Exclusion of phlebotomine sand flies from inhabited areas by means of vertical mesh barriers.

Vector control constitutes an important component of integrated disease control campaigns. Source reduction is not an option for phlebotomine sand fly vectors of leishmaniasis, because larval breeding sites remain either unknown or inaccessible. Thus, all control efforts are directed against the adult sand flies, mostly attempting to limit their contact with humans. We describe experiments using an insecticide-treated vertical barrier to prevent sand flies from reaching inhabited areas of an agricultural settlement. A 400 meter long section of the peripheral fence of Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, Jorda

Insecticide-treated nets utilization and determinants in Southeast Asia toward malaria elimination: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Malaria remains a major public health burden in Southeast Asia, where elimination depends on consistent community-level use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and residual spraying, despite limited regional evidence on ITN utilization. To address this gap, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess ITN utilization in Southeast Asia. A comprehensive search was performed across PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect, followed by PRISMA guidelines. Of 450 records screened, 28 studies published between 2003 and 2023 met the inclusion criteria for qualitative synthesis, with

Utilization of insecticide-treated nets among pregnant women in East Africa: evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) advocates the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) as a primary strategy for malaria control during pregnancy. Despite these recommendations, ITN utilization among pregnant women in endemic regions, particularly East Africa, remains lower and inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis comprehensively examined individual studies to provide a more robust and reliable estimate of ITN utilization among pregnant women in the region. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of ITN utiliz

Population impact of malaria control interventions in the health district of Kati, Mali.

BACKGROUND: WHO and its partners have adopted alternative control interventions since the failure to eradicate malaria worldwide in the 1960s and 1970s. The aim of these interventions has been to redesign the control interventions to make them more effective and more efficient. The purpose of this study is to assess the population impact of control interventions implemented at the community health area level. METHODS: The analysis used data from the health information system on malaria cases and interventions (distribution of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs), seasonal malaria che

Anopheline fauna and malaria transmission in four ecologically distinct zones in Cameroon.

Knowledge of baseline malaria transmission intensity in a given environment is important to guide malaria control interventions. In Cameroon, recent information on malaria transmission intensity is insufficient. Therefore, an entomological study was conducted in four ecologically different sites throughout the country to assess the seasonal patterns in malaria transmission intensity. Anopheles arabiensis was the main vector in six of the nine study sites, while An. gambiae sensu stricto was the most important vector in the other three sites. Clear differences in entomological inoculation rates

Exploring alternative insecticide delivery options in a "lethal house lure" for malaria vector control.

The In2Care EaveTube is a house modification designed to block and kill malaria mosquitoes using an electrostatic netting treated with insecticide powder. A previous study demonstrated prolonged duration of effective action of insecticide-treated electrostatic netting in a semi-field setting. As part of a cluster randomized controlled trial (CRT) of the EaveTube intervention in Côte d'Ivoire, we investigated the residual efficacy of a pyrethroid insecticide deployed in EaveTubes under village conditions of use. We also explored the scope of using existing malaria control technologies including

Video augmentation of the WHO cone assay to quantify mosquito behavioural responses to insecticide-treated nets.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) using pyrethroids have been the main vector control tools deployed in malaria endemic countries and are responsible for the dramatic reduction in African malaria cases in the early 2000s. The World Health Organization (WHO) cone test was designed to assess the rapid toxicity effects of pyrethroid exposure on mosquito vectors but has yielded no insights beyond 60-min knockdown and 24-h mortality. As dual-active-ingredient (AI) ITNs become more widespread, bioassays that can provide realistic assessment of single- and dual-treated ITNs (i.e. nets with

Pyrethroid-treated bednet effects on mosquitoes of the Anopheles gambiae complex in The Gambia.

The response of Anopheles gambiae complex mosquitoes to men sleeping under insecticide-impregnated or untreated bednets in six verandah trap huts was studied during the dry season in The Gambia. With this type of hut it was possible to collect live and dead indoor-resting mosquitoes and estimate the number of wild mosquitoes which entered, bloodfed on man, and exited each night. Bednets were treated with emulsions targetted to leave deposits of 25 mg/m2 lambda-cyhalothrin, or 5, 50 or 500 mg/m2 permethrin, diluted from emulsifiable concentrates (EC), or a blank formulation similar to the EC ex

Lessons learned from bednet distribution in Central Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. Use of insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) is an important preventive intervention. Selection of the best mechanisms for distribution and promotion of ITNs to vulnerable populations is an important strategic issue. METHODS: Commercial shopkeepers and groups of community leaders were trained to promote and sell ITNs in 19 sites in central Mozambique between 2000 and 2004. Pregnant women and children under 5 years of age comprised the target population. Sales records, household survey results and projec…

Optimal control analysis of malaria infection in children under 5 years and pregnant women under the influence of temperature.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major global public health problem, particularly affecting children under 5 years of age and pregnant women in regions where temperatures are favorable for transmission. Despite continuous control efforts, malaria continues to pose a significant health and economic burden, underscoring the need for rigorous quantitative assessment of intervention strategies. METHODS: A mathematical model was developed to analyse and evaluate the impact of three control measures: treatment of infected individuals, the use of LLINs, and indoor residual spraying (IRS). Due to the na

Malaria prevalence and associated factors among symptomatic children aged under five years attending Sheko District Health Center, Southwest Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children under the age of five worldwide. Although various malaria elimination measures have been implemented over the past decades, malaria remains a serious threat to public health, especially in tropical and subtropical areas. Ethiopia has set targets for eliminating malaria by 2030. No research has been conducted in the study area concerning malaria among children, who are the most malaria-prone segment of a community. The purpose of this study was to assess malaria prevalence and the factors associated with it among childr

Effect of long-lasting insecticidal nets with and without piperonyl butoxide on malaria indicators in Uganda (LLINEUP): final results of a cluster-randomised trial embedded in a national distribution campaign.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the foundation of malaria control but resistance of mosquito vectors to pyrethroids threatens their effectiveness. We embedded a cluster-randomised trial into Uganda's 2017-18 campaign to distribute LLINs. LLINs with piperonyl butoxide (PBO) reduced parasite prevalence more effectively than conventional LLINs (without PBO) for 18 months. Here, we report the final 25-month survey results. METHODS: LLINEUP was a cluster-randomised trial conducted in 48 districts in eastern and western Uganda. 104 health subdistricts (clusters) without ongoi

Attrition, physical integrity and insecticidal activity of long-lasting insecticidal nets in sub-Saharan Africa and modelling of their impact on vectorial capacity.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the primary malaria prevention and control intervention in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. While LLINs are expected to last at least 3 years under normal use conditions, they can lose effectiveness because they fall out of use, are discarded, repurposed, physically damaged, or lose insecticidal activity. The contributions of these different interrelated factors to durability of nets and their protection against malaria have been unclear. METHODS: Starting in 2009, LLIN durability studies were conducted in seven countries in Africa over

Changes in malaria burden and transmission in sentinel sites after the roll-out of long-lasting insecticidal nets in Papua New Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Papua New Guinea exhibits a complex malaria epidemiology due to diversity in malaria parasites, mosquito vectors, human hosts, and their natural environment. Heterogeneities in transmission and burden of malaria at various scales are likely to affect the success of malaria control interventions, and vice-versa. This manuscript assesses changes in malaria prevalence, incidence and transmission in sentinel sites following the first national distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). METHODS: Before and after the distribution of LLINs, data collection in six purposively

Triple insecticide resistance in Anopheles culicifacies: A practical impediment for malaria control in Odisha State, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In Odisha State, the control of malaria vectors has become dependent on synthetic pyrethroids, which are used for treatment of all approved long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The vast use of just one class of insecticide has led to the problem of resistance to insecticides in malaria vectors. One of the major malaria vectors in Odisha State is Anopheles culicifacies Giles. The aim of this study was to determine the resistance status of An. culicifacies to deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid and other common insecticides used by the National Vector Borne Diseases

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness against malaria of three types of dual-active-ingredient long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) compared with pyrethroid-only LLINs in Tanzania: a four-arm, cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have successfully reduced malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, but their effectiveness is now partly compromised by widespread resistance to insecticides among vectors. We evaluated new classes of LLINs with two active ingredients with differing modes of action against resistant malaria vectors. METHODS: We did a four-arm, cluster-randomised trial in Misungwi, Tanzania. Clusters were villages, or groups of hamlets, with at least 119 households containing children aged 6 months to 14 years living in the cluster's core area. Constrained randomisation

Insecticide-impregnated netting as a potential tool for long-lasting control of the leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis in animal shelters.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis remains a serious neglected disease, with more than 350 million people potentially at risk worldwide. Control strategies often rely on spraying residual insecticides to target populations of the sand fly vectors that transmit Leishmania parasites when blood-feeding. These programmes are often difficult to sustain effectively, as sand fly resting sites must be resprayed on a regular basis. Here, we investigate whether application of insecticide-impregnated netting to a surface could act as an alternative to residual spraying for controlling the American visceral leishm
