A speed-of-play limit reduces gambling expenditure in an online roulette game: Results of an online experiment.

UK online casino games are presently not subject to any limitations on speed-of-play or stakes. One recent policy proposal is to ensure that no online casino game can be played faster than its in-person equivalent. Another policy proposal is to limit the maximum stakes on online casino games to £2, to match the current stake limit on electronic gambling machines. This research experimentally investigated the speed-of-play proposal subject to a £2 stake limit, in an online experiment using incentivized payouts based on £4 endowments and a commercial online roulette game, which was slowed-down i

Effects of game-based chin tuck against resistance exercise vs head-lift exercise in patients with dysphagia after stroke: An assessor-blind, randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of game-based chin-tuck against resistance exercise and head-lift exercise on swallowing function and compliance of patients with dysphagia after stroke. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 37 patients with stroke were randomly assigned to 2 groups. The experimental group performed game-based chin tuck against resistance exercise, whereas the control group performed traditional head-lift exercise. The videofluoroscopic dysphagia scale (VDS) and penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) were used to evaluate swallowing function. In addition, the functional oral intake s

Efficacy of bibliotherapy combined with games to reduce fear of the dark in young children: results from a clinical trial.

UNLABELLED: Intense fear of the dark is a common issue among children, which can interfere with their daily functioning at family, social, and academic levels. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a psychotherapeutic intervention based on bibliotherapy combined with play to overcome the fear of the dark in children between 4 and 8 years old. A total of 38 children participated, who were assigned to the experimental and control conditions on the waiting list. The bibliotherapy intervention in the experimental condition involved reading a book and playing the games proposed in each ch

The Near-Miss Effect in Slot Machines: A Review and Experimental Analysis Over Half a Century Later.

In games of chance, a near miss is said to occur when feedback for a loss approximates a win. For instance, obtaining "cherry-cherry-lemon" on a slot machine could be considered a near miss. Sixty-six years ago, B.F. Skinner first proposed the idea that near-miss events might reinforce continued play in slot machines, and despite some inconsistencies in the experimental literature, belief in this "near-miss effect" has remained strong. In the present manuscript, we will review this literature and present experimental assessments of the near-miss effect on the frequency of the gambling response

The Iowa Gambling Task in Parkinson's disease: A meta-analysis on effects of disease and medication.

BACKGROUND: Decision-making under uncertainty as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task has frequently been studied in Parkinson's disease. The dopamine overdose hypothesis assumes that dopaminergic effects follow an inverted U-shaped function, restoring some cognitive functions while overdosing others. The present work quantitatively summarizes disease and medication effects on task performance and evaluates evidence for the dopamine overdose hypothesis of impaired decision-making in Parkinson's disease. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed to identify studies examining the Iowa

Disadvantageous decision-making on a rodent gambling task is associated with increased motor impulsivity in a population of male rats.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is understood as a range of behaviours, but the association between these behaviours is not well understood. Although high motor impulsivity is a key symptom of disorders like pathological gambling and addiction, in which decision-making on laboratory tasks is compromised, there have been no clear demonstrations that choice and motor impulsivity are associated in the general population. We examined this association in a large population of rodents. METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis on behavioural data from 211 manipulation-naive male animals that performed a rodent

The inter-group comparison-intra-group cooperation hypothesis: comparisons between groups increase efficiency in public goods provision.

Identifying methods to increase cooperation and efficiency in public goods provision is of vital interest for human societies. The methods that have been proposed often incur costs that (more than) destroy the efficiency gains through increased cooperation. It has for example been shown that inter-group conflict increases intra-group cooperation, however at the cost of collective efficiency. We propose a new method that makes use of the positive effects associated with inter-group competition but avoids the detrimental (cost) effects of a structural conflict. We show that the mere comparison t

Experiments investigating cooperative types in humans: a complement to evolutionary theory and simulations.

Unlike other species, humans cooperate in large, distantly related groups, a fact that has long presented a puzzle to biologists. The pathway by which adaptations for large-scale cooperation among nonkin evolved in humans remains a subject of vigorous debate. Results from theoretical analyses and agent-based simulations suggest that evolutionary dynamics need not yield homogeneous populations, but can instead generate a polymorphic population that consists of individuals who vary in their degree of cooperativeness. These results resonate with the recent increasing emphasis on the importance of

Immersive experience of online gaming among Chinese college students: the enhanced effect of sleep deprivation on emotion regulation and problematic gaming within the I-PACE model.

Online gaming addiction has become an important issue affecting the physical and mental health of college students, but its formation mechanism remains incompletely understood. Based on the I-PACE (Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution) model, this study explores the influence and mechanism of sleep deprivation on emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) and problematic online gaming among Chinese college students through experimental design. The study recruited 300 college students (mean age 20.5 years, 48% male) in China, randomly assigned t

Effectiveness of Serious Game Activities in Raising Palliative Care Awareness Among Nursing Students.

Serious games have an important role in nursing education to support the development of students' knowledge, skills, satisfaction, and self-confidence. Serious games in the development of basic nursing skills are defined as interactive computer applications that present a challenging goal, offer an enjoyable and engaging experience, incorporate scoring mechanisms, and equip users with useful skills, knowledge, or attitudes. They provide students with opportunities for active learning, solving clinical problems, and gaining experience in a risk-free environment. Serious gaming applications ensu

The use of messages in altering risky gambling behavior in experienced gamblers.

The present study was an experimental analogue that examined the relationship between gambling-related irrational beliefs and risky gambling behavior. Eighty high-frequency gamblers were randomly assigned to four conditions and played a chance-based computer game in a laboratory setting. Depending on the condition, during the game a pop-up screen repeatedly displayed either accurate or inaccurate messages concerning the game, neutral messages, or no messages. Consistent with a cognitive-behavioral model of gambling, accurate messages that correctly described the random contingencies governing

The Virtual Threat Effect: A Test of Competing Explanations for the Effects of Racial Stereotyping in Video Games on Players' Cognitions.

Past research provides evidence that embodying a racially stereotyped African American video game character triggers stereotyped thinking among White players. However, the mechanisms through which virtual racial embodiment of a negatively stereotyped character in a video game impacts stereotyped thinking are still unknown. This study expands on past research and utilizes a between-subjects experimental design to test two possible theoretical explanations: the virtual threat effect and presence. On the one hand, embodying a negatively stereotyped African American character may elicit stereotype

The effect of individual differences on Pavlovian conditioning in specific Internet-use disorders.

The I-PACE model suggests that Internet-use disorders result from the interplay of individual vulnerabilities and cognitive and affective processes. As in substance use disorders, Pavlovian conditioning processes are attributed a key role. However, and despite progress in identifying individual vulnerabilities, factors influencing appetitive conditioning remain poorly understood. We therefore conducted a Pavlovian conditioning experiment in which individuals with risky as well as non-problematic use of either gaming or buying-shopping applications learned to associate different abstract stimul

Enhancing Cognition, Self-Efficacy, and Postural Control Skills of Persons with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders Using Immersive Puzzle Video Games.

Introduction: Players' engagement in video games is dependent on their level of immersion in the virtual gaming environment. Tabletop (TT) puzzle video games (PVGs), which are usually played in a sedentary posture and require upper limb motor skill, improve players' cognition and upper limb motor performance. Immersive PVGs, such as Angry Birds, have been created recently. These games are played in a standing mode and require the players to shift their center of gravity (COG) to achieve the gaming goals. Their task-oriented nature makes it possible for these video games to improve players' sel

Fluid balance and electrolyte losses in collegiate male soccer players in practice and game under different environments.

The environment poses significant physiologic challenges to athletic performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate fluid balance and electrolyte losses in Chinese collegiate male soccer players during practices and games under different environments. Twelve male players were recruited across 38 practices (P) and 17 games (G) over a 9-month period, conducted in hot (H) and cool (C) environments, yielding four experimental conditions: G + H, P + H, G + C, and P + C. Fluid balance parameters comprised body mass loss (BML), urine specific gravity (USG), and sweat compositions. On-field

Association between video game addiction, stress, and bruxism in adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to examine the association between video game addiction stress levels, and both awake and sleep bruxism in adolescents. Given the increasing prevalence of digital addiction among young populations, understanding its potential impact on oral health is essential. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 300 adolescents aged 10–19 years. Participants completed an online survey assessing video game addiction using the short form of the Digital Game Addiction Scale − 21 (DGAS-21), stress levels using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and bruxism through self-r

Brain activation for response inhibition under gaming cue distraction in internet gaming disorder.

We evaluated neural substrates related to the loss of control in college students with internet gaming disorder (IGD). We hypothesized that deficit in response inhibition under gaming cue distraction was the possible mechanism for the loss of control internet use. Eleven cases of IGD and 11 controls performed Go/NoGo tasks with/without gaming distraction in the functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner. When the gaming picture was shown as background while individuals were performing Go/NoGo tasks, the IGD group committed more commission errors. The control group increased their brain acti

Acute hunger does not always undermine prosociality.

It has been argued that, when they are acutely hungry, people act in self-protective ways by keeping resources to themselves rather than sharing them. In four studies, using experimental, quasi-experimental, and correlational designs (total N = 795), we examine the effects of acute hunger on prosociality in a wide variety of non-interdependent tasks (e.g. dictator game) and interdependent tasks (e.g. public goods games). While our procedures successfully increase subjective hunger and decrease blood glucose, we do not find significant effects of hunger on prosociality. This is true for both de

A remotely-applied, cognitive control-based video game intervention to reduce depressive symptoms in a sub-clinical population: A randomized controlled trial (RCT).

Depressive symptoms are prevalent among young adults, with cognitive theories suggesting that impaired cognitive control contributes to sustained negative mood and depressive symptoms. This study investigated the feasibility and efficacy of a remotely-applied, tablet-based cognitive control video game, Legends of Hoa'manu (LoH), for reducing depressive symptoms in subclinical adults. A randomized controlled trial (NCT05447091) was conducted with 173 participants (mean age 33 ± 11.6 years; 75.1 % female) exhibiting at least a minimal level of depressive symptoms (PHQ-8 ≥ 5).
