Diagnostic survey at Yamanashi School for Blind: importance of heredity.

The commonest cause of blindness among the 67 patients at the Yamanashi School for the Blind was congenital cataract (16). Next was retinitis pigmentosa or choroido-retinal degeneration (8), then retinopathy of prematurity (7). Congenital glaucoma and brain tumor each contributed five. Four were due to microphthalmia/micro-cornea and five to high myopia. Direct ocular trauma caused three. Two each were attributable to complete albinism, aniridia, congenital nystagmus and bilateral retinoblastoma. Single cases each of anophthalmos, Behçet's disease, Hallerman-Streiff syndrome, hydrocephalus, ma

Ryssia Wolfsohn's 1907 dissertation on "the heredity of dementia praecox".

In the 19th century, psychiatric genetic studies typically utilized a generic category of "insanity." This began to change after 1899, with the publication of Kraepelin's 6th edition containing, among other disorders, his mature concept of dementia praecox (DP). We here review an article published by Ryssia Wolfsohn in 1907 from her dissertation at the University of Zurich entitled "Die Heredität bei Dementia praecox" (The Heredity of Dementia Praecox). This work, performed under the supervision of E. Bleuler, was to our knowledge the first formal genetic study of the then new diagnosis of DP.…

Biological clock and heredity in pubertal timing: what is new?

Puberty represents a milestone during a person's life and is characterized by several physical and psychological changes which end with the achievement of sexual maturation and of fertility. Puberty onset depends on a series of sophisticated, not completely understood, mechanisms certainly involving Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) and its effects on pituitary gonadotropins. As recent evidence has demonstrated that pubertal timing deeply affects future adult health life, many efforts have been performed in order to clarify the exact actors involved in the onset and progression of puberty.

Role of Heredity in Melanoma Susceptibility: A Primer for the Practicing Surgeon.

Melanoma is a deadly skin cancer linked to ultraviolet radiation exposure. Heritable traits and sporadic mutations modify an individual's risk for melanoma that may be associated with phenotype. Familial/heritable melanomas are broadly used to describe families with an increased incidence of melanomas, although the underlying mutation may be unknown. Mutations associated with melanoma occur in cell cycle regulation, tumor suppression, chromosomal stability, DNA repair, pigmentation, and melanocyte differentiation genes. Genetic testing of individuals with a family history of melanoma may provi

Osteochondral lesion of the talus in homozygous twins--the question of heredity.

We present a case of osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT) in homozygous twins in adolescence occurring with no history of trauma. The aetiology of OLT is discussed.

Blindness in schoolchildren: importance of heredity, congenital cataract, and prematurity.

Of 99 children in the Royal Blind School, Edinburgh (which serves Scotland and part of N E England), 15 had optic atrophy (hydrocephalus 4, intracranial haemorrhage 2, prematurity 2, fetal distress 2, birth asphyxia 2, cerebral atrophy 1, cardiac arrest during hernia operation 1, and leukaemia 1). Fourteen had congenital cataract, 12 congenital retinal aplasia (Leber's congenital amaurosis) and 11 retinopathy of prematurity. There were small numbers in many other diagnostic categories, including three with non-accidental head injury. Mental retardation, spasticity, and nystagmus were frequent

Heredity in one hundred patients admitted for excision of pterygia.

One hundred consecutive patients admitted to hospital for excision of pterygia were compared with 100 control patients without pterygia. Of the pterygia group 38% had one or more relatives with pterygia, compared with 8% (? 12%) of the control group. Exposure to solar radiation was considered to be similar in both groups.

Nd:YAG laser treatment of recurrent epistaxis in heredity hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

OBJECTIVE: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an inherited abnormality passed down as a dominant autosomal feature. Recurrent epistaxis usually constitutes the major clinical manifestation of this disease. The unsatisfactory results of conservative therapy have stimulated a research interest for the role of laser photocoagulation in telangiectatic vessels associated with this clinical entity. METHOD: The Nd:YAG laser was used to treat a group of 11 individuals suffering from HHT, all of whom had been previously treated using other modalities. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The excellent

Heredity and age-related macular degeneration. Observations in monozygotic twins.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the concordance of age-related macular degenerative changes in monozygotic twins. PATIENTS: Between 1984 and 1993, we examined a total of nine pairs of monozygotic twins with substantial age-related macular degenerative changes in at least one member of the pair, ranging from extensive large drusen to advanced atrophic and/or disciform scarring. Eight pairs were female and one pair was male. Ages ranged from 62 to 88 years. Monozygosity was confirmed by genetic testing in each of the seven twin pairs on whom it was performed. RESULTS: In eight of the nine twin pairs,

[Congenital cataract in two families: Heredity and treatment (author's transl)].

A report is given on the inheritance of congenital cataract in two families. While in one family the males were mainly affected, in the second faimily the females were mainly affected with congenital cataract. In our experience an operation is only indicated if the visual acuity is no longer sufficient for day-to day living (less than 0.25).
