Etiology of halitosis in pediatric dentistry.

Halitosis has become a major concern, as it is the third most common reason for dental visits and affects individuals across all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Only a few limited studies have explored the prevalence and etiology of halitosis in the pediatric population. Therefore, the aim of this review was to identify the etiological factors influencing the widespread occurrence of halitosis in pediatric dentistry in order to guide therapy based on the identified causes, thereby improving children's quality of life. The etiology of halitosis is multifactorial; however, in most cases, halitos…

Effect of Chlorhexidine and Probiotics on Halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of chemical method of oral hygiene practice, chlorhexidine (CHX) disinfection, and the followed consumption of probiotics on oral malodor in children. The effects of chemical and mechanical oral hygiene practice methods on the intensity of oral malodor were also evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Organoleptic test (OLT) scores of 2 or more of 196 children were randomly allocated to four groups: 1: Conventional oral hygiene practices (COH) including flossing and tooth brushing, 2: COH + tongue scraping (TS), 3: COH + TS + CHX, and 4

[The relation between halitosis and saliva].

Halitosis (bad breath) is caused by a number of volatiles originating, in most cases, in the oral cavity (intra-oral halitosis). These unpleasant smelling gases are volatile sulphur compounds such as hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulphide secreted as a result of bacterial metabolism. Bacteria on the tongue dorsum, as well as oral pathologies such as gingivitis and periodontitis, are the main causes of intra-oral halitosis. Saliva has a number of functions that can affect intra-oral halitosis, such as mechanical cleaning, moistening of the oral cavity and antibacterial proper…

Halitosis: a new definition and classification.

BACKGROUND: There is no universally accepted, precise definition, nor standardisation in terminology and classification of halitosis. OBJECTIVE: To propose a new definition, free from subjective descriptions (faecal, fish odour, etc), one-time sulphide detector readings and organoleptic estimation of odour levels, and excludes temporary exogenous odours (for example, from dietary sources). Some terms previously used in the literature are revised. RESULTS: A new aetiologic classification is proposed, dividing pathologic halitosis into Type 1 (oral), Type 2 (airway), Type 3 (gastroesophageal),…

Halitosis and the tonsils: a review of management.

OBJECTIVE: Halitosis secondary to pathology of the palatine tonsils is considered airway (type 2) halitosis in the etiologic classification. Reports differ as to the proportion of objective halitosis complaints that have tonsillar etiology, with some giving this figure as 3%. Due to their immunologic role, even healthy tonsils usually possess some subclinical inflammation. The tonsil crypt system is also the most ideal environment for anaerobic bacterial activity in the upper respiratory tract. Tonsillar halitosis is thought to occur mainly because of chronic caseous tonsillitis and tonsilloli…

Halitosis as a product of hepatic disease.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated halitosis in patients suffering from hepatic disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients (12 males and 13 females) aged between 16 and 73 years who had undergone treatment for liver disease were included in this study. Three halimeter recordings were performed to measure methyl mercarptan and hydrogen sulphite. Mean values were calculated and compared with normal values (75-120 ppb). The level of significance was set at P < .05. Results: Thirteen of the 25 subjects (52%) had normal Volatile Sulphur Compound (VSC) values (75-120 ppb). Twelve subjects (4…

[Clinical importance and diagnosis of halitosis].

The origin of halitosis comes from the Latin word "halitus" meaning 'breath, exhaled air', and in the Hungarian terminology it means bad and smelly breath. The human body emits a number of volatile molecules, which have a peculiar odour. Their presence is influenced by several factors, such as genetic, nutritional and psychological factors. Since bad breath belongs to taboo subjects, halitosis can often lead to social isolation. To determine the incidence of halitosis, an exact diagnosis is needed which sometimes predestinates the possible treatment as well. Investigators estimate the incidenc…

Halitosis: a stomatological and psychological issue.

It can be stated that halitosis is located on the ridge connecting dentistry, oral medicine, parodontology and psychology. It represents, at the same time, the manifestation of an organic malfunctioning of the oral apparatus, and a problematic element for the individual and his/her relational life. A smelly emanation comes into conflict with the wish to attract, to please, to seduce. The attitudes towards the possibility to suffer from bad breath have two typical opposite expressions, which share the common characteristic that many are bad judges of one's own breath. The dentist, in fact, is f…

Clinical examination of subjects with halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and apply a detailed clinical protocol for screening and assessing subjects with a complaint of halitosis. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Several methods were used to recruit subjects with a complaint of halitosis, including a newspaper advertisement. A definition of halitosis arising from within the oral cavity, which is not related to generalized chronic gingivitis, chronic periodontitis or pathology of the oral mucosa was used. An extensive list of exclusion criteria was applied at the initial visit. Eligible subjects were asked to follow strict instr…

Historical and social aspects of halitosis.

Buccal odors have always been a factor of concern for society. This study aims to investigate the historical and social base of halitosis, through systematized research in the database BVS (biblioteca virtual em saúde - virtual library in health) and also in books. Lack of knowledge on how to prevent halitosis allows for its occurrence, limiting quality of life. As social relationships are one of the pillars of the quality of life concept, halitosis needs to be considered a factor of negative interference. Education in health should be accomplished with a view to a dynamic balance, involving h…

Evaluation of halitosis in children and mothers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence and clinical parameters that are associated with halitosis in pediatric dental patients and compare these findings with those found for the patients' mother. METHODS: Children aged 5 to 12 years old were evaluated with mothers present during a dental visit. Each mother completed the child's medical history and a breath odor questionnaire. The mother and an oral breath judge (OBJ) evaluated the child's oral breath using organoleptic methods. A commercial breath analyzer (CBA) measured the oral and nasal levels of volatile sul…

Oral and nonoral sources of halitosis.

Oral malodor (halitosis, bad breath) is a condition affecting millions of Americans. In healthy individuals complaining of bad breath, the mouth is the main source of their oral malodor, more specifically the posterior dorsum of the tongue. Nonoral sources should also be considered. It is always easy to recognize halitosis, but identifying the exact cause is more complex.

The effects of oral rinses on halitosis.

Oral rinses are increasingly becoming an important treatment option for halitosis. There are few products on the market that have been thoroughly evaluated in clinical trials designed to test for the long-term efficacy of mouthrinses in the management of this disorder. This review looks at some of the potential causes and detection methods or oral malodor along with the bacterial, microbiological and biochemical processes involved. The article presents the available literature on clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and mechanisms of action of the different types of oral rinses used in the …
