Mycobacterial keratitis in a parrot.

Histologic examination revealed acid-fast organisms in a granulomatous lesion involving the cornea of an eye of a Maximilian's Parrot. Disseminated mycobacteriosis was also diagnosed. Antemortem attempts at determining the cause of the corneal lesion had been unsuccessful. Ocular involvement in birds with avian tuberculosis is uncommon. The corneal lesion in the parrot was likely initiated by a dysfunctional third eyelid.

Keratitis solaris and sunbeds.

Keratitis solaris is caused by ultraviolet radiation in the range 200-320 nm. The threshold dose for keratitis solaris is 40 J/m2 for short-term exposure. We measured the emission spectra of 22 sunbeds in the range 250-500 nm with a high-resolution double monochromator and calculated the exposure times for the threshold dose of keratitis solaris. Depending on the type of lamp used, the exposure times ranged from 90 s to 3.5 h. Lamps with short exposure times for keratitis solaris can induce keratitis solaris if protective goggles are not used (e.g., to achieve a uniform tan of the eye area) an…

Microbial keratitis in childhood.

BACKGROUND: Microbial keratitis occurs infrequently in childhood. The leading ocular predisposing factors are trauma and preexisting corneal disease. Many of the age-related risk factors in adults play a minor role in children. METHODS: The authors retrospectively studied 51 eyes with ulcerative keratitis in 50 children younger than 16 years of age. This includes all patients treated at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute during an 11 1/2-year period from January 1, 1980, to June 30, 1991. The criterion for inclusion in the study was a discharge diagnosis of microbial (nonviral) keratitis. RESULTS: …

Infectious keratitis in Baltimore.

One hundred thirty cases of ulcerative keratitis occurring from 1985 to 1989 at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore were reviewed. Positive corneal cultures were obtained from 40% of cases. The most common isolates were Staphylococcus epidermidis (28%), S. aureus (16%), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. P. aeruginosa was the most common in contact lens wearers. Antibiotic pretreatment did not affect the rate of positive cultures significantly. Bilateral conjunctival and eyelid margin cultures also were examined. An association was found between corneal and ipsilateral conjunctival isolates (P = .05). Gram s…

Studies on mycotic keratitis.

One hundred and fifty cases of corneal ulcers from the Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Madras, were investigated during 1980-1982 for the mycoflora. 68 cases (45%) were positive for fungi, comprising species of Aspergillus (36 cases), Penicillium, Fusarium (8 cases each), Curvularia (4 cases), Candida albicans and Mucor (3 cases each), Drechslera (2 cases) and Cladosporium, Cephalosporium, Pullularia, and Allescheria boydii (1 case each). Incidence of these fungi in mycotic keratitis is correlated with factors such as age, sex and occupation of the patients and is discussed in detail.

Keratitis in relapsing polychondritis.

An 11-year-old girl developed peripheral corneal thinning and superficial pannus formation with no other ocular or systemic signs. During the subsequent two years she developed inflammation of both ears, progressive collapse of the nasal cartilage, and polyarthritis. A clinical diagnosis of relapsing polychondritis was made. A spontaneous perforation of her right eye secondary to progression of peripheral ulcerative keratitis was successfully repaired. Treatment with dapsone, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent resulted in remission of her ocular and systemic disease.
