Human In Vivo Validation of Frequency-Dependent QTI.

PURPOSE: The aim of this work is to investigate if q-space trajectory imaging (QTI) waveforms can be designed to probe QTI metrics at a single centroid frequency under realistic experimental conditions for in vivo human brain imaging. METHODS: Realistic diffusion encoding waveforms based on double-rotation gradient waveform and magic-angle spinning of the q-vector with varying encoding bandwidth, alignment of encoding spectra across encodings (tuning) and across axes (spectral isotropy) were designed to investigate the accuracy of the centroid frequency approximation. QTI metrics were compute

Deep learning "super resolution" versus iterative reconstruction: Phantom-based image quality assessment.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning reconstruction (DLR) algorithms have begun replacing iterative reconstruction (IR) in CT. Besides the potential to reduce noise, the application of artificial intelligence can also allow for "super resolution," allowing traditional CT systems to produce images with improved spatial resolution by training against higher-resolution images. This study aims to characterize the image quality produced by a DLR "super resolution" algorithm. PURPOSE: This study compares Canon's Precise IQ Engine (PIQE) Cardiac, a DLR algorithm, with the AIDR Enhanced 3D iterative reconstruct

Three-dimensional digital displays in congenital dislocation of the hip: preliminary experience.

Four patients with congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH) were studied on a research basis with three-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) or, alternatively, with three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (3-D MR). 3-D CT and 3-D MR proved useful in demonstrating the extent of anterior and posterior acetabular coverage. 3-D CT was limited to patients greater than 6 months of age with ossified femoral heads. 3-D MR, in contrast to 3-D CT, demonstrated the cartilaginous femoral head in children less than 6 months of age, while avoiding gonadal irradiation. Both 3-D CT and 3-D MR appear p

Leveraging medical imaging and deep learning for diagnosis of breast cancer using histopathological images.

Globally, breast cancer is one the life-threatening diseases among women. Breast histopathological image (HI) investigation is the most effective method applied for the recognition of cancer malignancy. Manual breast HI investigation is, still, time-consuming, abstract, and susceptible to human errors. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) became a possible and popular solution for medicinal image investigation owing to current developments in computer memory and power. Still, the CAD methods performance required to be enhanced to apply for practical reasons. In recent times, deep learning (DL) like

Towards more efficient and better multi-view and multi-modal retinopathy assisted diagnosis.

Fundus images are widely used in early retinopathy examination to prevent visual impairment caused by retinopathy. The retinopathy examination process based on fundus images can be mainly summarized in three steps: (1) ophthalmologists obtain comprehensive fundus information by jointly analyzing multi-view fundus images; (2) ophthalmologists obtain complementary lesion information by contrastingly analyzing multi-modal fundus images; (3) ophthalmologists diagnose retinopathy categories and write specialized fundus reports. To simulate the clinical fundus image examination process, we introduce

Multi-class cancer diagnosis on histopathological images with deep ensemble learning model.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. As the cause of one in six deaths, cancer causes a financial and emotional burden on individuals and a socio-economic burden on societies. Early detection of cancer significantly increases the chances of survival. In this study, we propose a computer-aided cancer diagnosis method that detects cancer on histopathologic images using current image processing and deep learning techniques and is intended to help diagnostic decision making. A stacking-based ensemble learning model using transfer learning is developed for the proposed cancer dia

Deep Learning for Pulmonary Image Analysis: Classification, Detection, and Segmentation.

Image-based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) algorithms by the use of convolutional neural network (CNN) which do not require the image-feature extractor are powerful compared with conventional feature-based CAD algorithms which require the image-feature extractor for classification of lung abnormalities. Moreover, computer-aided detection and segmentation algorithms by the use of CNN are useful for analysis of lung abnormalities. Deep learning will improve the performance of CAD systems dramatically. Therefore, they will change the roles of radiologists in the near future. In this article, we i

Optic Disc Segmentation from Retinal Fundus Images via Deep Object Detection Networks.

Accurate optic disc (OD) segmentation is a fundamental step in computer-aided ocular disease diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a new pipeline to segment OD from retinal fundus images based on deep object detection networks. The fundus image segmentation problem is redefined as a relatively more straightforward object detection task. This then allows us to determine the OD boundary simply by transforming the predicted bounding box into a vertical and non-rotated ellipse. Using Faster R-CNN as the object detector, our method achieves state-of-the-art OD segmentation results on ORIGA dataset,

Toward Semantically Faithful Diffusion Representation for Generalizable Retinal Image Segmentation.

Retinal image segmentation is essential for analyzing retinal structures like vessels and diagnosing retinopathy. However, the inherent intricacy of the retina, along with annotation scarcity and data heterogeneity, presents prevalent challenges in creating accurate and generalizable deep learning models. Diffusion models, while initially developed for image generation, have recently shown great promise for visual perception by leveraging the learned internal representations. However, these diffusion representations, which spread across network blocks (space) and diffusion timesteps (time), po

Enhancing semi-supervised skin lesion segmentation with text-guided pseudo descriptions.

Accurate segmentation of skin lesions in dermoscopy images remains challenging due to the scarcity of densely annotated medical images, as manual pixel-level annotation demands significant expert effort. Conversely, textual descriptions are more readily obtainable and can potentially provide rich semantic context for improving segmentation models. In this paper, we propose a novel framework leveraging text-guided pseudo descriptions to enhance semi-supervised skin lesion segmentation. Our approach capitalizes on the emerging capabilities of vision large-language models to generate approximate

Spatial-Temporal Consistency Based on Semi-Supervised Learning for Echocardiography Video Segmentation.

Echocardiography video segmentation is critical for cardiovascular disease diagnosis. However, it still suffers from the challenge of dual-level bias. This challenge derives from the frame-level bias in temporal dimension and the object-level bias in the spatial dimension on echocardiography video. To overcome this challenge, we propose a spatial-temporal consistency (STC) model based on semi-supervised learning for echocardiography video segmentation. This model aligns and fuses inter-frame and inter-object context-aware feature representations. First, the STC explores a temporal context-awar

Interpretable multitask model for clinical pathology image prediction and interpretation.

Deep learning (DL)-based pathological image modelling and analysis approaches offer transformative potential for early cancer diagnostics, yet limited sample sizes and a lack of interpretability often hinder efficient clinical translation. Here, we present the interpretable Multi-Task Digital Pathology Model (iMDPath), an end-to-end, highly explainable multi-task deep learning framework that simultaneously addresses these challenges by integrating data augmentation, diagnostic prediction, and visualization of pathological image features. The iMDPath comprises three modules: Augmentation (iMDPa

KAFSTExp: Kernel Adaptive Filtering With Nyström Approximation for Predicting Spatial Gene Expression From Histology Images.

Spatial transcriptomics (ST), known as an expensive medical examination, plays an important role in analyzing the spatial heterogeneity of tumors. When considering the correlation between tissue morphological patterns and gene profiles, predicting corresponding gene expression from pathology images obtained from affordable biopsies is regarded as an instantaneous and cost-effective alternative. However, accurately modeling the complex and nonlinear relationship between histological features and gene expression remains challenging. Existing deep learning models often struggle to generalize on l

ALPaCA: Adapting Llama for Pathology Context Analysis to enable slide-level question answering.

Large Vision Language Models (LVLMs) are increasingly used in computational pathology for image classification, description generation, question answering and interactive diagnostics. However, most pathology LVLMs analyse small regions of interest rather than pyramidal, gigapixel-scale whole-slide images (WSIs), limiting their use for tasks requiring whole-slide assessment across sub-regions and magnification levels. Here, we present ALPaCA (Adapting Llama for Pathology Context Analysis), a slide-level LVLM framework for WSI question answering across diverse cancer types and tissue sites. ALPa

Frequency-spatial feature fusion via a hierarchical framework for diabetic retinopathy classification in low-quality fundus images.

Low-quality fundus images pose significant challenges for diabetic retinopathy (DR) classification due to noise, blurred boundaries, and the loss of high-frequency details, which hinder both global contextual understanding and local fine-grained feature extraction. To address these limitations, this work proposes a Hierarchical Frequency-Spatial Feature Fusion Network (HFSF-Net) that effectively integrates frequency-domain and spatial-domain information for robust DR classification. Initially, this paper introduces the Spatial Prior-Aware Transformer (SPAT) Block, which incorporates spatial pr

Developing an intelligent model to detect the level of diabetic retinopathy using blood vessel pattern extraction in retinal images.

Diabetic retinopathy is a chronic and progressive eye disease in which the human retina is affected by an increase in the amount of insulin in the blood. Diabetic retinopathy, if not detected and treated in time, threatens the patient's vision and eventually causes complete blindness. Among various clinical symptoms, microaneurysm appears as the first sign of diabetic retinopathy. Accurate and reliable detection of microaneurysms is a challenging problem due to its small size and low contrast. The successful detection of microaneurysms will be more useful for the proper treatment of the diseas

Weakly-supervised ultrasound image segmentation with elliptical shape prior constraint.

Accurate pixel-level segmentation of ultrasound (US) images is vital for computer-aided disease screening, diagnosis, and treatment response evaluation. The weakly supervised methods have the potential to reduce the time-consuming and labor-intensive workload for radiologists, paving the way for further automation in the quantitative analysis of US images. Among these methods, the multiple instance learning (MIL) has proven effective and is often applied to prediction tasks with insufficiently labeled data. In US examinations, the elliptical region formed by intersecting lines used by radiolog

Comprehensive review on learning models of leukemia detection based on morphological information.

Leukemia is a blood cancer caused by the abnormal multiplication of immature white blood cells and is the 11th most prevalent cancer worldwide. Early and accurate leukemia diagnosis is critically important because it directly influences treatment decisions and patient outcomes. Delayed or inaccurate diagnosis leads to disease progression, a higher risk of life-threatening infections, and poorer survival rates. Conventional detection techniques, including manual microscopic analysis and complete blood count tests, are time-consuming, less reliable, and require medical experts. Accurate and time
