Meningoencephalomyelitis in horses associated with equine herpesvirus 1 infection.

During an outbreak of abortion caused by equine herpesvirus 1, a neurologic disease characterized clinically by dullness and ataxia occurred in several mares. Equine herpesvirus 1 was isolated from brain and lung of two severely affected mares. Histologically, both mares had disseminated meningoencephalomyelitis characterized by necrotizing arteritis, focal malacia in grey and white matter of brain and spinal cord, and accumulation of lymphocytes and neutrophils in paravertebral ganglia. Eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies occurred in foci of necrosis in thyroid adenomas of both mares.

Central nervous system vasculitis in cytomegalovirus infection.

A 51-year-old man received cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine and prednisone in the treatment of a small-cell undifferentiated lymphoma. Two years later, he developed a rapidly progressive neurological syndrome characterized by a decline in alertness, deafness, blindness and paraplegia. Examination of his eyes revealed severe hemorrhagic chorioretinitis. Leg weakness was thought to be due to transverse myelopathy at a thoracic level. He had a grand mal convulsion and died from terminal bronchopneumonia. Autopsy examination of the eyes revealed sweeping destruction of the retina due to

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease with recurrent encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions in neurons and multiple visceral organs, leading to heterogeneous clinical manifestations. This case report presents two rare NIID patients with recurrent encephalitis-like episodes, periodic prolonged hospitalizations, mimicking mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. CASE PRESENTATION: The first patient was a 63-year-old man with a history of migraines, who experienced two episodes of acute fever, headache, motor aphasia, behavioral abnormal

A case report of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease and literature review.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease with a characteristic pathological feature of eosinophilic hyaluronan inclusions in the nervous system and internal organs. The identification of GGC-repeat expansions in the Notch 2 N-terminal like C (NOTCH2NLC) gene facilitates the accurate diagnosis of NIID. Due to its rareness and high clinical heterogeneity, the diagnosis of NIID is often delayed or missed. Here, we report a case of NIID mimicking autoimmune encephalitis. A 55-year-old Chinese man presented with fever, headache, recurrent seizur

Recurrent headache and visual symptoms in a young man: a rare neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Patients with NIID may present with heterogeneous clinical symptoms, including episodic encephalopathy, dementia, limb weakness, cerebellar ataxia, and autonomic dysfunction. Among the NIID cases reported in China, patients often have complicated and severe manifestations. Therefore, many clinicians do not consider the disease when the patient presents with relatively minor complaints. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 39-year-old man showing migraine-aura-like symptoms for the pas

Accumulation of the sigma-1 receptor is common to neuronal nuclear inclusions in various neurodegenerative diseases.

The sigma-1 receptor (SIGMAR1) is now known to be one of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chaperones, which participate in the degradation of misfolded proteins in cells via the ER-related degradation machinery linked to the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Mutations of the SIGMAR1 gene are implicated in the pathogenesis of familial frontotemporal lobar degeneration and motor neuron disease. Involvement of ER dysfunction in the formation of inclusion bodies in various neurodegenerative diseases has also become evident. We performed immunohistochemical staining to clarify the localization of SIGMAR1

Ubiquitin immunostaining and inclusion body myositis: study of 30 patients with inclusion body myositis.

Distinction of inclusion body myositis (IBM) from other forms of inflammatory myopathy is significant from prognostic and therapeutic standpoints. This study retrospectively examines ubiquitin expression by paraffin immunohistochemistry in muscle biopsy material from 30 patients with IBM. Patients included 19 men and 11 women (ages 29 to 80 years; mean, 64 years). All biopsies were characterized by endomysial chronic inflammation, muscle fiber degeneration and regeneration, rimmed vacuoles, and angular atrophic esterase-positive muscle fibers. Ragged red fibers were identified in biopsies of f

Small bowel obstruction as a complication of disseminated varicella-zoster infection.

A 40-year-old woman with Sjögren's syndrome and mixed cryoglobulinemia, treated with corticosteroids, presented with small bowel obstruction temporally associated with cutaneous varicella-zoster (V-Z) infection. At laparotomy a portion of inflamed, necrotic small bowel was resected. Cells in the margin of the lesion exhibited characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies. This case report emphasizes the multiple organ involvement that can occur with disseminated V-Z infection. Despite the rarity of gastrointestinal involvement, this infection must be included in the differential diagnosis of th…

Spontaneous human herpes virus type 1 infection in a chinchilla (Chinchilla lanigera f. dom.).

A 1-year-old male chinchilla with a 2-week history of conjunctivitis suffered subsequently from neurological signs comprising seizures, disorientation, recumbency and apathy. After 3 weeks of progressive central nervous disease the animal was killed in view of the poor prognosis. A non-suppurative meningitis and polioencephalitis with neuronal necrosis and intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed at necropsy and by light microscopy. The brain stem and cerebral cortices were most severely affected. Both eyes displayed ulcerative keratitis, uveitis, retinitis and retinal degeneration, and opt…

Structure and Function of PML Nuclear Bodies: A Brief Overview of Key Cellular Roles.

Promyelocytic leukemia nuclear bodies (PML-NBs) are dynamic membrane-less organelles (MLOs) located in the nucleus that serve as regulatory hubs for multiple cellular processes. This review examines current understanding of PML-NB structure, assembly mechanisms, and their diverse functional roles. We discuss how PML-NBs interact with chromatin to influence gene expression, regulate transcription factors, and participate in protein quality control. The review highlights their critical functions in tumor suppression, particularly in acute promyelocytic leukemia, and their role in intrinsic antiv

Dual diagnosis at the neuro-immune interface: a case report of neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease with acute anti-CASPR2 encephalitis.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare autosomal-dominant, progressive neurodegenerative condition characterized by complex and variable clinical manifestations that can affect multiple neurological domains. This report describes the case of a 49-year-old female patient with a 10-year history of headaches, whose older sister had been diagnosed with NIID 1 year earlier through genetic testing and a skin biopsy. Recently, the patient developed dizziness and vomiting. Although symptomatic treatment reduced incidents of vomiting, her dizziness progressively worsened. It was accom

Three-dimensional structural analysis of papillary thyroid carcinoma nuclei with serial block-face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM).

Nuclear morphology of carcinoma cells is critical for the pathological diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, three-dimensional architecture of PTC nuclei is still elusive. In this study, we analyzed the three-dimensional ultrastructure of PTC nuclei using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy which takes advantage of the high-throughput acquisition of serial electron microscopic images and three-dimensional reconstruction of subcellular structures. En bloc-stained and resin-embedded specimens were prepared from surgically removed PTCs and normal thyroid tissues. We
