Data on features of regression and pre-regression developmental history in a case series of 53 girls and women with Rett syndrome are presented. Consistent with the diagnostic criteria, hand skills and verbal or non-verbal communication skills were the most common skills lost during regression. Play and motor skills were also lost in half the cases. Regression most commonly occurred between 12 and 18 months of age but was noted in a few cases before 6 months or after 36 months. The information about the individual peculiarities of the respiratory rhythmics of health people is produced in this article. It is shown, that the functional tests: voluntary hyperventilation, hypoxic hypoxia, their combined influence and natural sleep in normal and hypoxic conditions may be the convenient models for researching this problem. Acute histoplasmosis usually is asymptomatic and most commonly occurs in children. Symptomatic acute pulmonary infections range from mild to severe. Extrapulmonary lesions are common and oftentimes most prominent. In this report, we describe a patient with acute histoplasmosis with pulmonary findings as well as striking lesions within the liver and spleen.

Some remarks on the individual medical and social problem of alcoholism are presented. The most significant epidemiological data are reported and the most frequently observed medical complications, namely liver, pancreatic, gastroenteric impairment, alcohol and cardiovascular diseases, alcohol and pregnancy, are analysed. Some general remarks are then offered regarding the alcoholism phenomenon, the concepts of physical/mental health and alcoholism are examined and the personality of the alcoholic is analysed.

A 93% survival rate was achieved in 80 neonates treated for gastroschisis between 1979 and 1986. The purpose of this study was to evaluate interindividual variation in acute reactions to ethanol. Six young, healthy female subjects participated in a double-blind experiment consisting of two identical alcohol sessions and one control session where glucose was infused instead of ethanol. Selective immunization was adopted in the United Kingdom on account of doubts about the duration of vaccine-induced immunity. Selective immunization of a particular age group had already been established as an effective procedure with bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, so that practical experience was available. Initially, girls aged 11-14 years were vaccinated, but the program was extended over a 14-year period to include other groups, mainly susceptible women and other at-risk individuals. Cases of congenital rubella continue to occur, although there are signs of a decline in incidence.

We assessed the types of speech errors made in relation to the acoustic reflex. Ten subjects with unilateral stapedectomies were presented with consonant-vowel nonsense syllables in low pass noise at 70, 95, and 110 dB SPL in each ear. Hearing sensitivity for all subjects was normal or near-normal bilaterally. In the operated ear, speech intelligibility was significantly poorer than in the unoperated ear at all intensity levels.
