PURPOSE: Objective information about the central auditory pathways in vestibular schwannoma can guide strategies for hearing rehabilitation and prognostication. This study aims to generate this information using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).
METHODS: This is a prospective observational single center study including 35 patients with vestibular schwannoma and 40 controls. Subjects underwent 64 direction multi-shell DTI which was processed to yield scalar parameters [Fractional Anisotropy (FA) and Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC)] and probabilistic fiber tracking parameters.
RESULTS: FA v

Between 3 and 25 months of age, light and electron microscopic features of principal neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus of the C57BL/6 mouse were quantitated. This mouse strain has a genetic defect producing progressive sensorineural hearing loss which starts during young adulthood (2 months of age) with high-frequency sounds. During the second year of life, hearing is severely impaired, progressively involving all frequencies. The hearing loss was documented in the present study by auditory brainstem recordings of the mice at various ages. The cochleas from many of the

A new immunohistochemical method that utilizes carbodiimide as a tissue fixative was applied to study the distribution of histamine-immunoreactive neuronal fibers and terminals in the rat brain. Immunoreactive fibers were observed in almost all major regions of the brain. They were most numerous in the different hypothalamic nuclei. Dense networks of immunoreactive fibers were also seen in the medial septum, nucleus of the diagonal band and ventral tegmental area. A moderate density of fibers was seen throughout the cerebral cortex, in some parts of the olfactory bulb and tubercle, bed nucleus

The ventral division of the medial geniculate body (MGV) is the core auditory thalamic nucleus and is bordered dorsally, medially, and ventrally by shell nuclei; a caudal shell counterpart has not been identified. The nucleus of the brachium of the inferior colliculus (nBIC), long viewed as a rostral extension of the midbrain IC, contains neurons that project to auditory and adjacent cortex, blurring the thalamus-midbrain boundary. We hypothesized that the nBIC contains both thalamic-like and midbrain-like neurons. We combined cytoarchitectural, neuroanatomical, and molecular approaches to tes

Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) are widely expressed throughout the central nervous system. They are linked to G-protein coupled receptors and are known to modulate synaptic transmission. The data regarding their expression in auditory structures are not systematic and mainly originate from physiological studies where expression was used to support physiological findings. MGluRs are classified into three groups based on their sequence homology, G protein-coupling, and ligand selectivity. Our recent physiological findings made us focus on the group II mGluRs. The objective of this stu

Auditory neuronal responses are modified by background noise. Inferior colliculus (IC) neuronal responses adapt to the most frequent sound level within an acoustic scene (adaptation to stimulus statistics), a mechanism that may preserve neuronal and behavioral thresholds for signal detection. However, it is still unclear whether the presence of foreground stimuli and/or task involvement can modify neuronal adaptation. To investigate how task engagement interacts with this mechanism, we compared the response of IC neurons to background noise, which caused adaptation to stimulus statistics, whil

Auditory agnosia is an inability to make sense of sound that cannot be explained by deficits in low-level hearing. In view of recent promising results in the area of neurorehabilitation of language disorders after stroke, we examined the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in a young woman with general auditory agnosia caused by traumatic injury to the left inferior colliculus. Specifically, we studied activations to sound embedded in a block design using functional magnetic resonance imaging before and after application of anodal tDCS to the right auditory cortex. Before

1. Presbycusis, age-related hearing loss, is an ever increasing problem in our aging society. It involves changes in both the peripheral and central portions of the auditory system. The inferior colliculus (IC) has been shown to display age-related changes including decreased gamma-aminobutryic acid (GABA) levels, decreased glutamate decarboxylase levels, and decreased binding by GABAB receptors, as well as rearrangement of axon terminals in aging Fischer 344 (F344) rats. Age-related physiological changes have also been noted in the ICs of C57 and CBA mice. 2. Given the age-related alterations

Because of the consistent and prominent language failure in Rett syndrome, a patient with the characteristic phenotype was tested for subtle auditory processing deficits by visual reinforcement audiometry. In spite of excellent detection threshold and frequency discrimination, frequency sweep discrimination was at a chance level. This discrimination is normally performed by 5-8 month old infants. This observation suggests a defect in the specialized units of the inferior colliculus or higher auditory centers which subserve frequency sweep discrimination.

Neurons in developing sensory organs exhibit prolonged burst firing before the onset of sensory experience. This activity promotes neuronal survival and maturation in central sensory pathways. Within the auditory system, periodic bursts of synaptic glutamate release activate metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) on astrocytes, resulting in spatially and temporally correlated calcium transients; however, whether this phenomenon occurs in other sensory modalities is unknown. Using in vivo calcium imaging in the midbrain of awake mouse pups before eyelid opening, we show that retina wave-indu

The MYOC (GLC1A) gene has recently been associated with both juvenile-onset primary open angle glaucoma (JOAG) and typical late-onset primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). As a result, much scrutiny has been focused on the pathology of these diseases. In order to better understand the pathophysiology of POAG, we have been developing a mouse model of the disease. As a step in this development, we have investigated the expression pattern of Myoc transcripts in embryonic and adult mouse tissue using Northern blot and in situ hybridization analyses. Myoc transcripts were found in high levels in adul

A 70 year old patient with a small haematoma largely restricted to the area of the right superior and inferior colliculi is reported. Eye movements were electro-oculographically recorded 17 and 80 days after the onset of the haematoma. At the first examination, latency of lateral reflexive visually-guided saccades was asymmetrical, both in the gap task (central fixation point switched off 200 ms before the onset of the lateral target) and in the overlap task (central fixation point remaining switched on). Furthermore, latency of leftward saccades in the overlap task was increased, and accuracy

Anteroposterior diameters of the suprapontine midbrain, the pons, and the collicular plate were measured in 50 patients with various parkinsonian syndromes (Parkinson disease [PD] [n = 20], progressive supranuclear palsy [PSP] [n = 16], and multiple-system atrophy of striatonigral type [n = 14]) and 12 age-matched healthy control subjects by means of axial T2-weighted magnetic resonance images. While no differences in midbrain diameter were found between patients with PD (mean, 18.5 mm) and control subjects (mean, 18.2 mm), patients with PSP had significantly lower midbrain diameters (mean, 13

It is well known that quality of hearing decreases with increasing age due to changes in the peripheral or central auditory pathway. Along with the decrease in the number of neurons the neurotransmitter profile is also affected in the various parts of the auditory system. Particularly, changes in the inhibitory neurons in the inferior colliculus (IC) are known to affect quality of hearing with aging. To date, there is no information about the status of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA in the human IC during aging. We have collected and processed inferior colliculi of persons aged 11-97 yea

Neuroplasticity - the capacity of the brain to change as a response to internal and external pressures - has been studied from a number of different perspectives. Perhaps one of the most powerful models is the study of populations that have been congenitally deprived of a sense. It has been shown that the right Auditory Cortex (AC) of congenitally deaf humans is neuroplastically modified in order to represent visual properties of a stimulus. One unresolved question is how this visual information is routed to the AC of congenitally deaf individuals. Here, we performed volumetric analysis of sub

Sinusoidal amplitude modulation (SAM) is a key feature of complex sounds. Although psychophysical studies have characterized SAM perception, and neurophysiological studies in anesthetized animals report a transformation from the cochlear nucleus' (CN; brainstem) temporal code to the inferior colliculus' (IC; midbrain's) rate code, none have used awake animals or nonhuman primates to compare CN and IC's coding strategies to modulation-frequency perception. To address this, we recorded single-unit responses and compared derived neurometric measures in the CN and IC to psychometric measures of mo

Many neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) show sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs), which is thought to be relayed from the brainstem. However, studies with interaural phase modulation of pure tones showed that IC neurons have a sensitivity to changes in ITD that is not present at the level of the brainstem. This sensitivity has been interpreted as a form of sensitivity to motion. A new type of stimulus is used here to study the sensitivity of IC neurons to dynamic changes in ITD, in which broad- or narrowband stimuli are swept through a range of ITDs wi
