Endocrine evaluation of hirsutism.

Hirsutism is defined as excessive terminal hair growth in a male pattern in females. It typically affects 5 to 10% of reproductive-age women. Excessive hair growth can often cause significant psychological and emotional distress. As a result, hirsutism is a common presenting complaint to healthcare professionals, including dermatologists, as women search for cosmetic and medical solutions to their problem. Hirsutism results from excess production of androgens, often from ovarian or adrenal sources. It is typically associated with a metabolic syndrome like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), bu…

Hirsutism: investigation and management.

In all hirsute women, a careful diagnostic evaluation should be performed, and the findings will largely influence the therapeutic decisions … ome should have an oral glucose-tolerance test and a complete lipid profile. No ideal treatment for hirsutism exists but, with careful combination of pharmacological treatments and direct hair removal, it is generally possible to obtain a prolonged improvement of hirsutism.

'Hirsutism': a psychological analysis.

Hirsutism, i.e. 'excess' body hair in the 'male' distribution, is a medical term applied only to women. Although associated with social and psychological difficulties including anxiety, social avoidance and a confusion of gender identity and although it raises important gender issues, there has been little systematic study. No prior research has focussed on the relationship between women's perceived degree of hirsutism and psychological distress. A survey of 53 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which often produces 'excess' hair growth, was carried out to assess any psychological co…

Cyproterone acetate for hirsutism.

BACKGROUND: Hirsutism is a distressing and relatively common endocrine problem in women which may prove difficult to manage. Cyproterone acetate, an anti-androgen, is frequently used to treat hirsutism, usually in combination with ethinyl estradiol. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to investigate the effectiveness of cyproterone acetate alone, or in combination with ethinyl estradiol, in reducing hair growth in women with hirsutism secondary to ovarian hyperandrogenism. SEARCH STRATEGY: The Cochrane Menstrual Disorders and Subfertility Group trials register was searched (last sea…

Finasteride cream in hirsutism.

OBJECTIVE: To determine, in a preliminary study, whether women with hirsutism attributable to various causes would benefit from treatment with finasteride cream. METHODS: Finasteride cream (0.25%) and placebo cream were administered to eight women with various degrees of facial hirsutism. The two creams were used on opposite sides of the face in an area of excessive hair growth. The side chosen for the finasteride cream versus placebo was randomized and blinded. In a 1 cm2 area on each side of the face, hair counts were done every 2 months throughout the 6-month study period. Hair thickness w…
