Correlation Between Liver Stiffness and Diastolic Function, Left Ventricular Hypertrophy, and Right Cardiac Function in Patients With Ejection Fraction Preserved Heart Failure.

Objective: Ejection fraction preserved heart failure (HFpEF) is a common clinical syndrome with a high morbidity, accounting for ~50% of all heart failure patients, and a mortality comparable to that of ejection fraction reduced heart failure (HFrEF). The relationship between liver stiffness (LS) and HFpEF remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between LS and the severity of HFpEF. Methods: We performed a prospective observational study. After accepting liver transient elastography on admission, consecutive 150 hospitalized HFpEF patients were divided into th

Rosmarinic acid ameliorates the complications of monocrotaline-induced right ventricular hypertrophy on the left ventricle: Investigating the signaling pathway of Wnt/β-catenin in the heart.

OBJECTIVES: Right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) often results in failure of the right ventricle or even the left ventricle. Rosmarinic acid (RA), a natural polyphenol, is commonly found in Boraginaceae species and some species of ferns and hornworts. This study looked at how RA affects oxidative stress and left ventricular hemodynamic functions as well as RVH in monocrotaline (MCT) induced RVH model rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To cause RVH, MCT (60 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally (IP) injected. Rats were given saline or RA (10, 15, and 30 mg/kg, gavage, over 21 days). In anesthetized rats, the

Sodium butyrate alleviates right ventricular hypertrophy in pulmonary arterial hypertension by inhibiting H19 and affecting the activation of let-7g-5p/IGF1 receptor/ERK.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a complex and fatal cardio-pulmonary vascular disease. Decompensated right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) caused by cardiomyocyte hypertrophy often leads to fatal heart failure, the leading cause of mortality among patients. Sodium butyrate (SB), a compound known to reduce cardiac hypertrophy, was examined for its potential effect and the underlying mechanism of SB on PAH-RVH. The in vivo study showed that SB alleviated RVH and cardiac dysfunction, as well as improved life span and survival rate in MCT-PAH rats. The in vivo and in vitro experiments showe

Augmented O-GlcNAcylation exacerbates right ventricular dysfunction and remodeling via enhancement of hypertrophy, mitophagy, and fibrosis in mice exposed to long-term intermittent hypoxia.

Previously, we showed that augmented O-linked N-acetylglucosaminylation (O-GlcNAcylation) mitigates cardiac remodeling in O-GlcNAc transferase-transgenic (Ogt-Tg) mice exposed to acute (2-week) intermittent hypoxia (IH) by suppressing nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) via the O-GlcNAcylation of glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK-3β) and NF-κB p65. Because this effect is time dependent, we exposed Ogt-Tg mice to IH for 4 weeks (IH4W) in the present study. O-GlcNAcylation was significantly enhanced in Ogt-Tg mice vs. wild-type (WT) mice exposed to no

Time course sequences of angiotensin converting enzyme and chymase-like activities during development of right ventricular hypertrophy induced by pulmonary artery constriction in dogs.

ACE and chymase play crucial roles in the establishment of pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy. In the present study, time sequences of ACE and chymase-like activities, and their correlation with hypertrophic changes including free wall thickness and cardiac fibrosis, were elucidated in dogs with constant pressure overload to the right ventricle. Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) was applied so that the diameter of the main pulmonary artery was reduced to 60% of the original size, right ventricular pressure was elevated by about 70%, and pulmonary artery flow was increased by about thre

Kaempferol alleviates right ventricular hypertrophy in high-altitude pulmonary hypertension rats by modulating the AMPK/ACC/CPT1B axis and the AMPK-mediated LDHA/PDHA1 pathway.

This study evaluates the protective effects of kaempferol on right ventricular (RV) structure and function in a rat model of high-altitude pulmonary hypertension (HAPH) and explores the underlying mechanisms. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 57) were exposed to a simulated high-altitude environment (5000 m) for 28 days to induce HAPH, followed by the administration of kaempferol (25, 50, 100 mg kg-1 day-1) or sildenafil (30 mg kg-1 day-1). Echocardiography, hemodynamic measurements, and histopathological analyses revealed that kaempferol significantly reduced the RV/(LV + S) index, mean pulmonary

High-dose calcium channel-blocking therapy for primary pulmonary hypertension: evidence for long-term reduction in pulmonary arterial pressure and regression of right ventricular hypertrophy.

In an attempt to produce substantial reductions in pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension, a new treatment strategy using high doses of calcium channel-blocking drugs was developed. Thirteen patients were given an initial test dose of 60 mg diltiazem or 20 mg nifedipine followed by consecutive hourly doses until a 50% fall in pulmonary vascular resistance and 33% fall in pulmonary arterial pressure was achieved or untoward side effects developed. The initial drug challenges failed to produce significant reductions in mean p

Persistent pulmonary hypertension results in reduced tetralinoleoyl-cardiolipin and mitochondrial complex II + III during the development of right ventricular hypertrophy in the neonatal pig heart.

Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) results in right ventricular (RV) hypertrophy followed by right heart failure and an associated mitochondrial dysfunction. The phospholipid cardiolipin plays a key role in maintaining mitochondrial respiratory and cardiac function via modulation of the activities of enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation. In this study, changes in cardiolipin and cardiolipin metabolism were investigated during the development of right heart failure. Newborn piglets (<24 h old) were exposed to a hypoxic (10% O(2)) environment for 3 days, resulting i

Role of myocardial hypertrophy on acute and chronic right ventricular performance in relation to chronic volume overload in a porcine model: relevance for the surgical management of tetralogy of Fallot.

OBJECTIVES: The age for correction of tetralogy of Fallot has progressively declined to the postnatal period, often despite an increased rate of transannular patch repair. However, the long-term effect of premature exposure to chronic pulmonary insufficiency on the right ventricle remains unknown. On the basis of the relationship between the duration of pressure overload and age, the role of previous pressure load-related hypertrophy on right ventricular (RV) performance after chronic volume overload was investigated in a porcine model. METHODS: RV hypertrophy (RVH), induced by pulmonary arte

Natriuretic peptide receptor C contributes to disproportionate right ventricular hypertrophy in a rodent model of obesity-induced heart failure with preserved ejection fraction with pulmonary hypertension.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) currently has no therapies that improve mortality. Right ventricular dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension are common in HFpEF, and thought to be driven by obesity and metabolic syndrome. Thus, we hypothesized that an animal model of obesity-induced HFpEF with pulmonary hypertension would provide insight into the pathogenesis of right ventricular failure in HFpEF. Two strains of mice, one susceptible (AKR) and one resistant (C3H) to obesity-induced HFpEF, were fed high fat (60% fat) or control diet for 0, 2, or 20 weeks and evaluated by c

Detection of impaired fatty acid metabolism in right ventricular hypertrophy: assessment by I-123 beta-methyl iodophenyl pentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) myocardial single-photon emission computed tomography.

Fatty acid metabolism has been reported to be impaired earlier than myocardial blood flow in left ventricular hypertrophic myocardium, e.g., in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or hypertensive heart disease. The purpose of this study was to determine whether impaired fatty acid metabolism also occurs in right ventricular (RV) hypertrophy. The subjects consisted of 6 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 4 with primary pulmonary hypertension, 2 each with refractory pulmonary tuberculosis, tricuspid insufficiency, pulmonary embolism, 1 each with atrial septal defect, ventricular septal

The utility of modified Butler-Leggett criteria for right ventricular hypertrophy in detection of clinically significant shunt ratio in ostium secundum-type atrial septal defect in adults.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to test the hypothesis that there exists a correlation between the Butler-Leggett (BL) criterion for right ventricular hypertrophy on the electrocardiogram and the Qp/Qs shunt ratio in adults with ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASDs). METHODS: Demographic, cardiac catheterization, ASD closure, and electrocardiographic data were acquired on 70 patients with secundum ASDs closed percutaneously. Simple linear regression and logistic regression models were created to test the hypothesis. RESULTS: The mean Qp/Qs ratio and BL criterion value were 1.61 +

Bawei Chenxiang Wan ameliorates right ventricular hypertrophy in rats with high altitude heart disease by SIRT3-HIF1α-PDK/PDH signaling pathway improving fatty acid and glucose metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Bawei Chenxiang Wan (BCW) is among the most effective and widely used therapies for coronary heart disease and angina pectoris in Tibet. However, whether it confers protection through a right-ventricle (RV) myocardial metabolic mechanism is unknown. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were orally administrated with BCW, which was injected concurrently with a bolus of Sugen5416, and subjected to hypoxia exposure (SuHx; 5000 m altitude) for 4 weeks. Right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) in high-altitude heart disease (HAHD) was assessed using Fulton's index (FI; ratio of RV to left vent

Alcoholic extract of Salvia castanea Diels f. tomentosa Stib. ameliorates hypobaric hypoxia-induced right ventricular hypertrophy by inhibiting the P53-SAT1-ALOX15 pathway and up-regulating the SLC7A11-GPX4 pathway.

Salvia castanea Diels f. tomentosa Stib. (SCD) is a traditional Tibetan herbal medicine that is frequently employed in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. However, the mechanism of its effect on plateau hypoxia-induced right ventricular hypertrophy remains unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the antihypoxic effect of the alcoholic extract of Salvia castanea Diels f. tomentosa Stib. (SCDA) through a normal pressure hypoxia tolerance experiment in mice, and investigated the effect and possible mechanism of SCDA on hypoxia-induced right ventricular hypertrophy in rats. 0.3 and 0.6 g/

Effect of systemic hypertension on right ventricular morphology and function: an echocardiographic study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is an important cardiovascular risk factor worldwide. It is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Both diastolic and systolic dysfunction may occur in hypertensive heart disease. The ventricles are structurally and functionally interdependent on each other. This was an echocardiographic study intended to describe the impact of left ventricular pressure overload and hypertrophy due to hypertension on right ventricular morphology and function. METHODS: One hundred subjects with systemic hypertension and 50 age- and gender-matched normotensive control subje

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a common wombat (Vombatus ursinus).

A case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in a common wombat (Vombatus ursinus) is described. At necropsy, the heart showed symmetrical ventricular hypertrophy, a narrow left ventricular cavity, and dilatation of the left atrium. Microscopical findings in the ventricular myocardium included a strikingly disordered arrangement of cardiac muscle cells, in which adjacent cells were aligned perpendicularly and obliquely to each other, interstitial myocardial fibrosis, and arteriosclerosis of small intramural coronary arteries (fibromuscular hyperplasia). The changes, which were widespread in bot

Role of Oxygen Starvation in Right Ventricular Decompensation and Failure in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Right ventricular (RV) function and eventually failure determine outcome in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Initially, RV responds to an increased load caused by PAH with adaptive hypertrophy; however, eventually RV failure ensues. Unfortunately, it is unclear what causes the transition from compensated RV hypertrophy to decompensated RV failure. Moreover, at present, there are no therapies for RV failure; those for left ventricular (LV) failure are ineffective, and no therapies specifically targeting RV are available. Thus there is a clear need for understanding the biolo
