Instruction-induced modulation of the visual stream during gesture observation.

Although gesture observation tasks are believed to invariably activate the action-observation network (AON), we investigated whether the activation of different cognitive mechanisms when processing identical stimuli with different explicit instructions modulates AON activations. Accordingly, 24 healthy right-handed individuals observed gestures and they processed both the actor's moved hand (hand laterality judgment task, HT) and the meaning of the actor's gesture (meaning task, MT). The main brain-level result was that the HT (vs MT) differentially activated the left and right precuneus, the …

Gesture encoding in human left precentral gyrus neuronal ensembles.

Understanding the cortical activity patterns driving dexterous upper limb motion has the potential to benefit a broad clinical population living with limited mobility through the development of novel brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. The present study examines the activity of ensembles of motor cortical neurons recorded using microelectrode arrays in the dominant hemisphere of two BrainGate clinical trial participants with cervical spinal cord injury as they attempted to perform a set of 48 different hand gestures. Although each participant displayed a unique organization of their res…

Hand Gesture Recognition Using Ultrasonic Array with Machine Learning.

In the field of gesture recognition technology, accurately detecting human gestures is crucial. In this research, ultrasonic transducers were utilized for gesture recognition. Due to the wide beamwidth of ultrasonic transducers, it is difficult to effectively distinguish between multiple objects within a single beam. However, they are effective at accurately identifying individual objects. To leverage this characteristic of the ultrasonic transducer as an advantage, this research involved constructing an ultrasonic array. This array was created by arranging eight transmitting transducers in a …

The Roles of Gestural and Symbolic Schematizations in Inhibition as a Component of Executive Functions.

The role of gestural schematization in enhancing thinking processes has been the subject of a large body of works. In this process, contextually unimportant or irrelevant information related to a concept (or a system of concepts) is deleted or ignored, while relevant spatial information is maintained. This process is a special type of inhibition, which is one of the key components of executive functions. In this short paper, it is suggested that gestural schematization is a special type of symbolic schematization, a much more general process through which irrelevant information related to feat

Gesture imitation with lower limbs following left hemisphere stroke.

Ideomotor apraxia (IMA) of lower limbs has rarely been investigated systematically. This is the aim of the current study. Thirty-five patients with a unilateral stroke in the left hemisphere were tested within 30 days from onset with an upper limb IMA test and with a newly devised test assessing leg IMA. Seventeen patients presented with arm apraxia, six of them also showed severe leg apraxia. Results suggest that IMA of lower limbs emerges in association with severe arm IMA in patients with large lesions, and is a sign of general severity of the patient's conditions.

Left inferior parietal dominance in gesture imitation: an fMRI study.

The inability to imitate gestures is an essential feature of apraxia. However, discrepancies exist between clinical studies in apraxic patients and neuroimaging findings on imitation. We therefore aimed to investigate: (1) which areas are recruited during imitation under conditions similar to clinical tests for apraxic deficits; (2) whether there are common lateralized areas subserving imitation irrespective of the acting limb side; and also (3) whether there are differences between hand and finger gestures. We used fMRI in 12 healthy, right handed subjects to investigate the imitation of four…

From rhythms to meaning: Longitudinal evidence on multimodal precursors of early gestures and language development.

Gesture and speech are integrated in adult communication, and growing evidence suggests that their coordination begins early in infancy. However, the developmental processes through which motor and vocal behaviors evolve into communicative acts remain insufficiently understood. This longitudinal study examines the frequency and developmental trajectories of spontaneous movements, rhythmic movements, and gestures-produced both independently and in coordination with vocalizations- during naturalistic triadic interactions (adult-infant-object). Nine infants (2-12 months) were observed monthly and…

Hierarchical Classification of EMG Signal for Hand and Wrist Gestures and Forces in Myoelectric Control.

The loss of an upper limb significantly affects daily activities, making advanced prosthesis control crucial for improving the quality of life. Pattern recognition applied to electromyographic signals has emerged as a leading solution for controlling prosthetic hands; yet, most studies focus solely on steady-state muscle activity, neglecting the transient phase of contraction, thereby limiting real-world applicability. To address this limitation, this study introduces a hierarchical approach that combines an Onset Detection Algorithm, a 9-class steady-state gesture classifier, and a three-leve

Distinct Contributions of Dorsal and Ventral Streams to Imitation of Tool-Use and Communicative Gestures.

Imitation of tool-use gestures (transitive; e.g., hammering) and communicative emblems (intransitive; e.g., waving goodbye) is frequently impaired after left-hemispheric lesions. We aimed 1) to identify lesions related to deficient transitive or intransitive gestures, 2) to delineate regions associated with distinct error types (e.g., hand configuration, kinematics), and 3) to compare imitation to previous data on pantomimed and actual tool use. Of note, 156 patients (64.3 ± 14.6 years; 56 female) with first-ever left-hemispheric ischemic stroke were prospectively examined 4.8 ± 2.0 days after…

Classification of Phantom Finger, Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Voluntary Gestures in Transhumeral Amputees With sEMG.

Decoding finger and hand movements from sEMG electrodes placed on the forearm of transradial amputees has been commonly studied by many research groups. A few recent studies have shown an interesting phenomenon: simple correlations between distal phantom finger, hand and wrist voluntary movements and muscle activity in the residual upper arm in transhumeral amputees, i.e., of muscle groups that, prior to amputation, had no physical effect on the concerned hand and wrist joints. In this study, we are going further into the exploration of this phenomenon by setting up an evaluation study of phan

Brief report: imitation of meaningless gestures in individuals with Asperger syndrome and High-Functioning Autism.

Nineteen people with Asperger syndrome (AS)/High-Functioning Autism (HFA) (ages 7-15) were tested on imitation of two types of meaningless gesture: hand postures and finger positions. The individuals with AS/HFA achieved lower scores in the imitation of both hand and finger positions relative to a matched neurotypical group. The between-group difference was primarily accounted for by performance on a test of visual motor integration, together with a hand imitation deficit which was specifically due to errors in body part orientation. Our findings implicate both visuomotor processes (Damasio an

Oringano: Shared Ring-Based Gestures for Controlling Internet of Things Devices in a Smart Home.

Smart rings are emerging as a promising class of sensing devices that enable unobtrusive, always-available interaction with Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems. These wearable devices support intuitive gesture-based control while minimizing user attention and preserving mobility. However, despite rapid advances in sensing hardware and gesture recognition algorithms, little is known about how users associate ring-based shared gestures with smart-home commands. To fill this gap, this paper presents Oringano, a framework for designing and evaluating a vocabulary of shared ring-based gestures for …

The neural bases of meaningful intransitive gestures: A meta-analysis of lesion and fMRI studies.

Meaningful intransitive (MFI) gestures have long been used by clinicians and researchers to assess gesture production and recognition, especially in the context of neuropsychological disorders like apraxia. Their neural bases, however, remain unclear. The goal of this systematic, theory-driven meta-analysis of 6 lesion studies and 21 fMRI studies was to investigate the cerebral networks of MFI gestures. The results suggested that MFI gesture processing depends on a large, left-lateralized, cortico-subcortical, fronto-temporo-insular and cerebellar neural network also involved in social cogniti…

Hierarchical strategy for sEMG classification of the hand/wrist gestures and forces of transradial amputees.

INTRODUCTION: The myoelectric control strategy, based on surface electromyographic signals, has long been used for controlling a prosthetic system with multiple degrees of freedom. Several methods classify gestures and force levels but the simultaneous real-time control of hand/wrist gestures and force levels did not yet reach a satisfactory level of effectiveness. METHODS: In this work, the hierarchical classification approach, already validated on 31 healthy subjects, was adapted for the real-time control of a multi-DoFs prosthetic system on 15 trans-radial amputees. The effectiveness of th…

Enabling New Articulatory Gestures in Children With Persistent Speech Sound Disorders Using Ultrasound Visual Biofeedback.

Purpose This study evaluated ultrasound visual biofeedback treatment for teaching new articulations to children with a wide variety of speech sound disorders. It was hypothesized that motor-based intervention incorporating ultrasound would lead to rapid acquisition of a range of target lingual gestures with generalization to untreated words. Method Twenty children aged 6-15 years with a range of mild to severe speech disorders affecting a variety of lingual targets enrolled in a case series with replication. Of these, 15 children completed the intervention. All of the children presented with a…
