Urinary composition predicts diuretic efficiency of hypertonic saline solution with furosemide therapy and heart failure prognosis.

Recently, we and other group have reported that furosemide administration along with hypertonic saline solution enhanced diuretic efficiency of furosemide. However, little is known about factors which associated with high diuretic efficiency by hypertonic saline solution with furosemide therapy. To identify predictors of diuretic efficiency in the hypertonic saline solution with furosemide therapy, we recruited 30 consecutive hospitalized heart failure (HF) patients with volume overload (77 ± 10 years, systolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg, and estimated glomerular filtration rate > 15 ml/min/1.73

Impact of Hypertonic Saline Solutions on Sputum Expectoration and Their Safety Profile in Patients with Bronchiectasis: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

BACKGROUND: The role of hyaluronic acid plus hypertonic saline (HA+HS) as a mucoactive treatment in patients with bronchiectasis is still unknown. This study evaluated whether HA+HS solution enhances similar sputum quantity with better safety profile than HS alone in patients with bronchiectasis. METHODS: In this double-blind randomized crossover trial, three solutions (7% HS; 0.1% HA +7%HS; and 0.9% isotonic saline, IS) were compared in outpatients with bronchiectasis and chronic sputum expectoration. Participants inhaled each solution across four consecutive sessions. All sessions, except o

Pressure- and dose-controlled transcutaneous pneumatic injection of hypertonic glucose solution for the treatment of atrophic skin disorders.

BACKGROUND: Needleless transcutaneous pneumatic injections (TPIs) are a minimally invasive way to deliver the solution into the skin for therapeutic purposes. The suggested action mechanisms of TPI therapy include mechanical stimulation, immediate tissue shrinkage and late wound healing. METHODS: Thirteen Korean patients were treated with TPI for atrophic skin disorders, including acne scars, striae albae, post-furuncle, or carbuncle scars, and horizontal wrinkles with lipoatrophy. At each TPI treatment session, a single pass was made along with the atrophic skin lesions without overlapping.

Effects of hypertonic saline hydroxyethyl starch solution and mannitol in patients with increased intracranial pressure after stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate a protocol with hypertonic saline hydroxyethyl starch (HS-HES) and mannitol in stroke patients with increased intracranial pressure (ICP). METHODS: We studied 30 episodes of ICP crisis in 9 patients. ICP crisis was defined as (1) a rise of ICP of more than 25 mm Hg (n = 22), or (2) pupillary abnormality (n=3), or (3) a combination of both (n=5). Baseline treatment was performed according to a standardized protocol. For initial treatment, the patients were randomly assigned to either infusion of 100 mL HS-HES or 40

Tolerance to the anxiolytic effects of the triazolobenzodiazepines triazolam and alprazolam, as measured by the ingestion of a hypertonic sodium chloride solution in rats.

Rats were adapted to a water-deprivation regimen that allowed daily 1-hr drinking sessions of a single fluid, either 1.5% NaCl solution or water. Oral, presession, acute doses of triazolam (0.05-1.6 mg/kg) or alprazolam (0.4-6.4 mg/kg) produced dose-related increases in session NaCl solution ingestion. The relative potencies found for these two drugs approximated their relative Ki values reported in the literature. The increased ingestion produced in this and other experiments by anxiolytic agents is presented as an alternative way of evaluating punishment attenuation, and hence anxiolytic act

RETRACTED: Acute preoperative hemodilution in cardiac surgery: volume replacement with a hypertonic saline-hydroxyethyl starch solution.

Preoperative hemodilution (HD) is a recommended practice in cardiac surgery that conserves blood and reduces the complications of homologous blood transfusion. In 45 patients undergoing myocardial revascularization, HD was performed preoperatively. Withdrawn volume (10 mL/kg) was replaced either by a new hypertonic saline (HS) solution prepared in hydroxyethyl starch (HES) (2,400 mOsm/L, HS-HES group, n = 15) or by a standard low molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch solution (6% HES 200/0.5, HES group, n = 15) to maintain baseline PCWP (acute normovolemic hemodilution [ANH]). Fifteen comparabl

Hypertonic sodium lactate versus lactated ringer's solution for intravenous fluid therapy in operations on the abdominal aorta.

Fifty-eight patients who were to undergo aortic reconstruction were prospectively randomized into two groups to compare the effects of perioperative fluid replacement with isotonic and hypertonic crystalloid solutions. Blood loss was replaced with packed red blood cells, and additional fluid was given as either Ringer's lactate solution (RL, 130 mEq sodium/L, 274 mOsm/L) or a hypertonic balanced salt solution (HSL, 250 mEq sodium/L, 514 mOsm/L). Fluid was administered to maintain the cardiac filling pressure within 3 torr of the preoperative level and the cardiac output (CO) at or above the pr

Hemodynamic effects of hypertonic hydroxyethyl starch 6% solution and isotonic hydroxyethyl starch 6% solution after declamping during abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Fluid resuscitation with hypertonic hydroxyethyl starch solutions (HES) is effective in haemorrhagic shock due to the rapid mobilisation of fluids into the intravascular compartment. Declamping of the abdominal aorta with acute redistribution of blood into the vessels of the lower body half causes declamping-induced hypotension. Usually large amount of fluids or vasopressors are necessary to restore hemodynamic stability. Therefore, infusion of a hypertonic colloid solution may be an attractive option to achieve hemodynamic stability. This study was conducted to determine the amount of fluid o

Comparison of equivolume, equiosmolar solutions of mannitol and hypertonic saline with or without furosemide on brain water content in normal rats.

BACKGROUND: Mannitol and hypertonic saline (HS) are used by clinicians to reduce brain water and intracranial pressure and have been evaluated in a variety of experimental and clinical protocols. Administering equivolume, equiosmolar solutions in healthy animals could help produce fundamental data on water translocation in uninjured tissue. Furthermore, the role of furosemide as an adjunct to osmotherapy remains unclear. METHODS: Two hundred twenty isoflurane-anesthetized rats were assigned randomly to receive equivolume normal saline, 4.2% HS (1,368 mOsm/L 25% mannitol (1,375 mOsm/L), normal

Fluid bolus resuscitation with hypertonic saline albumin solution in critically ill children: a prospective observational pilot study.

To evaluate the hemodynamic effects and the safety profile of fluid bolus resuscitation with hypertonic saline albumin (HSA) in critically ill children, we performed a prospective observational pilot study between October 2018 and May 2021 in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in a tertiary hospital in Madrid, Spain. Sixty-four HSA boluses were analyzed in 23 patients. A mean volume of 5.7 ml/kg (Standard Deviation, SD 2.3 ml/kg) per bolus was infused. Acute hypotension was the main indication. 91% of the patients had a cardiac disease, 56% of them had undergone cardiac surgery in the pr

Hypertonic Saline Solution Versus Mannitol for Brain Relaxation During Craniotomies: A Systematic Review and Updated Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The preferred osmotic agent used for brain relaxation during craniotomies remains unclear, either mannitol (MAN) or hypertonic saline (HTS). Hence, we sought to compare these solutions in this population. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases were systematically searched until August 02, 2023. Data were examined using the Mantel-Haenszel method and 95% CIs. Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics. Meta-regression analysis was conducted to evaluate a possible link between Brain Relaxation Score and tumor volume. R, version 4.2.3, was used for statis

Effects of a combination hemoglobin based oxygen carrier-hypertonic saline solution on oxygen transport in the treatment of traumatic shock.

BACKGROUND: Logistics complicate fluid resuscitation of traumatic shock on the battlefield. Traumatic shock can result in oxygen debt (O(2)D) accumulation that is fatal. However, the ability of fluid strategies to repay O(2)D are not commonly reported. This pilot study examined various resuscitation fluids, including a combination of PEGylated bovine hemoglobin and hypertonic saline (AfterShock™) on their ability to repay O(2)D in traumatic shock. METHODS: 41 anesthetized swine underwent hemorrhage to an O(2)D of 80 mL/kg. Animals received one of the following: 500 mL whole blood, 500 mL Afte
