Quantitative studies of cell size in the cat's dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus following visual deprivation.

The effects of visual deprivation upon dorsal lateral geniculate (DLG) cell size were compared for seven kittens reared with monocular lid-suture (MD), seven with binocular lid-suture (BD), and six with one eye lid-sutured and the other eye enucleated soon after birth (MD-E). Six additional kittens were reared normally for comparison. For each kitten the cross-sectional areas of 300 cells were measured in one or both nuclei. Measurements were taken from the binocular segment of laminae A and A1 and the monocular segment of lamina A. In agreement with previous studies, cells in the binocular se

[Early ultrastructural reactions in various parts of the visual analyzer in guinea pigs after thermogenic microwave irradiation].

A single total radiation of guinea pigs by means of microwaves of thermogenic intensity (energy density stream 60 mVt/sm2) and exposition fo … e synaptic apparatus. In the cerebral visual centers a higher reactivity of neurons of the external geniculate bodies than in the visual cortex is noted, but ultrastructural disturbances of the hematoencephalic barrier and synapses of the visual cortex are more manifested. Early ultrastructural changes in the optic nerve are least manifested.

Higher order visual processing in the visual cortex.

This chapter covers how the cortex combines visual signals from parallel retinocortical channels into perceptually useful neural representations. The retina sends signals to the visual cortex about the surfaces of objects, including shape, lightness and color, and location in space. One of the most important properties of early visual cortex is the visuotopic map of the contralateral visual field built from the neural images of the visual world in the left and right eyes that are brought into spatial register in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus. The visual cortex computes t

Microvascularization of thalamus and metathalamus in common tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

The microangioarchitecture of the thalamus and metathalamus in common tree shrew (Tupaia glis) was studied using vascular corrosion cast/stereomicroscope and SEM technique. The arterial supply of the thalamus and metathalamus was found to originate from perforating branches of the posterior communicating artery, the posterior cerebral artery, the middle cerebral artery, and the anterior choroidal artery. These perforating arteries gave rise to numerous bipinnate arterioles which in turn, with decreasing vessel diameters, branched into a non-fenestrated capillary bed. Venous blood from the supe

Morphology of single, physiologically identified retinogeniculate Y-cell axons in the cat following damage to visual cortex at birth.

It has been reported previously that neurons in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of cats with neonatal damage to visual cortex (KVC cats) have receptive fields that are abnormally large and that the receptive fields of these neurons sometimes do not appear to conform to the normal retinotopic order in the LGN. A primary aim of this study was to determine if these physiological abnormalities are related to inappropriate patterns of retinogeniculate connections. We therefore have analyzed the terminal arbors of retinogeniculate axons in adult cats that had received a lesion of visual

Axon trajectories and pattern of terminal arborization during the prenatal development of the cat's retinogeniculate pathway.

In this study we have examined the trajectories taken by populations of ganglion cell axons and the spatial gradients of terminal arbor maturity within the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) during the prenatal development of the cat's visual system. To do so, an in vitro method of labeling optic tract axons from fetal brains between embryonic day 37 (E37) and postnatal day 2 (P2) with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used. At the earliest ages studied (E37-E53), optic axons leave the optic tract to run across the LGN toward their sites of termination in straight trajectories parallel to each ot

Layering in lamina 6 of cat striate cortex.

Retrograde transport after the injection of the tracer, wheatgerm agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase, into different neural sites revealed a layering of labelled cells in lamina 6 of the striate cortex of the cat. Depending on their destination, efferent cells were clustered at different levels in lamina 6 so that cells projecting to the claustrum congregated in the lower half of the lamina while those projecting to other parts of the visual cortex, in either ipsi- or contralateral hemispheres, were found principally in the upper half and the cells with axons passing to the lateral geniculate n

Spatial and temporal summation in impaired regions of the visual field.

1. Spatial and temporal summation have been measured in perimetrically impaired regions of the visual field. Two classes of impairment have been studied: that resulting from lesions in the pre-geniculate visual pathways, and that resulting from post-geniculate lesions (optic radiation and/or striate cortex).2. Control measurements were made in the perimetrically normal visual fields of subjects without visual pathway damage.3. Spatial summation was found altered in all impaired visual fields: the greater the threshold elevation produced by the lesion, the more nearly complete was spatial summa

Galactosialidosis: neuropathological findings in a case of the late-infantile type.

The neuropathological findings in a 13-year-old Japanese male showing decrease of sialidase and beta-galactosidase activities are reported. The patient was the product of normal pregnancy to consanguineous parents. He started to sit at 8 months, stand at 20 months and walk at age of 2; mental retardation, visual disturbance, cerebellar ataxia, myoclonus and epilepsy developed by the age of 10, and he died at 13. Neuropathological investigation revealed neuronal loss and storage. Severe loss of neurons was observed in the thalamus, globus pallidus, lateral geniculate body, gracile nucleus, Purk

Quadruple sectoranopia and sectorial optic atrophy: a syndrome of the distal anterior choroidal artery.

Loss of upper and lower homonymous sectors in the visual field, and wasting of corresponding sectors in the retinal nerve fibre layer, followed ligation of the distal part of the anterior choroidal artery in a patient with a meningioma of the velum interpositum. Clinical and radiological evidence indicated that the visual pathway was damaged within that part of the lateral geniculate body that is served by the anterior choroidal artery.

Abnormal retinotopic organization of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the tyrosinase-negative albino cat.

Visual defects associated with hypopigmentation have been studied extensively in Siamese and albino cats. Previous research on tyrosinase-negative albino cats has shown that (1) approximately 95% of all nasal and temporal retinal fibers cross at the optic chiasm, and (2) ocular dominance columns normally found in cortex are replaced with hemiretinal domains. In this study, we compared the retinotopic organization of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) and visual cortex in albino cats. Extracellular recordings were conducted in the LGNd, area 17, and area 18 of six albino cats. Recepti

Histological and Biochemical Alterations in the Superior Colliculus and Lateral Geniculate Nucleus of Juvenile Rats Following Prenatal Exposure to Marijuana Smoke.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to Marijuana (MJN) has been associated with various brain deficits. The main activity in marijuana, Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), crosses the placenta and affects fetal brain development. Despite this, marijuana remains a commonly abused substance among pregnant women. The current study examined the histological and biochemical changes in the Superior Colliculus (SC) and Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN) in rat brains prenatally exposed to marijuana. METHODS: Four groups of pregnant rats (n=5 rats/group) were exposed to the smoke of 10 g/kg marijuana at various

Retinal and thalamic alterations in the 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the formation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles that lead to decreased quality of life due to behavioral, motor, and cognitive impairments. Due to the widespread pathological nature of AD, many brain regions are affected by Aβ plaques including regions important for vision such as the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the thalamus which is critical for relaying signals from the retina to the primary visual cortex. Using a wide range of techniques including electrophysiological approaches, in vivo

Neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the hereditary microphthalmic rat: a Golgi study.

Neurons of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGNd) in the microphthalmic rat were examined by the Golgi-Cox method. LGNd neurons in the microphthalmic rat were classified into the multipolar (I) and bipolar (II) types as in the normal rat. The multipolar type was further divided into two subclasses (Ia and Ib) on the basis of their dendritic patterns. The proximal portion of their primary dendrites was thinner than in normal LGNd neurons. The Ia cells had 6-7 primary dendrites extending radially, while the Ib cells had 3-4 primary dendrites spreading primarily parallel to the optic tract.

[Eye movement disorder in albinos (author's transl)].

Recent studies have shown misdirected optic fibres in albinotic animals to the lateral geniculate body, to the visual cortex and to the superior colliculi. Since a similar anomaly was found anatomiclly and neurophysiologically in human albinos, an oculography was performed in 10 albinos. The results were identical to those found in the so called congenital nystagmus. It remains doubtful that the misdirection is an explanation for the nystagmus in albinotic humans.

[A Role of the Basal Ganglia in Processing of Complex Sounds and Auditory Attention].

A hypothetical mechanism is suggested for processing of complex sounds and auditory attention in parallel neuronal loops including various auditory cortical areas connected with parts of the medial geniculate body, inferior colliculus and basal ganglia. Release of dopamine in the striatum promotes bidirectional modulation of strong and weak inputs from the neocortex to striatal neurons giving rise to direct and indirect pathways through the basal ganglia. Subsequent synergistic disinhibition of one and inhibition of other groups of thalamic neurons by the basal ganglia result in the creation o

The syndrome of posterior choroidal artery territory infarction.

Posterior choroidal artery (PChA) territory infarcts remain the least well-known type of thalamic infarcts. Our study of 10 personal cases, selected from 2,925 stroke patients admitted consecutively to a community-based primary care center, and 10 published cases of unilateral PChA territory infarct suggests that they can often be differentiated clinically from other thalamic infarcts. Patients with PChA territory infarct associated with superficial posterior cerebral artery territory infarct or with another infarct were excluded. Damage was characteristically limited to the lateral geniculate

Microglia induce auditory dysfunction after status epilepticus in mice.

Auditory dysfunction and increased neuronal activity in the auditory pathways have been reported in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, but the cellular mechanisms involved are unknown. Here, we report that microglia play a role in the disinhibition of auditory pathways after status epilepticus in mice. We found that neuronal activity in the auditory pathways, including the primary auditory cortex and the medial geniculate body (MGB), was increased and auditory discrimination was impaired after status epilepticus. We further demonstrated that microglia reduced inhibitory synapses on MGB rela
