OBJECTIVE: Picosecond lasers (PSL) are increasingly used for treating melasma, with fewer adverse effects reported compared to Q-switched lasers (QSL). However, the incidence of hypopigmentation following PSL treatment remains unexplored in detail. This case series aims to explore outcomes of hypopigmentation following PSL therapy in patients with melasma, and explore potential contributing factors.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified four patients with hypopigmentation following PSL treatment for melasma, including one referral from another clinic. Across the cohort, 796 patient…

Reduced ocular pigmentation is common in Angelman syndrome (AS) and Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and is long thought to be caused by OCA2 del … on. These results suggest that impairment in GABRB3 downregulates OCA2 and indirectly causes ocular hypopigmentation and visual defects in AS and PWS.

Epicondylitis is the most common disease of the elbow. It is a tendinitis caused, in most cases, by repetitive motion of the forearm extensor muscles, and belongs to the group of occupational diseases that are related to work activity or sport. Intra-articular injections of glucocorticoids are often used by dermatologists, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and primary care due to their ease of administration. However, this procedure has potential side effects. There are a limited number of case reports describing atrophy and hypopigmentation of the skin as a side effect. The general indic…

Cutaneous changes after local corticosteroid administration may include dermal atrophy, hyperpigmentation, alopecia, and hypopigmentation. Linear hypopigmentation and atrophy after intralesional injection of triamcinolone acetonide has been reported in the literature as a very rare side effect. A 30-year-old woman visited our dermatology department for a linear hypopigmented patch with atrophy from her left foot to the lower margin of the knee. The lesion developed after injection of an intralesional corticosteroid. The patient was diagnosed with linear hypopigmentation and atrophy secondary t…

Background/Objectives: Cutaneous hypopigmentation is a common clinical sign observed in a variety of disorders. It may be congenital or acquired, localized or diffuse, and can range from benign to being associated with systemic conditions, including those affecting the central nervous system. Recognition of the key clinical features associated with each disorder is essential for accurate diagnosis and for differentiating one condition from another. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were used to prepare a systematic review. Search terms were: "congenital", "cutaneous", "localized", …

Horner's syndrome (HS) occurs when the sympathetic nerve pathway is disrupted. This case report describes a cat with acromelanism that developed unilateral facial hypopigmentation concurrently with HS after an oesophagostomy tube was placed. Both the hypopigmentation and HS resolved completely following removal of the oesophagostomy tube.

Hypopigmentation is a major problem in deep dermal burns. To date, no standard treatment is available for the post burn hypopigmentation disorder. Therefore, understanding the molecular and cellular events are of benefit for therapeutic intervention. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) and Fontana Masson (FM) staining of post burn hypopigmented skin (PBHS) showed an altered architectural pattern in cellular organization, cornified layer and melanin pigment as compared to the normal skin. This was confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) analysis of PBHS samples using specific marker cytokeratin 5 (CK5)…

Cadmium-caused head and eye hypoplasia and hypopigmentation has been recognized for a long time, but knowledge of the underlying mechanisms is limited. In this study, we found that high mortality occurred in exposed embryos after 24 hpf, when cadmium (Cd) dosage was above 17.8 μM. Using high-throughput in situ hybridization screening, we found that genes labelling the neural crest and its derivative pigment cells exhibited obviously reduced expression in Cd-exposed embryos from 24 hpf, 2 days earlier than head and eye hypoplasia and hypopigmentation occurred. Moreover, based on expression of c…
