Phonocardiographic and echocardiographic investigation was performed in patients with progressive muscular dystrophy of Duchenne type (PMD). The clinical materials consisted of 90 patients with PMD (aged 8 to 21 yrs, a mean of 14.5), and 90 normal subjects (aged 6 to 19 yrs, a mean of 11.7). The patients with PMD were classified into 8 stages from the mildest, S(1), to the severest, S(8), according to Swinyard-Deaver' criteria. In the 90 normal subjects the diminished first heart sound was noted in 12 cases (13.3%), presystolic murmurs in 4 cases (4.4%), and diastolic rumbles in 9 cases (10%),

To provide additional information on the relation of valvular events to the principal components of the first heart sound (s1), combined echocardiograms and phonocardiograms were recorded in 49 subjects, chosen because of audible splitting of S1 or a combination of S1 and an ejection sound. The subjects included 14 normal persons, 16 patients with a variety of predominantly right-sided heart conditions, 7 with mitral stenosis, 3 with pulmonary stenosis and 9 with aortic valve disease or systemic hypertension. A precise relation was found between completion of closure of the atrioventricular (A

Heart regurgitation is a cardiac condition characterized by the backward flow of blood, producing audible murmur sounds detectable during auscultation. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications affecting cardiac function. This article presents a comprehensive dataset of heart sound recordings, including aortic regurgitation (AR), mitral regurgitation (MR), tricuspid regurgitation (TR), and healthy heart sounds, collected from patients at a single hospital using an electronic stethoscope. For each participant, recordings were obtained from three standard chest locations, and all d…

Timely and accurate heart sound detection is essential for early screening of cardiovascular diseases. Traditional stethoscope-based methods are constrained by time, location, and human factors. Considering the reasonable cost, portability, and accuracy of heart sound detection, this study designs and implements a hardware prototype for a portable home-use heart sound detection device based on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensor and an ESP32 microcontroller (weighing 115 g with a power consumption of 0.42W). The device is capable of heart sound signal collection, conditioning, and wireless

BACKGROUND: Heart auscultation is an easy and inexpensive tool for early diagnosis of congenital heart defects. In this regard, a simple device which can be used easily by physicians for heart murmur detection will be very useful. The current study was conducted to evaluate the validity of a Doppler-based device named "Doppler Phonolyser" for the diagnosis of structural heart diseases in pediatric patients. In this cross-sectional study, 1272 patients under 16 years who were referred between April 2021 and February 2022, to a pediatric cardiology clinic in Mofid Children Hospital, Tehran, Iran

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world, and its early detection is a key to improving long-term health outcomes. The auscultation of the heart is still an important method in the medical process because it is very simple and cheap. To detect possible heart anomalies at an early stage, an automatic method enabling cardiac health low-cost screening for the general population would be highly valuable. By analyzing the phonocardiogram signals, it is possible to perform cardiac diagnosis and find possible anomalies at an early-term. Therefore, the development of intellige

Heart sounds are a fundamental physiological variable that provide a unique insight into cardiac semiotics. However a deterministic and unambiguous association between noises in cardiac dynamics is far from being accomplished yet due to many and different overlapping events which contribute to the acoustic emission. The current computer-based capacities in terms of signal detection and processing allow one to move from the standard cardiac auscultation, even in its improved forms like electronic stethoscopes or hi-tech phonocardiography, to the extraction of information on the cardiac activity…

Heart and arterial sounds and murmurs for a sequence of as many as 100 successive beats are recorded on a single print. The apparatus consists of a cathode ray oscilloscope, a Q-wave trigger to release the beam, a vertical axis which is connected to the blood pressure cuff, and an intensity modulation circuit which determines the intensity of the beam at each instant. This arrangement eliminates the baseline and thereby permits the display of low intensity acoustic signals. Data on normal subjects, and patients with various heart diseases are illustrated. Advantages and limitations of the meth

In 53 patients with either normal hearts or with rheumatic valve disease (predominantly mitral disease), third and fourth heart sounds (S3, S4), were recorded by intracardiac phonocardiography inthe left ventricle, left atrium and/or ascending aorta. The corresponding sounds were recorded externally in less than one half of the cases only. The S3 was mostly present in the ventricle and in cases of volume overload. The S4 was found with about the same incidence in the left atrium and left ventricle, and more often in cases of pressure overload. The incidence of these sounds showed only a minima…
