INTRODUCTION: Tobacco consumption has been proven to be associated with a huge epidemiological, humanistic, and economic burden. Hepatitis B is estimated to cause 500 000-900 000 deaths globally each year. WHO has targets for elimination by 2030; however, progress has stalled due to multiple barriers, notably a paucity of global funding and insufficient evidence on the economic burden of disease. This paper develops a mathematical/economic framework to address the following question: Given a particular population, a specific HIV prevention program, and a fixed amount of funds that could be invested in the program, how much money should be invested? We consider the impact of investment in a prevention program on the HIV sufficient contact rate (defined via production functions that describe the change in the sufficient contact rate as a function of expenditure on a prevention program), and the impact of changes in the sufficient contact rate on the spread of HIV (via an epidemic model).

A survey of the prevalence of chronic soft tissue disorders of the hand and wrist was conducted 3 years after an initial survey of workers in a midwestern investment casting plant. Setting national targets for reaching net zero is a key indicator of countries' commitment to climate action. But how effective are net-zero targets in driving down emissions? Here, we use a difference-in-differences model to study the link between statutory net-zero targets in 24 countries and clean energy investment from 2014 to 2023. We find that laws with target years of 2045 or earlier are associated with economically large and statistically significant increases in low-carbon investment, whereas laws targeting 2050 or later show no comparable average effect without frequent NZT reporting
