A Hybrid Giza Pyramids Construction-Crow Search Algorithm-Particle Swarm Optimization (HGPC-CSA-PSO) Framework for Simulating Dynamic Collaborative Grouping in Interpreting Education: A Simulation-Based Exploratory Study.

This simulation-based exploratory study examines HGPC-CSA-PSO, a hybrid biomimetic optimization framework integrating the Giza Pyramids Construction Algorithm (GPC), Crow Search Algorithm (CSA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for dynamic collaborative grouping in interpreting education. The educational scenario and initialization values are modeling assumptions; no classroom intervention, causal teaching experiment, or independently auditable empirical validation is reported. The scalar proficiency index Qi is used as an education-oriented evaluation-layer measure, whereas the checked-i

Leaning Into Termination: New Ideas in Modern Group Analysis.

This paper was originally a panel presentation at AGPA Connect, the annual meeting of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, held in March 2025. The author briefly reviews modern analytic myths about therapeutic terminations that may evoke feelings of failure in group leaders and impede their ability to work collaboratively with themselves and group members. These myths can interfere with making terminations a constructive and progressive experience. Three personal and clinical examples are offered to illustrate how the blending of the leader's personal and professional life deepened em

Processes versus outcomes in explaining (in)equality.

I agree with many elements of the target article. My concerns focus on criticisms of outcome-based approaches to (in)equality and insufficient attention to factors constraining processes favoring egalitarianism. Understanding outcomes is of great importance. We often want to know how unequal societies are and why egalitarian-favoring processes vary in effectiveness across both small-scale societies and as the social scale increases.

Egalitarian mechanisms without egalitarian societies.

The authors' process-based framework, while analytically compelling, undermines the case for retaining society-level classifications. If egalitarian mechanisms are modular and domain-specific, they operate within nominally hierarchical societies as readily as egalitarian ones. Within-society structure is likely the more useful unit of analysis for understanding how leveling dynamics operate. The authors' definition remains underspecified. Abandoning the society-level label sharpens the framework.

Social tinkering as a complex dynamical system.

We reframe social tinkering from the perspective of complex dynamical systems. The progression between stages of cultural complexity reflects phase transitions in which new innovations develop in clusters of interconnected people, separated in social space from clusters that resist the new. Complete transition is rare; systems instead stabilize in semi-stable states representing a mix of the old and the new.

Team-on-team negotiation: How internal structure shapes what teams can do at the table.

Team negotiation research presents a paradox: teams sometimes achieve more integrative outcomes than solo negotiators, yet in other cases they escalate competitiveness and harm relational outcomes. Existing theory has not resolved this inconsistency, in part because it treats negotiating teams as if they could change positions as easily as individual negotiators. We argue this assumption overlooks a central constraint of team-on-team negotiation: before any adaptive external exchange can occur, teams must internally authorize revisions to their positions as new information emerges. Drawing on

Optimising a culture of learning with peer-led small group learning sessions.

BACKGROUND: The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) delivers the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program. This includes an out-of-practice education program predominantly involving small group learning sessions (SGLs) facilitated by local medical educators. OBJECTIVE: This article explores the RACGP AGPT model's emphasis on peer-led SGLs, describing what they are and their educational benefits. DISCUSSION: Stable small groups that meet regularly enable a positive learning environment by developing strong relationships among members, sharing reflective discus

Social tinkering generates complexity, but also system-scale fragility and collective delusions.

The hypothesis that human culture emerges through deliberate, decentralized social tinkering rather than random variation is persuasive. However, the hypothesis is ambiguous about the stability of the resulting structures. Expanding scale may increase fragility and normative conflict, and networks of socially constructed coordination spaces may amplify imaginative disconnection from reality. Consequently, system-scale risks arise that exceed the grasp of governable tinkering.

A role for self-regulatory control in the absence of ingroup preference.

One of psychology's most ubiquitous findings is that of robust ingroup preference, an explicitly stated human preference for the groups to which we belong. The advent of implicit measures of social cognition introduced a paradoxical result: Compared to members of higher-status groups, members of lower-status groups often show no implicit ingroup preference, sometimes even showing outgroup preference, a result rarely observed on explicit measures. Prevailing theories have provided macro-level accounts, often in terms of system-justifying tendencies, but the various cognitive processes that coul

Sacred values as role-constitutive norms in social groups.

Jara-Ettinger and Dunham propose that institutional cognition tracks roles and their normative expectations. I argue that decentralized roles lacking formal authority require an additional mechanism to stabilize legitimacy. Sacred values - nonnegotiable commitments that impose costly obligations - function as role-constitutive norms that signal intrinsic devotion, thereby determining legitimate role occupancy and preventing free riding on group identities.

The Use of Self-Disclosure in Group Therapy: Engaging Social Enactments in Modern Group Treatment.

This paper was originally a panel discussion at the Annual American Group Psychotherapy Association 2025 Conference. Working with enactments of social oppression in groups presents special challenges for group leaders trained to work exclusively within a developmental model. When the group attends to issues of social power, the leader can be seen not only as a transferential figure but also as a representative of an oppressive social class. This shift from developmental to social transference often stimulates anxiety in the group leader, who then struggles with this charged transference. This

Egalitarianism boosts collective intelligence.

The target article by Stibbard Hawkes and von Rueden (SHVR) provides useful terminological housekeeping, but its individualistic account of egalitarianism in small-scale societies risks overlooking important group-level functions. We argue that egalitarian norms are not merely by-products of individual strategies but actively sustain cooperation, coordination, and collective decision-making, enhancing group stability and collective intelligence. A full account of egalitarianism must integrate both individual-level processes and emergent group-level outcomes. Egalitarianism not only constrains

Synchrony and Task Engagement in Virtual Reality: Temporal Dynamics, Predictors, and Psychological Outcomes of Collaborative Behaviors.

Collaborative behaviors provide useful signals for understanding how minds align through perception and actions. Virtual reality (VR) is a useful tool for studying these behaviors, as it enables fine-grained measurements of coordination in virtual social settings. In this work, we investigate collaborative behaviors in a large-scale classroom VR dataset of space-building activities (N = 146), focusing on dyadic synchrony and individual task engagement during the collaborative group activity. An analysis of collaborative behaviors over time revealed a U-shaped pattern in head and hand synchrony

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy assessment of the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with transcranial magnetic stimulation on dynamic functional networks in patients with chronic insomnia: randomised, double-blind, parallel-group, controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is more effective than either modality alone. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of combined tDCS-rTMS on cortical functional networks and neural regulation processes in chronic insomnia. METHODS: In this randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled trial, 111 adults with chronic insomnia were allocated to real tDCS+real rTMS or sham tDCS+real rTMS. Participants received 20 weekday sessions ov

Re-imagining space: Conceptualizing new psychological interventions against segregationist attitudes and behaviours.

Drawing on theories, concepts and empirical evidence from the fields of human geography, social and environmental psychology, this paper argues for space-based interventions as new psychological interventions aiming to address segregationist attitudes and behaviours among co-located groups. The main premise of this argument is that engaging in spatial experiences that cause people to challenge their existing notions of place will impact socio-spatial processes that propagate segregationist practices. These processes concern how people view and attach to their place and how they regard antagoni

SMEs as Agents of Social Cohesion: Opportunities, Challenges, and Conceptual Framework.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are widely acknowledged as key contributors to inclusive and sustainable development. However, their role as agents of social cohesion remains conceptually fragmented and insufficiently developed. This paper addresses this gap by proposing an integrated conceptual framework explaining how SMEs foster social cohesion through local embeddedness, employment practices, and stakeholder engagement. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives from entrepreneurship, social capital, and corporate social responsibility, the study identifies key opportunities, including

Egalitarianism is not equality: Extending process-based approaches through culture, identity, and power.

This commentary supports the shift from outcome-based to process-based understandings of egalitarianism. However, it argues that focusing on intragroup mechanisms alone is insufficient. Drawing on social identity theory, cultural orientation, and structural inequality, it suggests that intergroup dynamics and broader power structures constrain egalitarian outcomes, helping explain why processes that regulate inequality rarely produce equality in more complex societies.

The differential effects of identification modes on suggestion-making behaviour.

Sharing ideas and offering suggestions for group improvement, while highly beneficial for the group, can challenge its existing order, potentially creating normative conflict. Integrating this perspective with the multidimensional approach to group identification, this research examined the distinct, even opposing, effects of different identification modes on overt suggestion-making behaviour. In two field studies (n = 599 and n = 412), we hypothesized and found that the affective mode of identification (commitment) positively predicted overt suggestion-making behaviour, whereas the normative

Utilizing Transference-Focused Psychotherapy Interventions in Group Psychotherapy for Personality Disorders.

Transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) is a modified form of psychoanalytic psychotherapy grounded in object relations theory. It was developed to treat borderline personality disorder but has been used with a broader range of personality pathology. Notable adaptations include establishing an explicit treatment contract; a grounding in the domains of work, intimacy, and creativity rather than strict free association; a more formalized structure for training and supervising therapists; and a staged approach to interpretation that focuses sequentially on the elucidation of dominant object rela

How does collective punishment work? The role of anticipated negative intragroup reactions.

Intragroup collective punishment has been a common sanctioning practice throughout history and remains prevalent in modern societies. Yet, we know little about its effectiveness and even less about the psychological processes that might explain it. Theoretical approaches that deem collective punishment effective assume that the threat of a group-level sanction promotes an internal control system. We argue that even without internal control systems, people's anticipation of negative intragroup reactions for activating collective punishment can render it effective. We present four experiments, t
