We report the case history of a female patient who had received radical radiotherapy for a malignant meningioma at the age of 11 years. Iridium(I)-catalyzed regioselective B(4)-alkenylation has been developed from o-carboranyl sulfoxonium ylides and alkynes through B(4)-H activation. The sequential B(4)- and B(6)-alkenylation afforded B(3,5)-dialkenylated o-carboranyl sulfoxonium ylides in one pot. Eventually, two alkenyl groups, the same or different, were introduced at positions 3 and 5 of the carborane. Sulfoxonium ylide used as a directing group remains available for further functionalization and is converted to B-alkenylated o-carboranyl trichloromethyl ketones.

Glycidols prepared via Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation participate in asymmetric redox-neutral carbonyl allylation with good levels of catalyst-directed diastereoselectivity. Equally stereoselective allylations may be performed from the aldehyde oxidation level using 2-propanol as the terminal reductant. An epoxide ring-opening reaction using AlMe3-n-BuLi is used to prepare the propionate-based stereotetrad spanning C17-C23 of dictyostatin, illustrating how this method may be applied to polyketide construction.

A variety of Pd(II) complexes containing the neutral N,P,N-ligand bis(2-picolyl)phenylphosphine (N(py)PN(py)) have been synthesised and characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The neutral complex [PdCl(2)(N(py)PN(py)-N,P)] (1) has been selectively obtained in high yield by reaction of [PdCl(2)(NCPh)(2)] with the ligand in dichloromethane. The cationic complexes [PdCl(N(py)PN(py)-N,P,N)]PF(6) (2) and [Pd(N(py)PN(py)-N,P,N)(NCMe)](PF(6))(2) (5) have been prepared from the same reagents by addition to the reaction mixture of one or two equivalents of TlPF(6), respectively.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing gamma radiation has been shown to reduce neointimal formation and the incidence of restenosis after balloon angioplasty and stenting in clinical trials. However, the long-term effects of this therapy are unknown. A phase I clinical trial assessing the feasibility and safety of hyperthermia in combination with 192Ir brachytherapy (60 Gy) for the treatment of malignant glioma now includes 14 patients. A series of novel and modular ferrorence-based amino-phosphine-binol (f-amphbinol) ligands have been successfully synthesized. The f-amphbinol ligands exhibited extremely high air stability and catalytic efficiency in the Ir-catalyzed stereoselective hydrogenation of various ketones to afford corresponding stereodefined alcohols with excellent results (full conversions, cis/trans >99:1, and 83% → 99% ee, TON up to 500 000). Control experiments have shown that -OH and -NH groups played a key role in this stereoselective hydrogenation.
