PURPOSE: We reviewed indications and outcomes in patients undergoing ileal ureter replacement for ureteral reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: A 29-year-old man was admitted with a 7-day history of progressive non-specific abdominal pain that progressed to small bowel obstruction following ingestion of a 20-pence coin 4-months previously. Colonoscopic retrieval was unsuccessful. A subsequent laparotomy revealed a chronically inflamed thickened terminal ileum with mesenteric fat encroachment necessitating a right hemicolectomy. Histopathological analysis confirmed Crohn's disease with impaction of the 20-pence coin in a distal terminal ileum stricture near the ileo-caecal valve.

AIM: To evaluate the most important factors correlated with survival in patients with endocrine tumors of the ileum, both at the time of diagnosis and during the follow-up period.
METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with ileal endocrine tumors diagnosed in our institution between 1990 and 2004 were studied.

Intussusception is a relatively common pediatric gastrointestinal emergency, although the etiology in most cases remains unknown. In a small number of cases the lead point is a tumor or tumor-like lesion of the small bowel. We report an unusual case of a myoepithelial hamartoma of the ileum causing an intussusception in a 4-month-old boy. This is the second such report in the literature.

HISTORY AND FINDINGS: A 44-year-old woman who had moved to Germany from Kazakhstan 2 years previously developed right upper abdominal pain. A cylindrical mass was palpable in the area. There were strong intestinal sounds.
INVESTIGATIONS: There was an iron-deficiency anaemia (haemoglobin 6.3 g/dl, serum iron 4 micrograms/dl) and occult blood was found in the stool. Coloscopy revealed a lumpy mass external to the transverse colon but fixed to it, partially obstructing the lumen. However, on contrast infusion the mass could be displaced in to the caecum, suggesting enterocolic invagination.

A case of squamous cell carcinoma of the terminal ileum with no underlying duplication or inflammatory disorder is described. The neoplasm seemed to have originated from the surface epithelium, invading the wall and metastasising to the regional lymph nodes. The 65 year old patient was free of disease three years after having had the tumour removed. Previous reports of squamous carcinoma of the small intestine have been associated with intestinal duplication or metastatic disease from distant sites.
