Concomitant Gilbert's syndrome and thalassemia trait.

A 23 years old male presented with fluctuating jaundice since age of five years. He was diagnosed to have thalassemia trait along with Gilbert's syndrome. He had disproportionately higher bilirubin concentration for either disorder alone. The importance of the concomitance of these disorders is highlighted.

Postoperative hyperbilirubinemia and Gilbert's syndrome in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

We report a series of seven patients with Gilbert's syndrome undergoing cardiac surgery. Early and transient increase of total, direct, and indirect bilirubin without other complications was observed. Although this is a benign process, we believe that this disease should be routinely included in the differential diagnosis of postoperative jaundice after cardiopulmonary bypass.

Relation between Neonatal Icter and Gilbert Syndrome in Gloucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficient Subjects.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The pathogenesis of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia hasn't been completely defined in Gloucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficient newborns. The aim of this study was to detect the relationship between Gilbert's syndrome and hyperbilirubinemia in Gloucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficient neonates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This case-control study was conducted in Amirkola pediatrics teaching hospital, Babol, Iran. A total number of one hundred four infants were included in the study (51 infants with neonatal jaundice and Gloucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD)

Coexistence of Gilbert syndrome with hereditary haemolytic anaemias.

BACKGROUND: Gilbert syndrome is an inherited disease characterised by mild unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia caused by mutations in UGT1A1 gene which lead to decreased activity of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1. The most frequent genetic defect is a homozygous TA dinucleotide insertion in the regulatory TATA box in the UGT1A1 gene promoter. METHODS AND RESULTS: 182 Polish healthy individuals and 256 patients with different types of hereditary haemolytic anaemias were examined for the A(TA)(n)TAA motif. PCR was performed using sense primer labelled by 6-Fam and capillary electrophoresis was ca

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia and a common mutation of the bilirubin uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase gene in Japanese.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, which is prevalent among Asian peoples, has been considered as a physiological phenomenon, and its metabolic basis has not been clearly explained. Gilbert syndrome is a common inherited disease of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia due to decreased bilirubin uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransferase (B-UGT), and its role in neonatal jaundice has recently been considered. We have previously reported that the Gly71Arg mutation of the B-UGT gene associated with Gilbert syndrome is prevalent in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese populations and was more frequently detected i

Gilbert's syndrome: an overview for clinical biochemists.

Gilbert's syndrome (GS) is a benign and inherited state characterized by mild, lifelong, unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia in the absence of haemolysis or evidence of liver disease. Its molecular basis, mutations in the TATA box upstream of the uridine diphosphoglucose glucuronyltransferase gene, leads to impaired bilirubin glucuronidation. This synopsis outlines the pathophysiology and investigation appropriate for this innocent anomaly.

Balanoposthitis, dyspareunia, and treponema in the critically endangered Gilbert's potoroo (Potorous gilbertii).

The Gilbert's potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) is one of Australia's most critically endangered mammals with a current estimated population of 70 individuals. Both the wild and captive populations have a long history of balanoposthitis with associated crusting, ulceration, and preputial discharge. We sought to identify the microbial species found in the discharge, determine their significance in causing balanoposthitis, and correlate these findings with reproductive success and survivorship. Bacteriologic examination revealed the discharge to be a polymicrobial infection involving Treponema spp.,

[Hyperbilirubinemia in liver diseases].

Jaundice is often the first and sometimes the only symptom of liver disease. Besides in parenchymal liver disease jaundice is also observed in chronic non-haemolytic hyperbilirubinemias (Crigler-Najjar type I and II, Gilbert's syndrome) and in hereditary conjugated hyperbilirubinaemias (Dubin-Johnson- and Rotor-syndrome). A specific therapy is only available for Crigler-Najjar type II which is treated with phenobarbitone.

Decreased oxidation susceptibility of plasma low density lipoproteins in patients with Gilbert's syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The association of hyperbilirubinemia in Gilbert's syndrome (GS) with a decrease in prevalence of coronary artery disease is a well-known phenomenon. In this study, the state of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation which has been postulated to be a significant determinant at the etiopathogenesis of atherosclerotic disorders was investigated among individuals with GS. METHODS: For this purpose, serum cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid, apolipoprotein A and B, bilirubins, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, an

Estimation of hepatic bilirubin UDP-glucuronyl transferase in patients with noncirrhotic portal fibrosis and liver disease: Significance and limitations.

Using a micromethod, hepatic bilirubin UDP-glucuronyl transferase has been assayed in percutaneous needle biopsy samples obtained from patients with infectious hepatitis, postnecrotic cirrhosis, Gilbert's disease, noncirrhotic portal fibrosis (NCPF), granuloma of the liver, and extrahepatic portal vein obstruction. The results were compared with those obtained from 10 control subjects. Patients with cirrhosis and infectious hepatitis revealed normal bilirubin transferase levels, whereas those with Gilbert's disease showed significantly low enzyme levels. Many patients with NCPF, some with extr

Bone scintigraphy in Ollier's disease: A rare case report.

Ollier's disease is characterized by multiple skeletal enchondroma. There are published data regarding Ollier's disease being associated with vascular malformations and non-skeletal neoplasms. We report a case of Ollier's disease in a young male associated with osteochondroma, low grade glioma in the insular cortex of brain and Gilbert's syndrome. Technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate whole body bone scan is a sensitive investigation to ascertain the complete extent of skeletal involvement particularly the asymptomatic sites.

Bilirubin Decreases Macrophage Cholesterol Efflux and ATP-Binding Cassette Transporter A1 Protein Expression.

BACKGROUND: Mild but chronically elevated circulating unconjugated bilirubin is associated with reduced total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration, which is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk. We aimed to investigate whether unconjugated bilirubin influences macrophage cholesterol efflux, as a potential mechanism for the altered circulating lipoprotein concentrations observed in hyperbilirubinemic individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cholesterol efflux from THP-1 macrophages was assessed using plasma obtained from normo- and hyperbilirubinemic (Gilbert syndrome)
