Characterization of angiotensin I-converting enzyme from anterior gills of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus.

Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) is a well-known metallopeptidase that is found in vertebrates, invertebrates and bacteria. We isolated from the anterior gill of the crab Ucides cordatus an isoform of ACE, here named crab-ACE, which presented catalytic properties closely resembling to those of mammalian ACE. The enzyme was purified on Sepharose-lisinopril affinity chromatography to apparent homogeneity and a band of about 72 kDa could be visualized after silver staining and Western blotting. Assays performed with fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) selective ACE substrates Abz-F

Hooked on fish blood: the reliance of a gill parasite on haematophagy.

Parasitism involves diverse evolutionary strategies, including adaptations for blood feeding, which provides essential nutrients for growth and reproduction. Sparicotyle chrysophrii (Polyopisthocotyla: Microcotylidae), an ectoparasitic flatworm, infects the gills of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), significantly affecting fish health, welfare and Mediterranean cage farm profitability. Despite its impact, limited information exists on its feeding behaviour. This study demonstrates the presence of blood and exogenous haem groups in S. chrysophrii and explores its digestive tract using light an…

Irritability symptoms in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Behavioral symptoms are known to be a prominent feature of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), although little is known about irritability in this patient population. This study investigated the clinical correlates of irritability symptoms in 101 adult patients with GTS. We found that patients with more severe tics (especially vocal tics) report higher levels of irritability (r=0.37, p <0.001) Furthermore, irritability levels appear to be higher in those patients with comorbid attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, in whom poor impulse control is common. These findings prompt further

The psychopathological spectrum of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) holds a unique status as quintessentially neuropsychiatric condition at the interface between neurology (movement disorder) and psychiatry (behavioural condition). This is a reflection of the common observation that the vast majority of patients present with behavioural problems in association with the motor and vocal tics which define GTS. The present article focuses on the relationship between GTS and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), affective disorders (both major depression and bipolar affective d

Pharmacological treatment of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Pharmacological treatment is usually indicated in moderate to severe tics in psychosocial and/or functional impairment. Neuroleptics with D2 antagonistic activity remain the cornerstone of anti-tic therapy. Lack of randomized controlled clinical trials base therapeutic decisions mainly on clinical expertise and common sense. Recently, aripiprazole has emerged as the neuroleptic with the most advantageous efficacy/side effect ratio for treating tics. Yet, in non-responders to aripiprazole, many neuroleptic and non-neuroleptic drugs, including botulinum toxin injections, are available and often

The Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: the current status.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterised by multiple motor and one or more vocal/phonic tics. GTS was once thought to be rare, but many relatively recent studies suggest that the prevalence is about 1% of the worldwide community, apart from in Sub-Saharan Black Africa. Comorbidity and coexistent psychopathology are common, occurring in about 90% of clinical cohorts and individuals in the community. The most common comorbidities are attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive behaviours, and disorder, and autistic spectrum disorders, while the most common coexist

Gilles de la Tourette: the man behind the syndrome.

French neuropsychiatrist Georges Gilles de la Tourette first described in 1885 the "Maladie des Tics" which earned him eponymous fame. Both his colleagues at La Salpêtrière hospital in Paris and medical historians report that he was a highly intelligent, if irascible, character. The Gilles de la Tourette syndrome was only a very minor contribution of its author, at the time. Gilles de la Tourette's main and continued contributions were on hysteria and hypnotism. This article concentrates on his life and includes previously untranslated passages from authors of the time and, for the first time,

Famous people with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome?

Virtually no neurologist nor psychiatrist today can be unaware of the diagnosis of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). Although the eponymous description by Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette was published in 1885, familiarity with this syndrome has been achieved only recently. In this article, the two most renown accounts of exceptional individuals retrospectively diagnosed with GTS are critically analyzed: British lexicographer Samuel Johnson and Austrian musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In both cases, clinical descriptions have been retrieved from written documents predating Gilles de la

Hydrogen sulfide as an oxygen sensor in trout gill chemoreceptors.

Olfactory information is processed by a diverse group of interconnected forebrain regions. Most efforts to define the cellular mechanisms involved in processing olfactory information have been focused on understanding the function of the olfactory bulb, the primary second-order olfactory region, and its principal target, the piriform cortex. However, the olfactory bulb also projects to other targets, including the rarely studied olfactory tubercle, a ventral brain region recently implicated in regulating cocaine-related reward behavior. We used whole cell patch-clamp recordings from rat tuberc

Catatonic signs in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia describes the clustering of specific movement and behavioral abnormalities of both the hypokinetic and hyperkinetic nature. Originally described in association with schizophrenia, catatonic signs have been reported in a wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions. AIM: In this study, we examined the phenomenologic expression and significance of catatonic signs in a nonpsychotic patient group, 55 adults with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). METHODS: The Bush-Francis Catatonia Rating Scale (BFCRS) and standardized psychometric instruments were used to assess the presen

An update on the genetics of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To summarize the current data suggesting that Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is inherited and genetic. METHODS: The extant literature on family studies, segregation analyses, candidate genes studies and linkage studies of GTS was reviewed and summarized. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: There is considerable data that suggests that: (1). genetic factors play an important role in the manifestation of GTS; (2). several genes are important with some possibly having major effect; and (3). several regions of the genome have been identified as potential locations of these susceptibility

Gill epithelial cells as in vitro models in aquatic toxicology.

Gill epithelial cells are less sensitive than fish for most test chemicals, but a high correlation and a slope of the regression line close to 1 support the use of gill epithelial cells for prediction of acute toxicity in fish. Cells in suspension perform as well as cultured cells in the toxicity tests. However, the use of cells in suspension results in a quicker and more cost-effective assay for toxicity screening, but the cells should be used within about 5 hours of isolation. If a longer incubation time is required, cultured cells should be used. Cultured cells re-establish their polarity a

[Disorders associated with the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Diagnostic criteria of the Gilles de la Tourette syndrome hasn't changed in many years. Lately, associated symptoms have became very important. In this study, we want to stress the relationship between precocious diagnostic criteria, proposed by us, and the associated symptomatology, specially the obsessive-compulsive disorder. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have studied 30 patients with the diagnosis of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome with associated obsessive-compulsive disorder by means of our criteria, evaluating their fiability when confronted to the Shapiro et al an

Directed attention in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) is a basal ganglia (BG) disorder, associated not only with hyperkinetic movements but also with attentional impairments. This experiment sought to ascertain whether overt direct visual attention would influence tactile attentional performance in TS, via the use of a vibrotactile choice reaction time procedure involving biased probabilities of event occurrence. Participants were required to look (i.e., direct gaze) either at the hand receiving the most (expected) vibrations, or the hand less often stimulated (the unexpected), for both crossed and uncrossed ar
