression of nuchal AM to AKN are unknown. The prevalence of AKN in football players has not been reported. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the frequency of nuchal AM and AKN within a susceptible population and attempted to identify factors that may be associated with AKN. METHODS: Four hundred fifty-three high school, collegiate, and professional football players were examined for the presence of nuchal AM or AKN. Those with …

Significance of lumbar spondylolysis in college football players.

We reviewed the records of 506 consecutive college football players over an eight-year period. Of these athletes, 135 (27%) had low-back pain. Because of persistent low-back symptoms, 58 players had roentgenograms of the lumbosacral spine; 12 cases of lumbar spondylosis were observed. From the 58 players for whom roentgenograms were available, two groups were compared with respect to time lost from games and practices. One group (N = 8) had low-back pain complaints with lumbar spondylosis. The randomly selected control group (N = 12) had low-back pain with no evidence of spondylolysis on roent…

Serum microRNAs associated with concussion in football players.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mild TBI)/concussion is a common sports injury, especially common in football players. Repeated concussions are thought to lead to long-term brain damage including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). With the worldwide growing interest in studying sport-related concussion the search for biomarkers for early diagnosis and progression of neuronal injury has also became priority. MicroRNAs are short, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. Due to their high stability in biological fluids, microRNAs can serve as biomarkers in a variety…

American Football Play and Parkinson Disease Among Men.

IMPORTANCE: Parkinsonism and Parkinson disease (PD) are known to result from repetitive head impacts from boxing. Repetitive head impacts from American football may also be associated with increased risk of neurodegenerative pathologies that cause parkinsonism, yet in vivo research on the association between football play and PD is scarce and limited by small samples and equivocal findings. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between football participation and self-reported parkinsonism or PD diagnosis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study leveraged data from the …
