A recently proposed pathway for the scrambling of axial (uranyl) and equatorial O atoms in [UO(2)(OH)(4)](2-) (1) is refined using Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations in an explicit solvent (water) and with model counterions (NH(4)(+)). Hematoxylin is oxidized easily to hematein, an excellent stain for metal ions. If it already is bound to a substrate, the metal ion becomes a mordant linking the dye to the substrate. A new technique to remove Pb(2+) ions from a solution by using a phosphosilicate glass was introduced. The influence of Ca2+ on the formation of the aerial mycelium in 23 actinomycete strains was studied. It was shown that in concentrations up to 5 mM exogenous Ca2+ induced the formation of the aerial mycelium in 11 out of the 23 actinomycete strains tested. A method of producing technetium-99m (99mTc) radiopharmaceuticals is described, where reduction of pertechnetate occurs through stannous ions adsorbed on the surface of an infusion catheter. This leads to radiopharmaceuticals containing microgram quantities of stannous ions and that, therefore, results in minimal blood-pool labeling and essentially the elimination of tin colloids. The changes of magnesium in the serum were studied in 20 patients undergoing cardiac valve substitution procedures in extracorporeal circulation. The serum magnesium ions were determined before the onset of the anesthesia, at the beginning and at the end of the extracorporeal circulation, at the end of surgery and during the first post-operative day.
