Biased information-seeking and information-integration in social anxiety.

Social anxiety is associated with an intense fear of social evaluation and rejection, often leading to avoidance behaviors and distress. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of how various cognitive biases may lead to the development and maintenance of social anxiety. While early models of social anxiety have focused on negative biases in perception, attention, memory and emotion regulation, more recent literature has started to characterize biases in information-seeking and information-integration, especially in the context of self-referential information and social feedback

Embeddedness of Earth's gravity in visual perception.

Falling objects are commonplace in daily life, requiring precise perceptual judgments for interception and avoidance. We argue that human judgments of projectile motion arise from the interplay between sensory information and predictions constrained by Newtonian mechanics. Our study investigates how individuals perceive falling objects under various gravitational conditions, aiming to understand the role of internalized gravity in visual perception. Through meticulously controlling the available information, we demonstrated that these phenomena cannot be explained solely by simple heuristics n

The Dissociation-Related Beliefs About Memory Questionnaire (DBMQ): Development and psychometric properties.

OBJECTIVE: Discontinuities in memory are the hallmark symptoms of most dissociative disorders but are also reported by patients diagnosed with related disorders, including PTSD. Memory discontinuity is most evident in dissociative identity disorder (DID), where patients may report amnesia in 1 identity for information available in other identities (i.e., interidentity amnesia). Studies indicate that even though patients subjectively report interidentity amnesia for material learned in, or pertaining to, another identity, objective findings show evidence of transfer of that material between ide

Manipulating sensory information: obstacle crossing strategies between typically developing children and young adults.

Individuals constantly adapt their locomotion to navigate through complex environments. However, little known about anticipatory strategies used by children during adaptive locomotion. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of manipulating visual and somatosensory information during a multiple obstacle crossing task between children and adults. It was hypothesized that compared to young adults, children would have difficulty with anticipatory motor planning and online control during a multiple obstacle crossing task when sensory information was manipulated. Children (N = 16, [For

Theta-encoded information flow from dorsal CA1 to prelimbic cortex drives memory reconsolidation.

Reconsolidation is the process by which reactivated, labile memories are restabilized. Disrupting this process induces retrograde amnesia specific to the reactivated memory, making it a promising therapeutic target for anxiety disorders rooted in maladaptive avoidance. However, the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying reconsolidation are still not fully understood, limiting its translational potential. Here, we show that inducing reconsolidation of a fear-driven avoidance memory in adult male rats increases coherent theta synchrony and directional connectivity between the dorsal CA1 regi

Food allergy: practical approach on education and accidental exposure prevention.

Food allergies are a growing problem and currently the primary treatment of food allergy is avoidance of culprit foods. However, given the lack of information and education and also the ubiquitous nature of allergens, accidental exposures to food allergens are not uncommon. The fear of potential fatal reactions and the need of a proper avoidance leads in most of the cases to the limitation of leisure and social activities. This review aims to be a practical approach on education and accidental exposure prevention regarding activities like shopping, eating out, and travelling. The recommendatio

Concussion in the Wild: Clinical Utility of Ambulatory Assessment of Symptoms and Everyday Exposures in Adolescents and Adults with Concussion.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the degree of correspondence between ecological momentary assessment (EMA) symptom ratings and cognitive performance derived from the Mobile Neurocognitive Health Project (MNCH) and clinic-based standard-of-care assessments in adolescents and adults with concussion. Environmental exposures, avoidance behavior, and symptom reactivity data were documented, and the clinical utility of the MNCH protocol for predicting protracted recovery was examined. METHOD: 89 patients (13-25 yrs) with concussion enrolled in the MNCH study on their smartphones within one week of injury. P

Action observation as a treatment option for fear avoidance behavior in chronic spinal pain.

Psychological factors play an essential role in the maintenance of various chronic pain states, with fear avoidance beliefs contributing to significant functional limitation and disability in chronic spinal pain. Fear avoidance behaviors are typically managed with cognitive-behavioral interventions such as graded exposure to feared movements and graded activity programs. However, attempts to make patients with high pain-related fear perform painful actions using graded exposure therapy can be very challenging. These fear avoidance beliefs in individuals with pain are usually acquired through p

Stress, job satisfaction, coping, and psychological distress among emergency medical technicians.

INTRODUCTION: Although several studies link job-related stressors with adverse reactions among emergency medical technicians (EMTs), more standardized research is needed, since much remains unknown about stress responses, coping styles and their consequences for EMTs. This paper presents the results of two studies. Study I investigated the relation between job-related stressors, job satisfaction, and psychological distress, while Study II investigated how coping is related to occupational burnout, job-related stress, and physiological arousal. HYPOTHESIS: Study I: Those EMTs experiencing grea

Patch testing 101, part 2: after the patch test.

After the patch test, the physician must interpret positive reactions in the clinical context of the patient's dermatitis. Relevance can be graded as current, past, or unknown. Counseling the patient on allergen avoidance is the most important step, and resources such as allergen information sheets and physician-generated safe lists from product databases can be used to help the patient both understand their allergens and avoid further exposure.

Coping With Adolescents Affected by Anorexia Nervosa: The Role of Parental Personality Traits.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) promotes psychological distress in caregivers who adopt different coping strategies. Dysfunctional caregiving styles exacerbate further distress in the patient promoting the maintenance of the illness. We aimed to assess the possible contribution of personality traits of caregivers to the adoption of different coping strategies to deal with the affected relative. METHODS: About 87 adolescents with AN were recruited. Their parents completed the Family Coping Questionnaire for Eating Disorders (FCQ-EDs) and the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised (TCI

Rumination induces a pattern of attention characterized by increased vigilance followed by avoidance of affective pain words.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the effects of rumination on attentional processes in relation to an acute experimental pain task. In keeping with recent theory and research, it was hypothesized that we would identify a pattern of attentional bias characterized by enhanced initial vigilance followed by avoidance of pain-related stimuli. METHOD: Undergraduate students were randomized to a rumination condition, which received threat-inducing information about the cold pressor task, or a distraction condition. Using the dot probe task, attentional biases to sensory and affective pain words were

Measuring emotional memory in the elevated T-maze using a training-to-criterion procedure.

The elevated T-maze, an ethologically based test, has been used to investigate the effects of anxiolytic drugs on memory and the relationships between neural systems involved in such modulation. This test allows the measurement in the same rat of two kinds of aversively motivated behaviors--inhibitory avoidance and one-way escape. The apparatus consists of three arms of equal dimensions, elevated 50 cm from the floor. One arm is enclosed by walls and stands perpendicular to the two open arms. Placing the rat at the end of the enclosed arm and recording the time to withdraw from this arm during

Cystic fibrosis through a female perspective: psychosocial issues and information concerning puberty and motherhood.

The purpose of the study was to investigate psychosocial issues concerning puberty and motherhood among CF adult females, to see how they had obtained and conceived information on these matters and how they would like information to be given. Fourteen adult CF females were interviewed. The majority of the women felt socially accepted and did not remember being ashamed over their delayed puberty. Thirteen of the women had been or were living in stable sexual relationships. However, the study revealed problems with destructive behaviour during puberty due to thoughts about premature death, secre

Loop formation and self-fasciculation of cortical axon using photonic guidance at long working distance.

The accuracy of axonal pathfinding and the formation of functional neural circuitry are crucial for an organism to process, store, and retrieve information from internal networks as well as from the environment. Aberrations in axonal migration is believed to lead to loop formation and self-fasciculation, which can lead to highly dysfunctional neural circuitry and therefore self-avoidance of axons is proposed to be the regulatory mechanism for control of synaptogenesis. Here, we report the application of a newly developed non-contact optical method using a weakly-focused, near infrared laser be

Event-related potentials and visual avoidance in blood phobics: is there any attentional bias?

The possible presence of processing biases for threat-relevant information in blood-injection-injury phobia has been largely neglected in the literature. This issue was addressed by recording the late components (P300 and slow waves) of event-related potentials (ERPs) in the context of affective picture perception, as indicators of processing resources allocation. Blood phobics and healthy controls were shown threat-relevant, emotional threat-irrelevant, and neutral pictures. Free viewing time (VT) was measured as an index of voluntary visual avoidance, along with self-reports of pleasantness
