Permeability of gingival sulcular epithelium in the development of scorbutic gingivitis.

Young adult nonhuman primates were initially fed an ascorbic-acid free diet and, subsequently, a diet with a suboptimal level of the vitamin. Following approximately 12 weeks of this dietary regime, five of seven experimental animals of the gingival sulcular epithelium to 3H-inulin, but not to 14C-butyric acid or 14C-urea, had increased significantly (+86%, P less than 0.01) in the experimental group as compared to ad libitum or pair-fed controls. This defect in the intercellular permeability barrier of the sulcular epithelium could have contributed to the pathogenesis of scorbutic gingivitis.

Correlation between Gingival Thickness and Occurrence of Gingival Recession.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession (GR) has become a common problem among patients. GR is associated with increased accumulation of plaque, root caries, abrasion and cervical wear, and dentinal hypersensitivity. The present study aimed to examine the correlation between gingival biotypes and the occurrence of GR. METHODS: The study initially recruited 94 subjects; however, 54 of them did not have any recession sites, and hence were discarded. Therefore, the analysis was performed on 40 subjects. The study particularly compared the relationship between the recession length (RL) and width along wit

Gingival veneer: a novel technique of masking gingival recession.

One of the most distressing aspects of periodontitis is the unesthetic appearance of maxillary and mandibular anteriors. The elongation of the crowns due to root exposure and increased interdental spacing results in unesthetic appearance. Surgical procedures for gingival recession coverage do not have acceptable results in cases of severe gingival recession. So nonsurgical methods like gingival veneers should be considered as a treatment modality in such cases. This article aims to revisit the gingival veneer: its uses, advantages, disadvantages, and its fabrication. The case discussed here hi

Correlation between gingival thickness and gingival recession in humans.

Gingival recession is characterized by the apical migration of the gingival margin, exposing the root surface. Studies have demonstrated several etiological factors for gingival recession such as periodontitis, traumatic toothbrushing, use of oral piercing, and past orthodontic therapy, among others. It might not be possible to identify and quantify the influence of each factor, and gingival recession at some sites may be the result of the combination of these factors. Gingival recession affects individuals at all ages, with prevalence increasing as time passes. The aim of this study was to ob

Effect of gingivitis on azithromycin concentrations in gingival crevicular fluid.

BACKGROUND: Macrolide antibiotics yield high concentrations in inflamed tissue, suggesting that their levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) could be increased at gingivitis sites. However, the increased volume of GCF associated with gingivitis could potentially dilute macrolides. To determine whether these assumptions are correct, the bioavailability of systemically administered azithromycin was compared in GCF from healthy and gingivitis sites. METHODS: Experimental gingivitis was induced in one maxillary posterior sextant in nine healthy individuals. Contralateral healthy sextants serve…

Strawberry gingivitis: A diagnostic feature of gingival Wegener's granulomatosis!

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is an immunologically mediated inflammatory disease characterized by granulomatous vasculitis of the upper and … amine the oral cavity, should be familiar with the typical appearance of gingival WG as "strawberry gingivitis," its clinical course as well as diagnostic parameters and adequate management. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of WG manifesting as "strawberry gingivitis" in the Indian population.

Alteration of gingival dimensions in a complicated case of gingival recession.

This case report describes possible etiology, treatment, and 2-year outcome of a complicated case of gingival recession in the mandibular anterior dentition. Deep, cleftlike Miller Class I and II recessions at both mandibular canines and all incisors were treated using subperiosteal connective tissue grafts and coronally repositioned flaps. During surgery it was noted that the facial aspects of the roots had lost bone near the apex. After surgery profound alterations of gingival dimension occurred. Mean gingival thickness increased from 0.87 +/- 0.20 mm to 258 +/- 0.65 mm, and width of keratin

[The relationship of gingival insertion and inflammation with gingival recession in children].

Paper presents a study on 115 children, aged 5 to 15, to determine existing relationship between degree of inflammation and amount of gum insertion, with gingival recession. The study included true and false recession.

Comparison of Free Gingival Graft and Gingival Unit Graft for Treatment of Gingival Recession: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

The aim of this study was to compare the use of gingival unit graft (GUG) with free gingival graft (FGG) for treating wide gingival recession and increasing keratinized tissue. This randomized controlled trial with a split-mouth design included 30 localized bilateral recessions (Miller Classes I and II) that were randomly treated with GUG or FGG. Both grafts were fixed by cyanoacrylate glue. Probing depth, clinical attachment level, vertical recession depth, and keratinized tissue width were recorded at baseline and 1 and 6 months after surgery. The postoperative mean percentage of root covera

Gingival fibromatosis.

Presented in this paper is a clinico-pathological report of 11 cases of gingival fibromatosis. Of the 11 patients in our series, 2 cases (18.2%) with family history began to have symptom from age of 3, which is manifested by the involvement of whole gum. 9 patients (81.8%), for which the etiology was unknown, had onset of the disease at the periods of deciduous dentition, mixed dentition or permanent dentition, with localized or overall involvement of gingiva. The disease is characterized by diffuse or localized proliferation of gum. Microscopically, the proliferating gum tissue revealed well-

Gingival fenestration.

A pathologic entity, the gingival fenestration, has been described. The lesion is seen infrequently in clinical practice, probably due to the short time span of its existence and the lack of acute symptoms. It is possible that it occurs with greater frequency than generally realized. A hypothesis is presented as to the method of formation of the gingival fenestration and it is suggested that the area should be treated as gingival recession extending to the apical border of the fenestration.

Wegener Granulomatosis With Strawberry Gingivitis Mimicking Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Wegener granulomatosis (WG) is an autoimmune disease characterized by necrotizing granulomatous inflammation primarily affecting the respiratory tract and kidneys. Although head and neck involvement is common, oral manifestations presenting as strawberry gingivitis are rare and have seldom been reported as the initial presentation of WG. We report the case of a 17-year-old female who presented with recurrent gingival hyperplasia, initially misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma based on histopathologic findings. However, imaging studies revealed no evidence of malignancy, prompting further di…

Diagnostic Delay in Desquamative Gingivitis: An Observational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: Non-plaque-induced gingivitis encompasses a heterogeneous group of conditions as defined in the 2017 Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. Recognition is challenging and often leads to diagnostic delay. This study aimed to evaluate diagnostic delay in a cohort of patients with non-plaque-induced gingivitis presenting as desquamative gingivitis, and to identify associated factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this observational study, patients were recruited from public and private oral medicine centres. Participants completed a questionnaire collecti…

The Role of Inflammatory Clusters in Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Individual variability determines host responses and disease progression. Inflammatory clusters (ICs) have been shown to influence host responses against bacterial challenges during the induction of human experimental gingivitis. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the role of ICs in naturally occurring gingivitis and periodontitis. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional and split-mouth design, this study evaluated the immune regulation and tissue-remolding responses in sites with different disease severity of periodontal diseases to provide a comprehensive assessment of disease…
