Acute intussusception and polyp with malignant transformation in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: A case report.

Intussusception is one of the most frequent complications of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and has been well described in previous studies. More attention has been paid to malignancy, which is another complication of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and which leads to increased mortality. Few cases of intussusception combined with malignant polyps in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome have been reported to date. In the present study, we report a case of intussusception and malignant polyps occurring in various parts of the small intestine in a 43-year-old male. In addition to repair of the intussusception and partial res

Sonographic diagnosis of juvenile polyps in children.

The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of ultrasonography for juvenile polyps in children and their sonographic characteristics. A retrospective analysis was performed of the ultrasound findings in 27 children who were diagnosed preoperatively with juvenile polyp within the intestinal tract by ultrasonography and then confirmed by colonoscopy, laparotomy and histopathology. The ultrasonic finding common to all polyps was an isolated intraluminal nodular or massive protrusion, associated with multiple mesh-like fluid areas of different sizes. In 25 children, surrounding pedicl

Oral and maxillofacial considerations in Gardner's Syndrome.

Gardner's Syndrome is a variant of familial adenomatosis polyposis (FAP) with a triad consisting of polyps of the colon, multiple osteomas and surface tumors of soft and hard tissue. The intestinal polyps have a %100 risk of undergoing malignant transformation, therefore early identification of this disease is very important. There are several symptoms of Gardner's syndrome in the oral and maxillofacial surgery, which can be discovered during routine dental examination. We report a case of a 25-year old male patient with Gardner's syndrome who has not any intestinal polyps but osteomas in the …

CLINICAL, EPIDEMIOLOGIC, AND ENDOSCOPIC PROFILE IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS WITH COLONIC POLYPS IN TWO REFERENCE CENTERS.

BACKGROUND: The main goal of this paper is to investigate the frequency, clinical profile, and endoscopic findings of children and teenagers submitted to colonoscopies. METHODS: Patients of below 18 years of age, diagnosed with polyps by means of colonoscopies at two reference centers of pediatric endoscopy were followed-up between 2002 and 2012. The clinical variables evaluated in this study included: gender, recommendation of colonoscopy, associated signs and symptoms, age of onset of symptoms, age at identification of the polyp, interval of time between the onset of symptoms and the endosc

Utility of Mesalazine in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis: Clinical Report of Reduction of Polyp Size in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis, and Safety Examination in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis Patients.

Mesalazine is the gold standard drug for treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). Here, we describe 4 cases of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) patients with UC that showed reduction of intestinal polyp diameter by mesalazine treatment. Of note, the effects of mesalazine on the development of intestinal polyps in FAP patients have not been reported, and we further investigated whether the short-term use of high-dose mesalazine (4 g/day) has harmful effects on FAP patients or not. The authors found that the treatment showed slightly adverse events in FAP patients. However, mesalazine tended to…

[Multiple hyperplastic colon polyps in a cow].

Reports on bovine colon polyps are rare. The present report demonstrates macro- and microscopically hyperplastic colon polyps of a seven-year-old German Simmental cow. Differential diagnoses (adenoma and adenocarcinoma) and aetiology are discussed. Even in cattle, intestinal polyps should be considered as a cause of intussusception.

Hyperplastic polyps of the stomach: associations with histologic patterns of gastritis and gastric atrophy.

Hyperplastic polyps are common gastric lesions characterized by hyperplastic foveolae with variable amounts of inflamed stroma. Their pathogenesis is unknown, but they have been reported to occur in association with various forms of chronic gastritis, particularly autoimmune gastritis and Helicobacter pylori gastritis. Comprehensive histologic evaluation of the background mucosal pathology in patients with hyperplastic polyps has not been previously performed. We studied 160 patients with gastric hyperplastic polyps and characterized endoscopic and histologic features of the polyps (i.e., loca

Inflammatory fibroid polyp of the jejunum causing intussusception: a case report.

Inflammatory fibroid polyp is a rare benign lesion of the gastrointestinal tract. This report concerns a 56-year-old female who presented with intermittent abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea; she had had partial intestinal obstruction over a period of two months. Plain abdomen showed dilatation of the small bowels. Abdominal echo revealed intussusception of the small intestine. During exploratory laparotomy a polypoid dumb-bell shaped polyp was noted as the leading point of the jejunojejunal intussusception, segmental resection of the jejunum was performed. Histological features of the poly

Pattern of pS2 protein expression in premalignant and malignant lesions of gastric mucosa.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern of pS2 protein expression in premalignant and malignant lesions of gastric epithelium. We analysed, by immunohistochemistry, the pS2 expression in six samples of normal gastric mucosa, 18 cases of chronic atrophic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia (IM), 10 hyperplastic polyps, 11 adenomatous polyps and 50 gastric carcinomas, together with the respective samples of adjacent non-neoplastic mucosa. pS2 is expressed throughout foveolar and superficial epithelium of normal gastric mucosa and this pattern is retained in chronic atrophic gastritis

Evaluation of clinico-pathological features and Helicobacter pylori infection in gastric inflammatory fibroid polyps.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps are rare mesenchymal lesions. The frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection in the gastric mucosa overlying inflammatory fibroid polyps and its relation with the histologic features of the polyps are undetermined. The clinico-pathological features of inflammatory fibroid polyps, the frequency of Helicobacter pylori infection in the overlying gastric mucosa, and its putative impact on the phenotype of the polyps were evaluated. Gastric inflammatory fibroid polyps diagnosed in our Hospital from 1998 to 2012 were reviewed and the histological. The histological section

[Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome with Adenomatous Change in a Fifteen-month-old Boy].

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a very rare genetic disorder. PJS carries a high risk of developing gastrointestinal (GI) cancer or non-GI cancer with advancing years. However, major symptoms of PJS in childhood are obstruction, intussusception, and bleeding from hamartomatous intestinal polyps which in majority of cases are not related to cancer. Generally, first GI symptom develops by 20 years in one half of children diagnosed with PJS. Children under two years of age who had PJS polyp-related intestinal symptoms are rare, and there have been no published report on intestinal carcinoma devel…

Pediatric juvenile polyposis syndromes: an update.

Colon polyps are a common finding in pediatrics and can present with rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, or polyp prolapse from the rectum. Histologically classified as hamartomas, these isolated pediatric polyps lack epithelial dysplasia and have no cancer risk. However, when polyps are present in greater numbers, or are associated with a family history of polyps or colon or other cancers, a polyposis or hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome should be considered. Using a case-based format, this article reviews the clinical features and provides updates on the three most common hamartomatous poly

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in children: high recurrence rate in short-term follow-up.

We have managed four cases of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) in children. Fathers of three of these patients had PJS. There was also a family … tudy, and barium enema, were repeated about once a year. Three of four cases showed recurrent small intestinal polyps, and one required a second laparotomy because of recurrent abdominal pain. In conclusion, patients with PJS occurring in childhood have a strong hereditary family history of cancer and a high incidence of recurrence. Careful follow-up examination is …

Prolapsing mucosal polyps: an underrecognized form of colonic polyp--a clinicopathological study of 15 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Prolapsing intestinal mucosa occurs in many forms throughout the GI tract. We describe 15 patients with polypoid masses in the sigmoid colon and histological features of mucosal prolapse. METHODS: Fifteen patients with colon polyps demonstrating endoscopic and histological features of mucosal prolapse were retrospectively identified from our database. RESULTS: Twelve patients presented with signs and symptoms that were nonspecific, but consistent with mucosal prolapse, such as occult or gross intestinal bleeding and lower abdominal pain. Three patients were asymptomatic. The polyp

Benign epithelial gastric polyps--frequency, location, and age and sex distribution.

Prospective investigation has been undertaken with the aim to study the frequency, location and age and sex distribution of various histological types of benign gastric epithelial polyps. Histological type--adenomatous, hyperplastic and fundic gland polyps--was diagnosed on the basis of at least three histological samples taken from the polyp. Biopsy samples were also taken from the antrum and the body of the stomach so that gastritis could be graded and classified, and the presence of H. pylori could be determined by histology. All 6,700 patients, who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endo

Tpl2 ablation promotes intestinal inflammation and tumorigenesis in Apcmin mice by inhibiting IL-10 secretion and regulatory T-cell generation.

To address the role of Tpl2, a MAP3K8 that regulates innate/adaptive immunity and inflammation, in intestinal tumorigenesis, we crossed a Tpl2 KO allele into the Apc(min/+) genetic background. Here, we show that Apc(min/+)/Tpl2(-/-) mice exhibit a fivefold increase in the number of intestinal adenomas. Bone marrow transplantation experiments revealed that the enhancement of polyposis was partially hematopoietic cell-driven. Consistent with this observation, Tpl2 ablation promoted intestinal inflammation. IL-10 levels and regulatory T-cell numbers were lower in the intestines of Tpl2(-/-) mice,

Chromoendoscopic observations on extension and development of fundal gastritis and intestinal metaplasia.

The development and extension of fundal gastritis and intestinal metaplasia were investigated by the endoscopic Congo red-methylene blue test in 44 healthy subjects, 106 patients with gastric ulcer, and 26 patients with gastric polyp. Follow-up chromoendoscopic examinations were made an average of 3.4 yr (range 1-10 yr) after the initial endoscopic assessment. Fundal gastritis and intestinal metaplasia developed or became more extensive with time in only 3 (6.8%) and 2 (4.5%) healthy subjects, respectively. In patients with gastric ulcer and in those with gastric polyp, fundal gastritis and in
