INTRODUCTION: Complete Hydatidiform mole is one of the most frequent abnormal pregnancies. This review studies the trend of complete mole in Paropakar Maternity and Women's hospital and clinical ability to detect it.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 504 cases of complete hydatidiform mole recorded at Paropakar maternity and women's hospital, Kathmandu, during 2058-2065 B.S. Medical records were reviewed and incidence, clinical presentation and method of diagnosis were studied.
RESULTS: During the study period, there were 13,9117 births and 504 complete moles, 12 partial moles, 48 pe…

Multiple pregnancies with hydatidiform mole are rare. We describe here a patient who delivered a male fetus and a female fetus together with molar tissue following treatment for infertility. comparing microsatellite polymorphisms in the DNA from the patient, her partner, the two normal placentas and the molar tissue, we were able to show that this was a triplet pregnancy with two normal conceptions and a complete hydatidiform mole of monospermic origin.

Recent trends toward early pregnancy ultrasound have led to evacuation of complete hydatidiform moles at a stage before the development of diffuse trophoblast hyperplasia and villous cavitation. Absence of these recognized diagnostic criteria can lead to misdiagnosis and subsequent trophoblastic neoplasia. The authors identified a case of very early complete hydatidiform mole (VECM) on review of a previous curettage specimen when the patient presented 4 weeks later with increasing human chorionic gonadotropin (HCC) titers and the typical histological features of complete mole on a subsequent c…

Four patients with partial hyatidiform mole managed at the Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, are described. The diagnosis of blighted ovum or missed abortion was made on the sonographic findings prior to suction evacuation. The dominant features in these cases consisted of a relatively large central transonic area bearing the appearance of an empty gestational sac and surrounded by a thick rim of low-level placenta-like echoes; in contrast with the case of the blighted ovum, a well-defined echogenic sac wall is absent. In another 9 patients with molar pregnancy managed during the same period, th

Partial hydatidiform mole differs from complete mole by its focal distribution, its slower transformation, the presence of an embryo or fetus, and the triploid karyotype. Nineteen pathologically proved cases are presented. Partial mole can be diagnosed by a combination of the following sonographic findings: (a) greatly enlarged placenta relative to the size of the uterine cavity, (b) cystic spaces within the placenta ("molar placenta"), which may not always be present, (c) an amniotic cavity (gestational sac), either empty or containing amorphous fetal echoes, and (d) a well-formed but growth-…
