Tonsillar Microbial Signature of Fusobacterium nucleatum Associated With Epstein-Barr Virus Latency.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) acquired in childhood is asymptomatic, with the tonsils as the entry site to infect B lymphocytes and establish latency. Little is known about whether the microbiota influences EBV persistent infection. We aimed to characterize the tonsil microbiome with different EBV latency types. A cohort of 60 children with tonsillar hyperplasia were included. EBV latency types (0/I/II/III) and lytic phase were determined by immunohistochemistry. 16S NGS of lymphoid tonsillar tissue was carried out with the Illumina platform. Bioinformatic analysis was carried out with QIIME2 2023.

Forgotten disease: an atypical case of Lemierre syndrome presenting as a soft tissue abscess.

Lemierre syndrome (LS) is an acute oropharyngeal infection with secondary septic thrombophlebitis and distant septic embolisation. A 29-year-old woman with sore throat, dyspnoea and left shoulder pain, who was on levofloxacin for 3 days, presented with worsening symptoms. She was tachycardic, tachypneic and hypoxic on presentation. CT of neck and chest revealed multiple loculated abscesses on her left lower neck and shoulder, right peritonsillar abscess, thrombosis of the right external jugular vein and multiple bilateral septic emboli to the lungs. She was started on clindamycin and ampicilli

A case of liver abscess and fusobacterium septicemia.

Fusobacterium species are well described as the causative pathogen in Lemierre's syndrome, a suppurative thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein. However, they are less recognized for a unique variant of Lemierre's syndrome presenting with invasive intraabdominal infection and associated portal vein thrombosis. We describe a case of Fusobacterium nucleatum with hepatic abscess and septic pylephlebitis.

Fusobacterium necrophorum septic arthritis of the hip: A case-report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Fusobacterium necrophorum is a rare but significant cause of septic arthritis, typically following oropharyngeal infections in adolescents. This anaerobic pathogen, commonly associated with Lemierre's syndrome, can lead to joint infections, posing risks for severe morbidity if diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Awareness and timely intervention are essential for preventing long-term joint damage. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 19-year-old woman who developed high fever and acute right hip pain one week after a sore throat. Imaging revealed septic arthritis, with F. necro

A Pediatric Case of Fusobacterium necrophorum Mastoiditis and Meningitis Case Report in a Healthy Child and Review of the Literature.

In infants and children, bacterial meningitis caused by anaerobic bacteria is rare. However, a serious infection with the anaerobe Fusobacterium necrophorum can occur in previously healthy children with a peak incidence in preschool children and in adolescents. As the clinical presentation can be very similar to meningitis caused by aerobic bacteria, one should consider Fusobacterium necrophorum as the causative agent when preceded by or associated with otitis media with purulent otorrhea or mastoiditis, in combination with minimal or no improvement on empiric antibiotic treatment. As this pat

Feel so bac: is Fusobacterium the suspect causing endometriosis?

Recent work by Muraoka and colleagues reports that the Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum is detected in the uterus of 64% of women with endometriosis. Fusobacterium infection causes macrophage infiltration, transforming growth factor-β production, and transgelin upregulation in human and mouse endometria as well as endometriotic lesion development in a mouse model of endometriosis.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition in oral cancer cells induced by prolonged and persistent Fusobacterium nucleatum stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have reported the effects of Fusobacterium nucleatum stimulation on oral cancer cells. However, given that these studies typically span a stimulation period of three days to eight days, the in vitro studies conducted to date may not fully mimic the oral cancer environment, which involves constant exposure to oral commensal bacteria. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of prolonged and persistent Fusobacterium nucleatum infection on oral cancer cells. METHODS: Human tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells were continuously stimulated with Fusobacterium nucl

The first case report: diagnosis and management of necrotizing fusobacterium lung abscess via BALF next-generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium necrophorum (F. necrophorum)-induced necrotizing pneumonia is a rare but severe pulmonary infection. Insufficient microbiological detection methods can lead to diagnostic difficulties. METHODS: We report a case of F. necrophorum lung abscess diagnosed by next-generation sequencing (NGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). RESULTS: BALF-NGS detected F. necrophorum, guiding subsequent targeted antibiotic therapy. With active drainage and metronidazole treatment, the patient's condition was effectively treated. CONCLUSION: BALF-NGS is a valuable tool for the rapid

Complicated otitis media caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Fusobacterium necrophorum is implicated as an aetiological agent in a variety of necrotic diseases, such as Lemièrre's syndrome (LS) in humans. LS was initially described as septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein secondary to an acute oropharyngeal infection. Other primary sources of infection include parotitis, otitis media, sinusitis, odontogenic infection and mastoiditis. In the pre-antibiotic era LS carried a high mortality. This has been reduced as a result of the widespread use of antibiotics, but there is still a definite morbidity and mortality associated with infection w

Septic thrombophlebitis of portal and splenic vein secondary to Fusobacterium nucleatum: A case report of an abdominal variant of lemierre syndrome.

RATIONALE: Septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein also known as Lemierre syndrome occurs secondary to an oropharyngeal infection often leading to septic embolisms to distant sites. Anaerobic gram-negative bacillus, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Fusobacterium necrophorum are commonly isolated organisms. Fusobacterium species has also been reported to complicate an intra-abdominal infection leading to septic thrombophlebitis of portal vein also known as pylephlebitis or abdominal variant of lemierre syndrome. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a middle-aged female patient with chief

The role of adhesins of Fusobacterium nucleatum in colorectal cancer - a structural perspective.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is frequently found in the colon microbiome of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. The bacterium is not only a passive bystander of CRC, but is actively involved in disease progression through mediating tumor growth stimulation, metastasis, and immune evasion. These outcomes are achieved through the action of several adhesins that are located on the outer membrane surface of F. nucleatum, which bind to different receptors on tumor or immune cells. Adhesin-receptor interaction as the initial step of host-pathogen interaction then triggers signal transduction pathways respo

Fusobacterium nucleatum and Gastric Cancer: An Emerging Connection.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a Gram-negative anaerobe traditionally associated with periodontal disease, has recently emerged as a putative contributor to gastric carcinoma (GC) pathogenesis. Beyond its detection in gastric tissues, particularly in patients negative for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or in advanced GC cases, F. nucleatum exerts diverse oncogenic effects. It promotes GC progression by modulating the tumor microenvironment through IL-17/NF-κB signaling, inducing tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs), upregulating PD-L1 expression, and enhancing immune evasion. Moreover

Fabrication of hyaluronic acid-inulin coated Enterococcus faecium for colon-targeted delivery to fight Fusobacterium nucleatum.

The abundance of Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is highly associated with the development and poor prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC), which is regarded as a promising target for CRC. However, until now, the novel strategy to clear F. nucleatum in the colon and CRC has not been well proposed. Herein, a probiotic strain Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium, EF47) is verified to secrete various organic acids and bacteriocins to exert superior antimicrobial activity towards F. nucleatum. However, the oral delivery of EF47 is affected by the complex digestive tract environment, so we design

Associations Between Findings of Fusobacterium necrophorum or β-Hemolytic Streptococci and Complications in Pharyngotonsillitis-A Registry-Based Study in Southern Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Most pharyngotonsillitis guidelines focus on the identification of group A streptococci (GAS), guided by clinical scores determining whom to test with a rapid antigen detection test. Nevertheless, many patients testing negative with this test are evaluated for group C/G streptococci (GCS/GGS) and Fusobacterium necrophorum, yet their importance remains debated. Our primary aim was to evaluate associations between complications and findings of F. necrophorum, GAS, or GCS/GGS in pharyngotonsillitis. METHODS: This was a retrospective, registry-based study of pharyngotonsillitis cases

Lemierre's Syndrome Due to the Zoonotic Anaerobe Bacteroides pyogenes: Case Report and Literature Review.

Although Fusobacterium necrophorum is well described as an emerging pathogen of acute mastoiditis in young children, infection with other anaerobes can lead to similar severe sequelae including intracranial and extracranial suppurative thrombophlebitis and sepsis. We describe a patient whose unremarkable exposure history assumed increased significance upon obtaining the results of 16S next generation sequencing from a surgical specimen. The novel pathogen Bacteroides pyogenes is reviewed herein.
