Risk assessment of workers' exposure to BTEX and hazardous area classification at gasoline stations.

Vaporization of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds pollutes the air and causes health hazards at gasoline stations. This study revealed the risk of BTEX exposure according to the hazardous area classification at gasoline stations. The risk assessment of gasoline workers from a representative group of 47 stations, which followed the United States Environmental Protection Agency-IRIS method of assessing BTEX exposure, was expressed as the hazard index (HI). A result of matrix multipliers of the hazardous exposure index and fire possibility from flammable gas classified h…

Aerobic degradation of trichloroethylene by co-metabolism using phenol and gasoline as growth substrates.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a common groundwater contaminant of toxic and carcinogenic concern. Aerobic co-metabolic processes are the predominant pathways for TCE complete degradation. In this study, Pseudomonas fluorescens was studied as the active microorganism to degrade TCE under aerobic condition by co-metabolic degradation using phenol and gasoline as growth substrates. Operating conditions influencing TCE degradation efficiency were optimized. TCE co-metabolic degradation rate reached the maximum of 80% under the optimized conditions of degradation time of 3 days, initial OD600 of micro…

Comparing the effects of weathering and microbial degradation on gasoline using principal components analysis.

Ignitable liquid residues recovered from a fire scene will often show signs of weathering as a result of exposure to the heat of the fire. In addition, when the substrate is rich in organic matter, both weathering and microbial degradation may be observed. In this study, 20 μL aliquots of fresh gasoline samples were intentionally weathered and also subjected to microbial degradation in potting soil. These samples were then analyzed using a passive adsorption-elution recovery method and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Peak areas from compounds of interest were normalized and autoscaled an…

Effect of Pentanol Partitioning on Solubilization of Tetrachloroethylene and Gasoline by Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Micelles.

The effect of interfacial pentanol concentrations on solubilization of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and gasoline by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles was compared to that for dodecane solubilization, which had been measured in a previous study. The solubilization of PCE and gasoline reached their maximum values at a 1 : 3 SDS-to-pentanol molar ratio in the interface. As pentanol concentrations increased beyond that necessary for interfacial saturation, solubilization of PCE and gasoline decreased. This behavior was similar to that observed when dodecane was the oil phase. Electrical conductiv…

Mode transition and fragmentation behavior of ash-catalyzed soot oxidation in gasoline particulate filters.

Although ash deposition is known to promote soot oxidation in gasoline particulate filters (GPFs), the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, two ash surrogates (SiO2 and Al2O3) were employed to investigate the evolution of soot morphology and nanostructure at different oxidation degrees under a 16.6% O2 atmosphere at 650 °C, with a particular emphasis on oxidation mode transition and oxidation-induced fragmentation behavior. Results show that distinct hollow structures are observed in ash-free soot at late oxidation stages. Such hollow structures are largely suppressed in the pr…

Process-Specific Evaporative Emission of Semivolatile/Intermediate-Volatility Organic Compounds from Modern Gasoline Vehicles.

Evaporative emissions from gasoline vehicles of semivolatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) are a significant yet underestimated source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Current models often neglect this contribution due to a lack of molecular-level data. Here, we employ comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC-TOFMS) to characterize S/IVOCs from all major evaporative processes: diurnal breathing loss, hot soak, running loss, and refueling. Our results reveal that S/IVOCs, particularly IVOCs, accounted for 16.8-58.3% of total emissions and dominate t…

Gasoline Adulteration Analysis Based on Raman Spectroscopy and a Multi-Scale Convolutional Neural Network.

The quality and safety of gasoline are critical for energy distribution and market regulations. Consequently, rapid and nondestructive detection methods based on spectroscopy combined with intelligent algorithms have garnered significant attention. However, existing approaches often separate adulterant identification and concentration prediction, limiting their application in complex adulteration scenarios. To address these limitations, this study develops an attention-based multi-scale convolutional neural network, termed Multi-Scale Attention Fusion Convolutional Neural Network, based on Ram…

Synergistic Effects of SO2 and NH3 Coexistence on SOA Formation from Gasoline Evaporative Emissions.

Vehicular evaporative emissions make an increasing contribution to anthropogenic sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), thus contributing to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. However, few studies have been conducted on SOA formation from vehicle evaporative VOCs under complex pollution conditions with the coexistence of NOx, SO2, and NH3. In this study, the synergistic effects of SO2 and NH3 on SOA formation from gasoline evaporative VOCs with NOx were examined using a 30 m3 smog chamber with the aid of a series of mass spectrometers. Compared with the systems involving SO2 or …

High-Quality Gasoline Directly from Syngas by Dual Metal Oxide-Zeolite (OX-ZEO) Catalysis.

Despite significant efforts towards the direct conversion of syngas into liquid fuels, the selectivity remains a challenge, particularly with regard to high-quality gasoline with a high octane number and a low content of aromatic compounds. Herein, we show that zeolites with 1D ten-membered-ring (10-MR) channel structures such as SAPO-11 and ZSM-22 in combination with zinc- and manganese-based metal oxides (Zna Mnb Ox ) enable the selective synthesis of gasoline-range hydrocarbons C5 -C11 directly from syngas. The gasoline selectivity reached 76.7 % among hydrocarbons, with only 2.3 % CH4 at 2…

Metabolomic changes in murine serum following inhalation exposure to gasoline and diesel engine emissions.

The adverse health effects of environmental exposure to gaseous and particulate components of vehicular emissions are a major concern among urban populations. A link has been established between respiratory exposure to vehicular emissions and the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but the mechanisms driving this interaction remain unknown. Chronic inhalation exposure to mixed vehicle emissions has been linked to CVD in animal models. This study evaluated the temporal effects of acute exposure to mixed vehicle emissions (MVE; mixed gasoline and diesel emissions) on potentially active …

Diurnal and seasonal variability of gasoline-related volatile organic compound emissions in Riverside, California.

On- and off-road mobile sources are the dominant contributors to urban anthropogenic volatile organic compound (AVOC) emissions. Analyses of gasoline samples from California for both summer and winter indicate significant differences in liquid fuel and vapor chemical composition due to intentional seasonal adjustments. Ambient concentrations of 55 VOCs were measured via in situ gas chromatography in the 2005 Study of Organic Aerosols at Riverside (SOAR) during both summer and fall. A chemical mass balance analysis was used to differentiate vapor pressure-driven VOC emissions from other motor v…

Kinetic Modeling and Techno-Economic Analysis of a Methanol-to-Gasoline Production Repurposed Refinery Equipment.

Methanol-to-gasoline (MtG) is an alternative process for the production of liquid fuel that involves the conversion of methanol into light and heavy hydrocarbons. The attractiveness of this option relies on multiple feedstocks that can be used to produce methanol, which can impact the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere in comparison to petroleum-based feedstocks. However, one of the challenges of this alternative gasoline production is its high investment cost. This study presents a solution to increase affordability by using repurposed equipment from petrochemical industries. The st…

Post-mortem detection of gasoline residues in lung tissue and heart blood of fire victims.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether gasoline residues could be detected post-mortem in lung tissue and heart blood of fire victims. The lungs and heart blood were investigated to determine whether they were suitable samples for collection and could be collected without contamination during an autopsy. Three sets of test subjects (pig carcasses) were investigated under two different fire scenarios. Test subjects 1 were anaesthetized following animal ethics approval, inhaled gasoline vapours for a short period and then euthanized. The carcasses were clothed and placed in a house w…

Oxygenated gasoline release in the unsaturated zone, Part 2: Downgradient transport of ethanol and hydrocarbons.

In the event of a gasoline spill containing oxygenated compounds such as ethanol and MTBE, it is important to consider the impacts these compounds might have on subsurface contamination. One of the main concerns commonly associated with ethanol is that it might decrease the biodegradation of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds, leading to an increase in the hydrocarbon dissolved plume lengths. The first part of this study (Part 1) showed that when gasoline containing ethanol infiltrates the unsaturated zone, ethanol is likely to partition to and be retained in the unsaturated zone pore water. In th…
