Reversible sensorineural hearing loss in a stroke patient.

A case is presented of a patient with lateral pontine stroke which resulted in a moderate unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. ABR, word recognition scores, acoustic reflexes, neurological evaluation, and CT scan were consistent with brain stem lesion. Recovery of hearing, including acoustic reflexes and word recognition ability, occurred 2 months after the stroke.

Otosclerosis and sensorineural hearing loss: a histopathologic study.

The precise role and mechanism whereby otosclerosis is associated with sensorineural hearing loss remains unclear. Previous histopathologic reports are inconsistent with regard to the location of the otosclerotic focus, invasion of the otic capsule, and the number of remaining peripheral sensorineural elements. From the combined temporal bone collections of the University of Chicago and the Mayo Clinic, we identified a group of 125 ears from 80 patients, all with confirmed otosclerosis. Six of these ears were associated clinically with sensorineural hearing loss without stapes fixation. The hi

The pathology of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

We examined the temporal bone pathologies in 12 ears with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and found that the lesions present in these specimens and in 10 others reported in the literature are similar to lesions occurring in known cases of viral cochleitis. These lesions are unlike those resulting from known vascular causes.

Accelerated Long-Term Hearing Loss Progression After Recovery From Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Background and Introduction: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is characterized by rapid onset, typically unilateral presentation, and variable recovery. This case-control observational study aimed to improve patient counseling by objectively characterizing long-term hearing loss progression following ISSNHL, using sequential audiometry in the largest-to-date cohort of patients with ISSNHL. Methods: Patients diagnosed with ISSNHL at a tertiary referral hospital from 1994 through 2018 with sequential audiometry were studied. Case controls with sensorineural hearing loss (SNH

Postoperative sensorineural hearing loss associated with prolonged hypocalcemia.

A 57-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease and secondary hyperparathyroidism underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy and developed profound postoperative hypocalcemia consistent with hungry bone syndrome, followed by acute sensorineural hearing loss on postoperative day 3. Calcium plays a critical role in cochlear hair cell transduction and auditory signaling, and disruptions in calcium homeostasis have been associated with hearing loss, although primarily in chronic or syndromic conditions rather than acute postoperative states. This case underscores the importance of aggressive calcium re

Mendelian Randomization Reveals: Triglycerides and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a multifactorial disorder with potential links to various physiological systems, including the cardiovascular system via blood lipid levels such as triglycerides (TG). This study investigates the causal relationship between TG levels and SNHL using Mendelian randomization (MR), which offers a method to reduce confounding and reverse causality by using genetic variants as instrumental variables. METHODS: Utilizing publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, we performed a two-sample MR analysis. The initial analysis unveiled a

Sensorineural hearing loss and cognitive impairment: three hypotheses.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a category of hearing loss that often leads to difficulty in understanding speech and other sounds. Auditory system dysfunction, including deafness and auditory trauma, results in cognitive deficits via neuroplasticity. Cognitive impairment (CI) refers to an abnormality in the brain's higher intellectual processes related to learning, memory, thinking and judgment that can lead to severe learning and memory deficits. Studies have established a strong correlation between SNHL and CI, but it remains unclear how SNHL contributes to CI. The purpose of this arti

Acquired sensorineural hearing loss, oxidative stress, and microRNAs.

Hearing loss is the third leading cause of human disability. Age-related hearing loss, one type of acquired sensorineural hearing loss, is largely responsible for this escalating global health burden. Noise-induced, ototoxic, and idiopathic sudden sensorineural are other less common types of acquired hearing loss. The etiology of these conditions is complex and multi-factorial involving an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Oxidative stress has recently been proposed as a likely linking cause in most types of acquired sensorineural hearing loss. Short non-coding RNA sequences know

Recurrent sudden sensorineural hearing loss-A literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is one of the few emergent otologic conditions. Although more than half of all patients would benefit from timely treatment, recurrence occasionally develops unexpectedly. The aim of our study is to evaluate the recurrence rate after SSNHL, and present the prognosis after first-episode and recurrent SSNHL. METHODS: A literature search was conducted of the PubMed and Embase electronic databases. RESULTS: Seven studies with a total of 3781 patients were included, and 96 patients experienced recurrence. The recurrence rate ranged between 1.4%

Sensorineural Hearing Loss After Balloon Eustachian Tube Dilatation.

Objective: Eustachian tube function is of central importance for the ventilation of the middle ear. A dysfunction can be associated with chronic otitis media, and cholesteatoma. Balloon Eustachian tube dilatation (BET) is a treatment option used to solve eustachian tube dysfunction. Although BET is widely performed, little is known about the occurrence rate of the complications associated with BET. The aim of the present study was to observe the rate of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) after BET. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated in a chart review 1,547 patients and 2,614 procedures of BE

Mitochondrial myopathy and sensorineural hearing loss: case study.

Mitochondrial myopathy is caused by the absence and/or insufficiency of L-carnitine, a quaternary enzyme responsible for transporting free fatty acids into the mitochondria. The primary function of the mitochondria is to produce energy, contributing to proper cell functioning. Muscular lipidosis causes abnormalities in enzymes that metabolize fat, resulting in the accumulation of harmful amounts of fats in tissues. The aim of this study was to present the case study of patient B.D., a 37-year-old woman diagnosed with muscular lipidosis with L-carnitine deficiency at 6 years old, and describe t

Congenital Human Cytomegalovirus Infection Inducing Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is the primary cause of congenital infections. Despite its clinical significance, congenital HCMV infection is frequently overlooked clinically since most affected infants are asymptomatic. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is one of the most widely known disorders caused by congenital HCMV infection. The potential mechanism, however, remains unknown to date. The mechanism by which congenital HCMV infection induces sensorineural deafness has been partly characterized, leading to advancements in diagnosis, therapy, and prevention strategies. HCMV-induced hearing los

Contralateral sensorineural hearing loss after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Contralateral sensorineural hearing loss (CSNHL) after vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a severe complication, especially in those cases in which hearing preservation in the operated side was not possible. There are several theories that attempt to explain this issue, but there is no established guideline of treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report 4 patients treated in our institution who developed a severe CSNHL after surgery. RESULTS: Of the 185 cases of VS treated with surgery, 4 patients (2.2%) developed a CSNHL after VS surgery. After medical treatment, partial recovery of

Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss in dialysis patients.

Although sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) affects chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients more frequently than non-CKD patients, few reports have described SSNHL in dialysis patients. We aimed to review the characteristics of SSNHL in chronic dialysis patients and evaluate treatment responses to steroid therapy. We retrospectively reviewed the records of dialysis patients diagnosed with idiopathic SSNHL at Asan Medical Center between January 2000 and December 2014. Pure tone and speech audiometry analyzes were performed before and 2 weeks and 2 months after treatment onset to evaluate o

Correlation between sensorineural hearing loss and chronic otorrhea.

Many studies have attempted to correlate chronic otorrhea in children and in adults with the sensorineural hearing loss in the affected ear, with contradictory results. This loss might be the result of the likely toxicity of the bacteria involved, effects of inflammatory cytokines, or constant use of ototoxic antibiotics. All studies evaluated to date compared the affected ear with the normal contralateral ear. From the digitized archive of otologic surgery files of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Santa Casa de São Paulo School of Medical Sciences, the ears of patients with chronic ot
