Effects of the Diamine Chain End Functionalized Liquid Butadiene Rubber as a Processing Aid on the Properties of Carbon-Black-Filled Rubber Compounds.

The implementation of vehicle electrification and autonomous driving technologies has recently emphasized the importance of abrasion resistance and fuel efficiency of truck bus radial (TBR) tire treads that undergo high loads and long driving times. In this study, a functionalized liquid butadiene rubber (F-LqBR) was introduced to replace the treated distillate aromatic extracted (TDAE) oil as a way to improve abrasion resistance and fuel efficiency in the TBR tire tread compound and to solve the oil migration. First, radical polymerization was used to synthesize nonfunctionalized LqBR (N-LqBR

Emission reduction of NOx, PM, PM-carbon, and PAHs from a generator fuelled by biodieselhols.

This investigation examines the particulate matter (PM), particulate carbon, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from a generator fueled by petroleum diesel blended with waste-edible-oil-biodiesel and water-containing acetone. Experimental results show that using biodieselhols with water-containing (or pure) acetone as the fuel of generator, in comparison to using petroleum diesel, significantly reduces PM emission; roughly, this reduction increased as percentage of water-containing acetone increased. When the percentages of waste-edible-oil-biodiesel wer

Production, performance and emission of biodiesel from a mixture of castor oil and neem oil.

The elimination of reserves of petroleum and their consequential environmental impact prompts the development of alternative fuels. This study aimed to blend castor and neem oils (at an 80 : 20 ratio) to address the drawbacks present in castor oil biodiesel, such as elevated kinematic viscosity and density. We propose that this new blending with a highly effective heterogeneous calcium oxide catalyst is the novelty of this work. This study employed a response surface approach to optimize biodiesel production. Biodiesel blends (B10, B20, and B30) were examined via standards EN 14214 and ASTM D6

Impact of isopropanol butanol ethanol biodiesel diesel blends on combustion and emissions in a diesel engine with DOC SCR aftertreatment.

Diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems are widely used effective aftertreatment technologies for reducing exhaust emissions from diesel engines. Isopropanol–Butanol–Ethanol (IBE) blends and safflower oil biodiesel are among the alternative fuels that support combustion and offer emission-reduction potential due to their high oxygen content and renewable properties. In this study, the effects of IBE, safflower oil biodiesel, and diesel fuel blends on engine performance, combustion characteristics, and exhaust emissions were experimentally investigated u

Polyethylene terephthalate conversion into liquid fuel by its co-pyrolysis with low- and high-density polyethylene employing scrape aluminium as catalyst.

The co-pyrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) was carried out in a batch steel pyrolyzer in order to convert the PET into pyrolysis oil as its pyrolysis alone resulted in wax and gases. The study also aimed to increase the aromatic content of pyrolysis oil by the interaction of degradation fragments of linear chains of LDPE and HDPE with the benzene ring of PET during the pyrolysis. The reaction conditions were optimized for a higher yield of pyrolysis oil which were found to be 500 °C pyrolysis temperature with a

Chemical characterization of exhaust emissions from selected canadian marine vessels: the case of trace metals and lanthanoids.

This paper reports the chemical composition of exhaust emissions from the main engines of five ocean going cargo vessels, as they traveled in Canadian waters. The emission factors (EFs) of PM2.5 and SO2 for vessels tested on various intermediate fuel oils (IFO), ranged from 0.4 to 2.2 g kW(-1) hr(-1) and 4.7 to 10.3 g kW(-1) hr(-1), respectively, and were mainly dependent on the content of sulfur in the fuel. Average NOx, CO, and CO2 EFs for these tests were 12.7, 0.45, and 618 g kW(-1) hr(-1), respectively and were generally below benchmark values commonly used by regulatory agencies. The com…

Pyrolysis of polystyrene waste for recovery of combustible hydrocarbons using copper oxide as catalyst.

The present work is focused on pyrolysis of polystyrene waste for production of combustible hydrocarbons. The experiments were performed in an indigenously made furnace in the presence of a laboratory synthesised copper oxide. The pyrolysis products were collected and characterised. The Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that the liquid fraction contains C-H, C-O, C-C, C=C and O-H bonds, which correspond to various aliphatic and aromatic compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry traced compounds ranging from C1 to C4 in the gaseous fraction, whereas in the liquid fraction 15 compo

Molecular composition of water soluble fraction of petroleum products and crude oils: Insights into groundwater contamination potential and environmental forensics.

Petroleum leakage is a major groundwater contamination source, with chemical composition of water soluble fractions (WSFs) from diverse oil sources significantly impacting groundwater quality and source identification. The aim of this study was to assess impact of 15 diverse oils on groundwater quality and environmental forensics based on oil-water equilibrium experiments. Our results indicate that contamination of groundwater by gasoline and naphtha is primarily attributed to volatile hydrocarbons, while pollution from diesel, kerosene, and crude oil is predominantly from non-hydrocarbons. Tracing fossil-based plastics, chemicals and fertilizers production in China.

Phasing down fossil fuels is crucial for climate mitigation. Even though 80-90% of fossil fuels are used to provide energy, their use as feedstock to produce plastics, fertilizers, and chemicals, is associated with substantial CO2 emissions. However, our understanding of hard-to-abate chemical production remains limited. Here we developed a chemical process-based material flow model to investigate the non-energy use of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions in China. Results show in 2017, the chemical industry used 0.18 Gt of coal, 88.8 Mt of crude oil, and 12.9 Mt of natural gas as feedstock, constit

Potential hazards associated with combustion of bio-derived versus petroleum-derived diesel fuel.

Fuels from renewable resources have gained worldwide interest due to limited fossil oil sources and the possible reduction of atmospheric greenhouse gas. One of these fuels is so called biodiesel produced from vegetable oil by transesterification into fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). To get a first insight into changes of health hazards from diesel engine emissions (DEE) by use of biodiesel scientific studies were reviewed which compared the combustion of FAME with common diesel fuel (DF) for legally regulated and non-regulated emissions as well as for toxic effects. A total number of 62 publi

Biological and health effects of exposure to kerosene-based jet fuels and performance additives.

Over 2 million military and civilian personnel per year (over 1 million in the United States) are occupationally exposed, respectively, to jet propulsion fuel-8 (JP-8), JP-8 +100 or JP-5, or to the civil aviation equivalents Jet A or Jet A-1. Approximately 60 billion gallon of these kerosene-based jet fuels are annually consumed worldwide (26 billion gallon in the United States), including over 5 billion gallon of JP-8 by the militaries of the United States and other NATO countries. JP-8, for example, represents the largest single chemical exposure in the U.S. military (2.53 billion gallon in

Thermal and chemical exhaust gas recirculation potential of punnai oil biodiesel-fuelled diesel engine for environmental sustainability.

Major energy production all over the world depends on fossil fuels. Recent research on alternative energy sources has raised major concerns about environmental impacts, future availability, and cost. Pollution from diesel engines also affects the environment negatively. As a result, there is a worldwide concern about reducing the pollutants emitted by diesel engines. In comparison to diesel fuel, biodiesel combustion produces reduced carbon monoxide (CO2) and unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions but higher nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The current study aims to investigate the thermal and ch
