Effects of Different Vegetation Types on Soil Hydrological Properties, Understory Diversity, and Water Conservation Capacity in the Horqin Sandy Land, China.

The Northern Sand Prevention Belt is an important ecological security barrier in China. It is also one of the regions most severely affected by wind-eroded desertification. In this study, to investigate differences in soil properties among different vegetation types in sandy areas, a typical vegetation restoration area in the Horqin Sandy Land was selected. Widely distributed natural forests of Ulmus pumila, Populus plantations and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica plantations were the study objects, with bare sandy land as the control. Understory herbaceous plant diversity and soil hydrological

Steroid estrogen biodegradation across hydrological seasons is shaped by distinct substrate and bacterioplankton network controls in a river-connected floodplain lake.

Emerging contaminant attenuation in freshwater lakes may depend on metabolically available organic substrates and the organization of indigenous microbial communities, yet their relative contributions across hydrological seasons remain unclear. Using estrone as a representative steroid estrogen, we investigated its biodegradation potential (EBP) across contrasting wet and dry periods in Dongting Lake, China's second-largest freshwater lake. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) optical properties, biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC%), bacterioplankton community assembly, and co-occurrence n

Land use and hydrological seasonality regulate pollution source contributions and water-quality pattern shifts in tributaries discharging to the Yangtze River.

Tributaries entering large rivers are often regarded as pollutant delivery pathways, yet how land use and hydrological season jointly shape water-quality states and pollution-source signals remains insufficiently understood. Here, 28 tributaries entering the Yangtze River in Nanjing were investigated using monthly monitoring data for 23 water-quality parameters from 2016 to 2022. The modified comprehensive water quality index (WQI-DET) and trend tests were used to characterize long-term water-quality changes, self-organizing map (SOM) clustering to identify multivariate water-quality states, a

Life cycle and hydrologic modeling of rainwater harvesting in urban neighborhoods: Implications of urban form and water demand patterns in the US and Spain.

Water management plays a major role in any city, but applying alternative strategies might be more or less feasible depending on the urban form and water demand. This paper aims to compare the environmental performance of implementing rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems in American and European cities. To do so, two neighborhoods with a water-stressed Mediterranean climate were selected in contrasting cities, i.e., Calafell (Catalonia, Spain) and Ukiah (California, US). Calafell is a high-density, tourist city, whereas Ukiah is a typical sprawled area. We studied the life cycle impacts of RWH i

Hydrological seasonality reshapes sources and health risks of potentially toxic elements in a megacity river system of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration.

Reclaimed water has been increasingly used to sustain urban river flows, whereas the influence of seasonal hydrological variations on the behavior of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) remains insufficiently characterized. In this study, the PTEs characteristics in China's most typical reclaimed water-influenced river system were investigated during the whole hydrological year. PTEs in wet season was accumulated in mainstream under stronger hydrological connectivity, whereas that in dry season shifted toward tributaries and local hotspots under reduced discharge and weaker dilution. PTEs source

Unraveling the role of anthropogenic and hydrologic drivers with respect to the optical and molecular properties of dissolved organic matter and organic phosphorus in a P-contaminated river.

Anthropogenic and hydrological drivers are key factors influencing the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) in river runoff. However, how anthropogenic disturbances and hydrological conditions jointly affect the composition and characteristics of DOM and DOP in river runoff remains unclear. This study used fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, and the stable water isotopes to interpret the chemical composition and properties of DOM and DOP as well as their linkages to anthropogenic disturbances and hydro

Hydrological asymmetry and water stress in Peru: An integrated assessment of resource distribution, anthropogenic pressure, and governance gaps across three drainage basins.

BACKGROUND: Peru presents a paradigmatic case of hydrological asymmetry, where national water abundance (56,887 m 3/capita/year) masks acute … ed upon hydrological asymmetry, not absolute scarcity. Without institutional mechanisms reconciling hydrology, demography, and political economy, climatic variability will entrench coastal scarcity while Amazonian abundance remains underutilised. The integrated assessment framework presented provides transferable insights for water-rich yet spatially asymme …

Combined effects of hydrological conditions and socioeconomic factors on the seasonal dynamics of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in China, 2011-2022: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a tick-borne viral hemorrhagic fever with expanding geographical range. The determinants of the seasonal dynamics of SFTS remain poorly understood. METHODS: Monthly SFTS cases from 604 counties in five provinces with high-notification rate in China (2011-2022) were analyzed using hierarchical Bayesian spatiotemporal and distributed lag nonlinear models. Cumulative and month-specific effects of meteorological factors were assessed, with socioeconomic factors as modifiers. FINDINGS: The cumulative effect peaked at 21.97 °C (RR =

Impact of dam-induced hydrological fluctuations on the behavior of the endangered scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus): implications for river regulation strategies and conservation.

Since the mid-20th century, the global expansion of dam and reservoir construction has profoundly altered river ecosystems, with cascading effects on channel morphology, flow regimes, and freshwater biodiversity. Among these impacts, the disruption of natural flow variability remains a critical but under-analyzed factor, particularly regarding its influence on riparian waterbirds. To address this gap, we investigated the behavioral responses of the endangered Scaly-sided Merganser (Mergus squamatus), a wintering diving duck, to dam-induced hydrological fluctuations downstream of the Taoyuan Da

Health Assessment of Free-Ranging Eastern Indigo Snakes (Drymarchon couperi) from Hydrologic Restoration Construction Sites in South Florida, USA.

There is a paucity of information regarding the health status of free-ranging eastern indigo snakes (EIS; Drymarchon couperi) in heavily modified and developing landscapes. As a component of regional Florida Everglades restoration efforts, several areas occupied by EIS are being converted from agricultural lands to reservoirs. From 2020 to 2022, 28 EIS were opportunistically captured at two of these sites and brought into captivity to join a captive breeding colony; however, 11 snakes died within 5 mo of capture. Health assessments were performed on 28 individuals and included hematology and p

Residence and transport time scales associated with Shatt Al-Arab discharges under various hydrological conditions estimated using a numerical model.

Over the last several decades, concerns in the Northwest Arabian Gulf have risen regarding water quality and ecological conditions, particularly near Kuwait. This interest is mainly attributed to the reduction of freshwater discharge and its associated constituents from the Shatt Al Arab as a result of human activities at diverse scales. From the hydrological perspective, the reduction has also resulted in alteration to the dynamic regime and related residence time and transport conditions. Using a previously well-validated three-dimensional numerical model of the Northern Arabian Gulf (NAG) (

Hydrological connectivity and Burkholderia pseudomallei prevalence in wetland environments: investigating rice-farming community's risk of exposure to melioidosis in North-East Thailand.

In our analysis of 136 water samples from wetland environments (rice paddies, natural wetland sites, man-made water bodies) in rural areas of North-East Thailand, Burkholderia pseudomallei was most prevalent in rice paddies (15 of the 30 positive sites). The high prevalence in the water of rice fields is indicative of the inherent vulnerability of farmers in rural agricultural areas in this area of Thailand and likely other locations in the tropics. Nearly all B. pseudomallei-positive sites were found within the vicinity of a large wetland associated with the Chi River, in the month of July 20

Hydrological and anthropogenic associations with fecal contamination in coastal pore and surface waters: a one-year FIB and MST study of the Brazoria County, Texas coast.

Coastal recreational waters face increasing fecal contamination from poorly defined sources, yet most monitoring relies on fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) that cannot identify pollution origins. This study evaluated microbial water quality at 12 sites (six pore water, six surface water) along the Brazoria County, Texas coastline from July 2024 to June 2025, combining culturable enterococci with a general fecal marker (Entero1a) and two human-associated markers (HF183 and HumanmtND5), and integrating physicochemical parameters, precipitation, and Houston Freeport vessel-arrival data. Culturable

Towards Mechanistic Hydrological Limits: A Literature Synthesis to Improve the Study of Direct Linkages between Sediment Transport and Periphyton Accrual in Gravel-Bed Rivers.

Altered hydrological, sediment, and nutrient regimes can lead to dramatic increases in periphyton abundance in rivers below impoundments. Flushing flows are a commonly adopted strategy to manage the excess periphyton that can accumulate, but in practice they often prove ineffective. Designing hydrological regimes that include flushing flows may be overlooking key processes in periphyton removal, particularly the role of abrasion and molar action induced by substrate movement. Setting flow targets which aim to initiate substrate movement are likely to improve periphyton removal, but an understa

Iron‑sulfur geochemistry and acidity retention in hydrologically active macropores of boreal acid sulfate soils: Effects of mitigation suspensions of fine-grained calcite and peat.

Acid sulfate soils discharge large amounts of sulfuric acid along with toxic metals, deteriorating water quality and ecosystem health of recipient waterbodies. There is thus an urgent need to develop cost-effective and sustainable measures to mitigate the negative effects of these soils. In this study, we flushed aseptically-prepared MQ water (reference) or mitigation suspensions containing calcite, peat or a combination of both through 15-cm-thick soil cores from an acid sulfate soil field in western Finland, and investigated the geochemistry of Fe and S on the surfaces of macropores and in t

Seasonal temperatures and hydrological conditions improve the prediction of West Nile virus infection rates in Culex mosquitoes and human case counts in New York and Connecticut.

West Nile virus (WNV; Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) is a widely distributed arthropod-borne virus that has negatively affected human health and animal populations. WNV infection rates of mosquitoes and human cases have been shown to be correlated with climate. However, previous studies have been conducted at a variety of spatial and temporal scales, and the scale-dependence of these relationships has been understudied. We tested the hypothesis that climate variables are important to understand these relationships at all spatial scales. We analyzed the influence of climate on WNV infection rate of

Coupled hydrological pulse and geochemical buffering controls on acid mine drainage evolution: Insights from typical abandoned pyrite mines in Southern Shaanxi, China.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has emerged as a major global water-environment threat because legacy sulfide mining continuously releases acidity and toxic metals into surrounding water systems, causing long-term ecological degradation and threatening water-resource security. This study combined hydrochemical analysis, hydrogeochemical modeling, and a novel Carbonate-adjusted Modified Acid Mine Drainage Index (MAMDI_C) to investigate AMD evolution and iron mineral transformation processes across four representative mining areas (DBS, TLG, LHC, and JCG) in Southern Shaanxi, China. Results showed that
