Forty-seven patients with local recession of the gingiva of different etiology were treated by surgery with and without colapol. Clinical examinations and the findings of rheoparodontography and polarography indicate a high efficacy of the suggested treatment making use of a composite material on the base of hydroxyapatite.

Gingival mucus in an older patient is the site of the slowing-down of the cellular turnover, of a lessening of metabolic activity and of keratinisation. The resistance to mechanical attacks and bacteria lessens thus its potential for repair. Thus one notes a worsening state of parodontal complaints during old age. By means of a study carried out at the Clinique de Parodontie of the Institut d'Odonto-Stomatologie in Dakar, we propose to attempt to see if the presence of gingival retraction can be linked with parodontal senescence by means of observing 318 patients.

Gingival recession leading to exposure of crown margins or extensive areas of the tooth root can cause significant aesthetic difficulties. Surgical innovations over the last decade have enabled the periodontist to correct such problems with greater predictability and improved aesthetics. The current surgical procedures for treatment of gingival recession are described and illustrated, and criteria for selection of the appropriate procedure are presented. The learning objective of this article is a review of the surgical procedures and an increased predictability in implementation.

Free gingival grafts can be utilized, alone or in combination with a coronally positioned flap, for the prevention and the treatment of gingival recession. The graft can be placed directly on the denuded root, as first described by Sullivan & Atkins (1968). Gingival recession is a common finding in many patients. Some patients will not be concerned whereas others will have aesthetic concerns or complain of sensitivity. This paper highlights the aetiology of gingival recession, the treatment options available to treat any associated sensitivity and the non-surgical treatment options available to restore aesthetics in patients with gingival recession. Subsequent papers in this series discuss the surgical treatment options available to correct localised recession defects.

This paper is the second in a three part series looking at the aetiology and management of gingival recession. Part one discussed the aetiology and non-surgical management and this part aims to discuss the use of pedicle soft tissue grafts in the treatment of gingival recession. This article also considers the factors affecting the outcome of surgical procedures used to treat localised recession defects. The third paper in this series will consider the use of free soft tissue grafts and guided tissue regeneration.
