Evaluation of root morphology of maxillary and mandibular second molars lost due to periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the anatomical characteristics of root morphology in molars lost due to periodontal reason. The aim of this study was to study root morphology in maxillary and mandibular molars lost due to periodontitis by investigating the frequency of root fusion, classifying fusion types, and measuring radicular groove depth by micro-computed tomography. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety-eight posterior teeth were collected from 87 Japanese patients during the study period. Of these, maxillary (N = 36) and mandibular (N = 22) second molars lost most frequently we

Dental abnormalities and bone lesions associated with familial adenomatous polyposis: report of cases.

Dental abnormalities and bone lesions of the maxilla and mandible are found in more than 70% of patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Dental abnormalities include impacted teeth (other than third molars), supernumerary teeth, congenitally missing teeth, and fused roots of molars. Bone lesions consist of osteomas--isolated or in clusters--in the maxilla and mandible. In this study of 24 patients, 75% had demonstrable dental abnormalities, and 79% had osteomas of the maxilla and mandible. Because dental abnormalities and bone lesions are present early in life, these features may be

Meningococcal septicemia and disseminated intravascular coagulation affecting the premaxillary permanent tooth germs.

The following case describes the dental effects resulting from a case of meningococcal septicemia which caused a disseminated intravascular coagulation and premaxillary osteomyelitis at age two years. The effects went unnoticed for eight years when delayed development of the maxillary incisors was noted. Treatment involved surgical removal of the dental remnants and provision of a removable partial denture. Implants and ridge augmentation will be considered in early adulthood.

Symphyseal morphology and jaw muscle recruitment levels during mastication in musteloid carnivorans.

In studies of mammalian mastication, a possible relationship has been proposed between bilateral recruitment of jaw adductor muscle force during unilateral chewing and the degree of fusion of the mandibular symphysis. Specifically, species that have unfused, mobile mandibular symphyses tend to utilize lower levels of jaw adductor force on the balancing (nonchewing) than the working (chewing) side of the head, when compared to related species with fused symphyses. Here, we compare jaw adductor recruitment levels in two species of musteloid carnivoran: the carnivorous ferret (unfused symphysis),

Fusion of central incisors with supernumerary teeth: a 10-year follow-up of multidisciplinary treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Macrodontia of anterior teeth may occur as an isolated condition or as a result of fusion or gemination and may cause clinical problems such as tooth crowding and esthetic problems. Preliminary planning and careful management are often required by a dental team comprising an orthodontist, an endodontist, a prosthodontist, and an oral surgeon. A multidisciplinary treatment approach in a case with fused teeth is presented. METHODS: A 9-year-old girl presented with macrodontia of a left maxillary central incisor. The patient was referred to the orthodontic department because of a l…

Concrescence: assessment of case by periapical radiography, cone beam computed tomography and micro-computed tomography.

The aim of this article was to describe imaging aspects of concrescence analyzed by three imaging modalities. A second molar joined together with a third molar was imaged using digital periapical radiography, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT). On periapical radiograph, the mesial root of the third molar is superimposed on the distal root of the second molar. On CBCT images, a large cementum union between bulbous roots was detected, confirming the diagnosis of concrescence. On micro-CT images, the cementum union appeared limited to the apical third of

Longitudinal Evaluation of Permanent Dental Anomalies in a Group of Yorkshire Terriers Referred for Dental Consultation.

Oral and dental diseases are among the most common problems observed in small-breed dogs. The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the breeds that most often exhibits oral disease at an early stage, namely, periodontal disease as well as persistent deciduous teeth. The present study aims to describe and analyze primary dental-skeletal anomalies in Yorkshire Terrier dogs aged <2 years, observed in referral dentistry practices, between 2015 and 2024. Dogs with full-mouth dental radiographs and charting were included. Dental agenesis, malocclusions and crowding, persistent deciduous teeth, and shape anoma

Prosthodontic Rehabilitation for a Patient with Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome: A Case Report.

Patients suffering from Ellis-Van-Creveld syndrome are a challenge for dental management. Aesthetics are a major concern with limited manual dexterity, making choice of treatment critical. A 38 year old female diagnosed with Ellis-Van-Creveld syndrome presented with stained teeth and un-aesthetic smile and related that to her low self-esteem and depression. Intra-oral examination revealed mal-aligned megadont central incisors in the maxillary arch, fused mandibular canines with laterals and missing central incisors with space discrepancy and pronounced reverse over jet and overbite. Treatment

Anatomical variations in the dentition of the domestic cat.

Skulls (n = 155) of adult domestic cats were examined macroscopically and anatomical variations were documented. The maxillary second premolar tooth was absent in 7.9% of cases, and was found to have a single root in 27.7%, partly fused roots in 55.1% and two fully formed roots in 9.2% of cases. The maxillary first molar tooth was absent in 2.3% of cases; a single root was present in 35.0%, a partly fused root in 34.7%, and two roots in 28.0% of cases. Supernumerary roots were found on the maxillary third premolar teeth in 10.3% of cases. Other variations were found to be extremely rare.

Interdisciplinary management of dental anomalies: fusion and supernumerary teeth.

A 16-year-old boy presented with a fused permanent maxillary left central incisor with a supplemental tooth and an additional supplemental tooth lingual to the permanent maxillary right central incisor. Following leveling, alignment, and endodontic therapy, the maxillary fused left central incisor was sectioned and the mesial portion extracted as planned. Fixed orthodontic treatment commenced after 10 days to align the maxillary anterior segment. After completion, the midline diastema was closed with veneers. This case highlights the treatment options of a fused tooth and the need for multidis

Comprehensive therapy of a fusion between a mandibular lateral incisor and supernumerary tooth: case report.

The term fusion is used to define a developmental anomaly characterised by the union of two adjacent teeth. In the case reported here, clinical and radiographic examinations suggested a unilateral fusion between the mandibular left permanent incisor and a super-numerary tooth. Radiographs showed that the fused teeth had two distinct pulp chambers and canals. A diagnosis of chronic periapical abscess of the supernumerary tooth was made. Before root canal therapy, a periodontal surgical procedure was performed to section the central incisor and its fused supernumerary. Also, odontoplasty was per…

Mosasaurs and snakes have a periodontal ligament: timing and extent of calcification, not tissue complexity, determines tooth attachment mode in reptiles.

Squamates present a unique challenge to our understanding of dental evolution in amniotes because they are the only extant tooth-bearing group for which a ligamentous tooth attachment is considered to be absent. This has led to the assumption that mammals and crocodilians have convergently evolved a ligamentous tooth attachment, composed of root cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, whereas squamates are thought to possess a single bone of attachment tissue that fuses teeth to the jaws. The identity and homology of tooth attachment tissues between squamates, crocodilians, and mamm
