Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) are one of many species within zoologic collections that frequently develop iron storage disease. The goals of this retrospective multi-institutional study were to determine the tissue distribution of iron storage in captive adult Egyptian fruit bats and the incidence of intercurrent neoplasia and infection, which may be directly or indirectly related to iron overload. Tissue sections from 83 adult Egyptian fruit bats were histologically evaluated by using tissue sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, trichrome, and Prussian blue techniques. Th

Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM) is a rare clinicopathologic entity causing severe pulmonary hypertension, right-side heart failure, and sudden death. Its histologic features include widespread tumor emboli of the small arteries and arterioles of the lung, associated with thrombus formation and fibrocellular and fibromuscular intimal proliferation. The most frequent causative neoplasm for PTTM is gastric cancer, but lesions in other organs, including the ovary, have been occasionally identified as primary causes. Detailed molecular mechanisms underlying PTTM remain unclear, bu

Radiation therapy is often used in an attempt to palliate or cure oesophageal neoplasms. However, the radiation tolerance of the normal structures around the oesophagus (heart, lung and spinal cord) restricts the radiation dose that can be delivered. We used a nasogastric catheter to deliver High Dose Intra-luminal Iridium-192 irradiation for carcinoma of the oesophagus using HDR-Varisource machine. This technique for treatment of carcinoma of the oesophagus can help overcome the dose restraints. The external beam radiation dose was about 46 Gy and the intra luminal dose was 5 Gy at 1 cm from

Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), including essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia vera, and myelofibrosis, are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and complications. The most recognized cardiovascular complications among patients with MPN are arterial and venous thrombotic events. However, mounting evidence suggest that nonthrombotic cardiovascular complications, including heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, are also common and are associated with adverse outcomes and overall prognosis. Therefore, it is important that hematologists become aware of such complica

Dysphagia is a common clinical symptom in older people that can be attributed to a wide range of diseases, extending from neoplasm to gastroesophageal reflux diseases such as stroke or achalasia. We are presenting a case of a 78-year-old male with a history of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and progressive dysphagia, due to a rare case, namely, dysphagia megalatriensis. Even though left ventricular ejection fraction was preserved, the patient improved, when we provided him with optimal medical heart failure with reduced ejection fraction treatment. In our case report, we intend

Tumours metastatic to the heart (cardiac metastases) are among the least known and highly debated issues in oncology, and few systematic studies are devoted to this topic. Although primary cardiac tumours are extremely uncommon (various postmortem studies report rates between 0.001% and 0.28%), secondary tumours are not, and at least in theory, the heart can be metastasised by any malignant neoplasm able to spread to distant sites. In general, cardiac metastases are considered to be rare; however, when sought for, the incidence seems to be not as low as expected, ranging from 2.3% and 18.3%. A

A case is described of a 54 year old woman who had acute pericarditis with large exudative effusion accompanied by severe right and left ventricular failure. The patient was finally diagnosed with carcinoid heart disease from an ovarian carcinoid teratoma. She was treated with octreotide--a somatostatin analogue--followed by radical surgical resection of the neoplasm. At one year follow up only mild carcinoid tricuspid regurgitation remained. Only 16 cases of carcinoid heart disease from an ovarian primary have been described in literature. Moreover clinically manifest acute, nonmetastatic per

BACKGROUND: Carcinoid syndrome is a rare disease caused by malignant neuroendocrine neoplasms. When vasoactive substances enter the systemic circulation, the triad of cutaneous flushing, bronchospasm, and diarrhoea often characterize carcinoid syndrome. Rarely, carcinoid syndrome can progress to involve the cardiac system, a condition known as carcinoid heart disease, often affecting right-sided valvular structures.
CASE SUMMARY: Here, we present a case of malignant carcinoid syndrome with associated carcinoid heart disease in a 63-year-old female. The diagnosis of her dual regurgitant and st

OBJECTIVES: Heart transplantation (HTx) is still one of the most effective therapies for end-stage heart disease for patients with no other medical or surgical therapy. We report the results of our 25-year orthotropic HTx single-centre experience.
METHODS: From November 1985, 905 orthotopic heart transplants have been performed at our centre. We exclude from the present analysis 13 patients who underwent re-transplantation and 14 pediatric cases (age at HTx <15 years).
RESULTS: The present study collected the data of 878 primary adult orthotopic HTx performed at our centre. Mean age at HTx w

A rare case of left atrial rhabdomyosarcoma is presented in a patient with symptoms of congestive heart failure mimicking a hemodynamically obstructive mitral stenosis and secondary pulmonary hypertension. Although the diagnosis of a cardiac neoplasm is often difficult, it should be suspected in any patient with idiopathic heart failure refractory to conventional therapy, or with systemic or pulmonary emboli without an obvious source. The possibility of a "tumor plop" should always be considered during auscultation of a diastolic click. If clinically suspected, echocardiography will usually es

CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat was referred to the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, USA for suspected dysautonomia based on weight loss, vomiting and referral radiographs that showed severe dilation of the esophagus, stomach and entire gastrointestinal tract. After recheck radiographs revealed a decrease in gas compared with the referral images, persistently reduced gastrointestinal motility was deemed less likely; however, cardiomegaly and a soft tissue opacity overlying the esophagus were noted. Echocardiogram identified a pulmonary mass either impinging

Small bowel neuroendocrine tumors (SBNETS) are slow-growing neoplasms with a noted propensity toward metastasis and comparatively favorable prognosis. The presentation of SBNETs is varied, although abdominal pain and obstructive symptoms are the most common presenting symptoms. In patients with metastases, hypersecretion of serotonin and other bioactive amines results in diarrhea, flushing, valvular heart disease, and bronchospasm, termed carcinoid syndrome. The treatment of SBNETs is multimodal and includes surgery, liver-directed therapy, somatostatin analogues, targeted therapy, and peptide

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare histiocytic neoplasm associated with MAPK pathway mutations. Disease manifestation is variable often involving many different organs, mainly bone, retroperitoneum, the heart, and the central nervous system. Histological findings include foamy histiocytes in a fibrous stroma with scattered inflammatory infiltrate. Histiocytes are CD68 positive and S100 negative. Case Report. We report a case of Erdheim-Chester disease associated with small lymphocytic lymphoma presenting as a perirenal mass with a review of the recent literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Erdhe

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare lesions of the gastrointestinal tract that have a strong predisposition to the stomach and small intestine. We present a case of an 89-year-old female who initially presented to the emergency room with signs and symptoms of acute decompensated heart failure (HF) and was later discovered to have a 23-centimeter GIST in her abdominal cavity. This case emphasizes the implications of large intraperitoneal neoplasms and the unique constellation of symptoms they may present with.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac metastases are a rare complication, with an incidence ranging from 2.3% to 18.3%. While secondary heart neoplasms are more common than primary ones, germ cell tumour (GCT) involvement is rare, with less than 30 cases reported globally. Mixed GCTs of gonadal location are a type of cancer that rarely metastasize the heart.
CASE SUMMARY: We present the case of a 31-year-old male with a history of testicular GCT. A few months after radical right orchiectomy, he developed respiratory distress and heart failure, associated with the presence of masses in the tricuspid valve and p…

INTRODUCTION: Plasma cell neoplasms (PCNs) are a rare type of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD). Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare type of PCN, and is infrequently located in the retroperitoneum. According to the current literature, heart transplant recipients are considered at intermediate risk for developing PTLD.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 70-year-old patient with a history of heart transplantation, who was admitted to the hospital with back pain and swelling of the left lower limb. Imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal mass involving the left kidney,

Death certificates filed between 1960 and 1979 in Osaka, Japan were analyzed to study causes of death in diabetic patients. It was observed that diseases of the circulatory system increased continuously from 15.2% in 1960-1964 to 27.2% in 1975-1979. Cerebrovascular disease and disease of heart were the leading causes of death throughout the study period. The rate of increase was much faster for disease of heart than for cerebrovascular disease, and there was only a small difference between them as cause of death in diabetic patients at the end of the observation period. Malignant neoplasms, ci

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare condition characterized by a tumor that originates within a pelvic vein wall or the uterine smooth muscle, with extension into the right heart (referred to as intracardiac leiomyomatosis) in approximately 10% of all IVL cases. Usually, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is performed for diagnostic imaging of IVL. Notably, this neoplasm presents with characteristic ultrasonographic findings. In this report, we present the case of a 49-year-old woman with IVL, which extended into the right heart. Echocardiography combined with
