Weight bias in graduate school admissions.

OBJECTIVE: Whether weight bias occurs in the graduate school admissions process is explored here. Specifically, we examined whether body mass index (BMI) was related to letter of recommendation quality and the number of admissions offers applicants received after attending in-person interviews. DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants were 97 applicants to a psychology graduate program at a large university in the United States. They reported height, weight, and information about their applications to psychology graduate programs. Participants' letters of recommendation were coded for positive and ne

The psychological burden of nutritional treatment in inherited metabolic disorders: Navigating daily life.

INTRODUCTION: Inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases, many of which require medically prescribed nutritional treatment. Maintaining such treatment can impose a psychological burden on people with IMD and their caregivers. Previous research in our center highlighted the need for deeper insight into this burden. METHOD: This study consisted of a scoping review and semi-structured interviews. A scoping review, conducted in PubMed and PsycINFO, focused on psychological outcomes related to nutritional treatment. Semi-structured interviews were held with peop

Do special occasions trigger psychological distress among older bereaved spouses? An empirical assessment of clinical wisdom.

OBJECTIVES: Mental health professionals have suggested that widowed persons experience heightened psychological distress on dates that had special meaning for them and their late spouse, such as a wedding anniversary or the late spouse's birthday. This study examined the effects of such occasions on grief, anxiety, and depressive symptoms in a community sample of older widowed persons. METHODS: OLS regression models were estimated using data from the Changing Lives of Older Couples (CLOC) study, a large prospective probability study of late-life widowhood. Participants were interviewed prior

It's in the water: A qualitative exploration of the perceived effects of outdoor open water swimming on swimmers' psychological well-being.

Outdoor swimming for both leisure and physical exercise is a fast-growing activity in the United Kingdom. However, research into the perceived effects of outdoor open water swimming on psychological well-being is limited. Considering the inherent combination of physical activity, leisure, and nature immersion, the notion of outdoor swimming as a potential activity in the social prescribing initiative to enhance psychological well-being was investigated. Guided by Ryff's (1989) six core dimensions of psychological well-being, ten swimmers who frequently swim recreationally in the sea (n = 5) or

Violence in primary care: prevalence and follow-up of victims.

BACKGROUND: Primary care physicians underestimate the prevalence of domestic violence and community violence. Victims are therefore at risk of further episodes of violence, with psychological and physical consequences. We used an interview to assess the prevalence of domestic and community violence among Swiss natives and foreigners. In a follow-up study, we evaluated the consequences of the interview for the positive patients. METHODS: We evaluated the prevalence of violence by use of a questionnaire in an interview, in an academic general internal medicine clinic in Switzerland. In a follow

Motoneuron diseases: impact on health professionals.

The approach to patients affected by motor neuron disease (MND) and their caregivers requires specific training for the care-team. In fact, the progression of the disease, with the decline of physical--and sometimes cognitive--function, the increasing difficulties in speaking, breathing, and swallowing and the need of invasive choices, as the artificial nutrition and tracheostomy, constitute a challenge for the health professionals, often generating distress. For this reason, their cohesion and sharing abilities are fundamental. Psychologist assumes a strategic role in supporting and facilitat

Quality of life and overweight: the obesity related well-being (Orwell 97) questionnaire.

The development and validation of a self-reported measure of obesity-related quality of life, the Obesity Related Well-Being (ORWELL 97), were undertaken to examine the intensity and the subjective relevance of physical and psychosocial distress. The questionnaire was validated in a sample of 147 obese patients (99 females, 48 males). The Eating Disorder Examination 12.0D interview, a structured diagnostic interview for DSM-III-R (DSM-IV criteria for binge eating disorder), Beck Depression Inventory, Binge Eating Scale, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory 1 and 2 scales were also applied. Risk of psychological ill health and methods of organisational downsizing: a cross-sectional survey in four European countries.

BACKGROUND: The manner in which organizational downsizing is implemented can make a substantial difference as to whether the exposed workers will suffer from psychological ill health. Surprisingly, little research has directly investigated this issue. We examined the likelihood of psychological ill health associated with strategic and reactive downsizing. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey included 1456 respondents from France, Sweden, Hungary and the United Kingdom: 681 employees in stable workplaces (reference group) and 775 workers from downsized companies. Reactive downsizing was exemplifi

Relationship Values and Committed Actions Among Couples Coping with Prostate Cancer: A Qualitative Study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that prostate cancer (PCa) can affect both patients and their partners. However, research into changes in relational dynamics after PCa remains limited. This qualitative study explored the adaptation process through the lens of psychological flexibility (e.g., relationship values and committed actions) in couples affected by PCa. METHODS: Participants were recruited through various strategies, including online advertisements and local community posters. Both in-person and remote individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with eighteen couples (

Substance misuse and psychiatric comorbidity: an overview of the OPCS National Psychiatric Morbidity Survey.

There have been a number of national surveys of psychiatric morbidity, which have included questions on drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. These surveys have helped delineate the overlap between substance use and dependence and other psychological morbidity. There is a strong association reported between high substance consumption and other measures of psychological problems. This article provides an overview of a national household survey, a survey of institutional residents with psychiatric disorders, and a national survey of a homeless population. All three surveys used comprehensive and complex

The effects of attentional training on physiological stress recovery after induced social threat.

Social stress has been related to both physiological and psychological responses. The recovery of stress is influenced by the way environmental information is processed, i.e., what information is attended to and how it is interpreted. The present study investigated the effect of attention modification training on physiological stress recovery following induced stress. A group of applicants preparing for a job interview were randomly allocated to an attention training condition versus a control condition. Afterwards, they were asked to give an artificial job interview to a real life jury while

Psychiatric diagnoses in a group of astronaut applicants.

Between 1959 and 1987, the psychiatric evaluation of astronaut candidates evolved from a 30-h intensive examination evaluating applicants for psychopathology, and studying their performance under stress, to a 2-h clinical interview whose structure and contents were determined by the individual examiner. Evaluations done during these years applied both psychiatric (or, "select-out") criteria and psychological (or, "select-in") criteria. In an attempt to more rigorously define the psychiatric, "select-out" component, a standardized, semi-structured clinical interview was developed to identify th

Psychological Prehabilitation for People Undergoing Autologous Stem Cell Transplant: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Autologous stem cell transplant (AuSCT) improves survival in haematological cancers, yet often involves a lengthy recovery associated with a myriad of psychological and physical challenges. Psychological prehabilitation is recommended to improve functional outcomes by addressing psychological concerns and promoting optimal mental and physical health prior to AuSCT. Despite this, little is known about the implementation and experiences of psychology-specific prehabilitation for AuSCT. AIMS: The current study explores the perspectives and experiences of AuSCT recipients and healthca

Identifying poor adaptation to a new diagnosis of motor neuron disease: A pilot study into the value of an early patient-led interview.

This pilot study explored whether clinicians can identify patients who may not be coping with a diagnosis of MND early in the disease course by using patient-led interviews rather than psychological testing. Consecutive, newly diagnosed MND patients underwent a semi-structured interview six and 18 weeks after diagnosis, and completed SEIQoL-DW, ALSFRS-R, MND Coping Scale, MND Social Withdrawal Scale, SF 36 v2 and HAD. Three physicians independently used a list of factors from the literature associated with coping with a diagnosis of MND, and overall impression to assign patients from interview
