[Perspectives of genetic research in eating disorders using the example of anorexia nervosa].

Genetic mechanisms are relevant for both body weight regulation and eating disorders (e.g. anorexia nervosa, AN). Although genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have so far identified about 100 chromosomal regions that influence body weight, only a small part of the variance could be explained by molecular genetic factors. For AN GWAS up to now did not reveal genome-wide significant loci. There are first hints for epigenetic mechanisms involved in the described phenotypes. Epigenomics can improve our understanding of the regulation of body weight including hunger (AN) and overnutrition (obesi

Gout in 2013. Imaging, genetics and therapy: gout research continues apace.

In 2013, much progress has occurred in gout research. Imaging continues to help elucidate aspects of pathophysiology and now suggests that healing of erosions could occur when urate levels are reduced dramatically. New genetic loci associated with hyperuricaemia have been identified and management strategies for prophylaxis of gout flares continue to evolve.

Etiology of infantile autism: a review of recent advances in genetic and neurobiological research.

The etiology of autism is complex, and in most cases the underlying pathologic mechanisms are unknown. Autism is a hetereogeneous disorder, diagnosed subjectively on the basis of a large number of criteria. Recent research has investigated genetics, in utero insults and brain function as well as neurochemical and immunological factors. On the basis of family and twin studies, there appears to be a genetic basis for a wide "autistic syndrome." About a quarter of cases of autism are associated with genetic disorders such as fragile X syndrome or with infectious diseases such as congenital rubell

Ferrets and genetically modified ferrets as model organisms in biomedical research: a review.

Domestic ferrets have served as experimental animals for over a century, offering a balance between practicality and biological relevance while bridging the gap between rodent and non-human primate models. Their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans, particularly in the respiratory and nervous systems, make ferrets an invaluable model for biomedical research across various disciplines. Recent advances in genome-editing technologies have enabled the efficient creation of genetically modified (GM) ferrets, significantly expanding their applications in basic and translational resear

Research on the Generation of High-Purity Vortex Beams Aided by Genetic Algorithms.

Vortex beams (VBs) generated by plasmonic metasurfaces hold great potential in the field of information transmission due to their unique helical phase wavefronts and infinite eigenstates. However, achieving perfect multiplexing and superposition of VBs with different orders remains a challenging issue in nanophotonics research. In this paper, based on a single-layer metallic porous metasurface structure applicable to the infrared spectrum, VBs with orders 2, 4, 6, and 8 are realized through the arrangement of annular elliptical apertures. Moreover, perfect VBs are achieved by optimizing key st

Research in the genetics of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma: a bibliometric analysis from 2002 to 2022.

Over the past two decades, there has been a significant growth in articles focusing on the genetics of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL). We used bibliometric methods to investigate the historical changes and trend in PPGL research. There was a total of 1263 articles published in English from 2002 to 2022 included in our study. The number of annual publications and citations in this field has been increasing in the past 20 years. Furthermore, most of the publications originated from the European countries and the United States. The co-occurrence analysis showed close cooperation betwee

Using BXD mouse strains in vision research: A systems genetics approach.

We illustrate the growing power of the BXD family of mice (recombinant inbred strains from a cross of C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice) and companion bioinformatic tools to study complex genome-phenome relations related to glaucoma. Over the past 16 years, our group has integrated powerful murine resources and web-accessible tools to identify networks modulating visual system traits-from photoreceptors to the visual cortex. Recent studies focused on retinal ganglion cells and glaucoma risk factors, including intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), and susceptibility of cellular st

Genetic diversity of laboratory strains and implications for research: The case of Aedes aegypti.

The yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti), is the primary vector of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya fever, among other arboviral diseases. It is also a popular laboratory model in vector biology due to its ease of rearing and manipulation in the lab. Established laboratory strains have been used worldwide in thousands of studies for decades. Laboratory evolution of reference strains and contamination among strains are potential severe problems that could dramatically change experimental outcomes and thus is a concern in vector biology. We analyzed laboratory and field colonies of Ae. aegypti and

Imaging genetics paradigms in depression research: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Imaging genetics studies involving participants with major depressive disorder (MDD) have expanded. Nevertheless, findings have been inconsistent. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of imaging genetics studies that enrolled MDD participants across major databases through June 30th, 2017. Sixty-five studies met eligibility criteria (N = 4034 MDD participants and 3293 controls), and there was substantial between-study variability in the methodological quality of included studies. However, few replicated findings emerged from this literature with only 22 studies providing da

Heredity, Genetics and Orthodontics - How Much Has This Research Really Helped?

Uncovering the genetic factors that correlate with a clinical deviation of previously unknown etiology helps to diminish the unknown variation influencing the phenotype. Clinical studies, particularly those that consider the effects of an appliance or treatment regimen on growth, need to be a part of these types of genetic investigations in the future. While the day-to-day utilization of "testing" for genetic factors is not ready for practice yet, genetic testing for monogenic traits such as Primary Failure of Eruption (PFE) and Class III malocclusion is showing more promise as knowledge and t

The link between child abuse and psychopathology: a review of neurobiological and genetic research.

Childhood abuse is associated with later psychopathology, including conduct disorder, antisocial personality disorder, anxiety and depression as well as a heightened risk of health and social problems. However, the neurobiological mechanisms by which childhood adversity increases vulnerability to psychopathology remain poorly understood. There is likely to be a complex interaction between environmental experiences (such as abuse) and individual differences in risk versus protective genes, which influences the neurobiological circuitry underpinning psychological and emotional development. Potential allergenicity research of Cry1C protein from genetically modified rice.

With the development of genetically modified crops, there has been a growing interest in available approaches to assess the potential allergenicity of novel gene products. We were not sure whether Cry1C could induce allergy. We examined the protein with three other proteins to determine the potential allergenicity of Cry1C protein from genetically modified rice. Female Brown Norway (BN) rats received 0.1 mg peanut agglutinin (PNA), 1mg potato acid phosphatase (PAP), 1mg ovalbumin (OVA) or 5 mg purified Cry1C protein dissolved in 1 mL water by daily gavage for 42 days to test potential allergen

Annual research review: impact of advances in genetics in understanding developmental psychopathology.

It was hoped that diagnostic guidelines for, and treatment of, child psychiatric disorders in DSM-5 would be informed by the wealth of clinical genetic research related to neurodevelopmental disorders. In spite of remarkable advances in genetic technology, this has not been the case. Candidate gene, genome-wide association, and rare copy number variant (CNV) studies have been carried out for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Autism, Tourette's Syndrome, and schizophrenia, with intriguing results, but environmental factors, incomplete penetrance, pleiotropy, and genetic heterogen

Genetics research in systemic lupus erythematosus for clinicians: methodology, progress, and controversies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Clinical journals are reporting genetic associations with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with increasing frequency. Interpreting these studies is difficult for clinicians without rigorous training in epidemiology, statistics, and genetics. In this review, we discuss basic issues important to understanding and contextualizing new genetic association studies. We, therefore, highlight literature related to methodology as well as recent genetic discoveries in SLE. RECENT FINDINGS: Functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and/or haplotypes have now been identified f
