The role of telomerase in hair growth and relevant disorders: A review.

BACKGROUND: Hair diseases may present with hair loss, hirsutism, hair melanin abnormalities and other manifestations. Hair follicles are known as mini-organs that undergo periodic remodeling, and their constant regeneration in vivo reflects interesting anti-aging functions. Telomerase prevents cellular senescence by maintaining telomere length, but its excessive proliferation in cancer cells may also induce cancer. However, the effects of telomerase in hair growth have rarely been reported. METHODS: In this study, we reviewed the role of telomerase in hair growth and the effects of hair disor

Obsessive-compulsive disorder and growth factors: A comparative review.

The goal of this article is to clarify the role of various growth factors in the establishment and progression of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is a chronic mental disorder with recurrent intrusive thoughts and/or repetitive compulsive behaviors that increase during stressful periods. Growth and neurotrophic factors may be contributing factors in the pathophysiology of OCD. Many of them are synthesized and released within the central nervous system and act as trophic agents in neurons; some of them are involved in brain growth, development, neurogenesis, myelination and plasticity,

The growth and development of research on personality disorders: A bibliometric study.

This study objective was to investigate publication trends on personality disorders (PD) and to identify patterns of historical development. Publication rates were determined using the Results by Year Timeline feature of PubMed. Time series autoregressive integrated moving average models were used to analyse the publication rates for PDs in quinquennial periods beginning in 1980 and ending in 2019 and to predict the number of publications in the 2024-2029 period. More than 300 articles on antisocial and borderline PD are being published each year, and the models suggest an accelerating growth

Factitious disorder-by-proxy simulating fetal growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Although a variety of presentations have been described in the literature, the true prevalence of factitious disorder, also commonly known as Münchausen syndrome, and factitious disorder-by-proxy in pregnancy is unknown. The authors present a unique case in which intrauterine fetal growth restriction was simulated through fabrication of prenatal records. CASE: A 30-year-old woman, gravida 6 para 3113, was transferred at 38 4/7 weeks of gestation for severe fetal growth restriction. The clinic listed in the patient-provided prenatal record was contacted to obtain original ultrasono

Growth failure and sleep disordered breathing: a review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: While otolaryngologists consider growth failure an absolute indication for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A), they may not be accustomed to screening for poor growth, and thus unlikely to consider it when recommending a T&A. This paper will (a) familiarize otolaryngologists with the definition, prevalence, and etiology of growth failure and (b) review the published findings that examine the inter-relationship among sleep disordered breathing, growth failure, and adentonsillar hypertrophy in children. METHODS: This paper is divided into three sections. The first section presents

Growth hormone response to apomorphine in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Several lines of evidence suggest that dopamine plays a role in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Indeed, some trials have shown the efficacy of neuroleptic addition in the treatment of OCD patients. In this study, we assessed the growth hormone (GH) response to 0.5 mg apomorphine(sc) in 8 drug-free inpatients (6 male, 2 female; mean age +/- SD = 34.7 +/- 12.6) meeting DSM-III-R criteria for OCD without major depression and compared their responses with those of 8 healthy male volunteers (mean age = 27.1 +/- 8.5). The groups did not differ in their mean GH peak respon

Growth hormone-releasing hormone in retinal disorders and uveitis: an updated review.

Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) is a hypothalamic releasing hormone that plays a crucial physiological role in regulating the synthesis and release of anterior pituitary hormones. In recent years, studies have found that GHRH possesses functions like anti-inflammation, promoting cell proliferation, and facilitating cell migration. It participates in regulating the development of uveitis and diabetic retinopathy. Additionally, it also has an impact on the development of retinal ganglion cells by modulating the inflammatory response and mediating the immune response. Given the important

Exome Sequencing Identifies Multiple Genetic Diagnoses in Children with Syndromic Growth Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of multiple genetic diagnoses in syndromic growth disorders. STUDY DESIGN: We carried out a cross-sectional study to evaluate 115 patients with syndromic tall (n = 24) or short stature (n = 91) of unknown cause from a tertiary referral center for growth disorders. Exome sequencing was performed to assess germline single nucleotide, InDel, and copy number variants. All variants were classified according to ACMG/AMP guidelines. The main outcome measured was the frequency of multiple genetic diagnoses in a cohort of children with syndromic growth disorders. R…

Ocular congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs): insights into axon growth and guidance.

Unraveling the genetics of the paralytic strabismus syndromes known as congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs) is both informing physicians and their patients and broadening our understanding of development of the ocular motor system. Genetic mutations underlying ocular CCDDs alter either motor neuron specification or motor nerve development, and highlight the importance of modulations of cell signaling, cytoskeletal transport, and microtubule dynamics for axon growth and guidance. Here we review recent advances in our understanding of two CCDDs, congenital fibrosis of the extraocu

Disorders of childhood growth and development: failure to thrive versus short stature.

Failure to thrive (FTT) describes retarded growth in height and weight, whereas short stature (SS) involves comparison of a child or adolescent's height to that of a reference group or to his or her own height across time. To identify either condition in infants, children, and adolescents, the family physician should focus on accurate measurement of length/height and weight as well as careful plotting and assessment of the rate of linear growth and weight gain based on World Health Organization standards (from birth to 2 years) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention charts (from age 2

Hsp90 and angiogenesis in bone disorders--lessons from the avian growth plate.

Thiram-induced tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) and vitamin-D deficiency rickets are avian bone disorders of different etiologies characterized by abnormal chondrocyte differentiation, enlarged and unvascularized growth plates, and lameness. Heat-shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is a proangiogenic factor in mammalian tissues and in tumors; therefore, Hsp90 inhibitors were developed as antiangiogenic factors. In this study, we evaluated the association between Hsp90, hypoxia, and angiogenesis in the chick growth plate. Administration of the Hsp90 inhibitor to TD- and rickets-afflicted chicks at the time of

Cellular expression of growth hormone and prolactin receptors in human breast disorders.

Growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) exert their regulatory functions in the mammary gland by acting on specific receptors. Using isotopic in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, we have localized the expression of hGH receptor (hGHR) and hPRL receptor (hPRLR) in a panel of human breast disorders. Surgical specimens from adult females included normal breast, inflammatory lesions (mastitis) benign proliferative breast disease (fibroadenoma, papilloma, adenosis, epitheliosis), intraductal carcinoma or lobular carcinoma in situ, and invasive ductal, lobular or medullary carcinoma. Case

Cognitive effects of growth hormone following traumatic brain injury and other disorders.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability, with a significant percentage of patients experiencing pituitary dysfunction, including growth hormone (GH) deficiency. This manuscript examines the cognitive consequences of GH deficiency following TBI and other disorders and its implications for treatment. Despite advancements in understanding the cognitive impairments resulting from TBI-predominantly affecting memory, executive function, and processing speed-current interventions remain limited. Research indicates that GH deficiency, prevalent in 15-26% of TBI patients
