Genitourinary syndrome of lactation: An underrecognized postpartum condition affecting women's vulvovaginal, urinary and sexual health.

Postpartum care is increasingly viewed as a continuum of maternal recovery rather than a single visit at six weeks. Within this broader view, however, the genitourinary and sexual health of breastfeeding women remains insufficiently addressed. Genitourinary syndrome of lactation (GSL) has recently been proposed to describe postpartum and lactation-related vulvovaginal, urinary and sexual symptoms that may be linked to the hypoestrogenic hormonal environment of breastfeeding. During lactation, suckling-related prolactin secretion suppresses hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian activity and may mainta

Effects of different diet-induced postnatal catch-up growth on glycolipid metabolism in intrauterine growth retardation male rats.

A number of studies have reported the occurrence of long-term metabolic disorders in mammals following intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). However, the effects of dietary patterns during IUGR have not been fully elucidated. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of different dietary patterns during critical growth windows on metabolic outcomes in the offspring of rats with IUGR. Male offspring rats from mothers fed either a normal or low-protein diet were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: Normal diet throughout pregnancy, lactation and after weaning (CON); normal d

Simulated effects on dairy cattle health of extending the voluntary waiting period with recombinant bovine somatotropin.

We simulated the effect of extending the voluntary wait period by 100 days on disorder-frequency measures that were based on cow-years (from lactations completed during the 4-year simulation horizon), metric tons of milk yield, and lactational incidence risks. A dynamic stochastic discrete-event simulation model that focuses on clinical and subclinical intramammary infections (IMI), plus clinical metabolic (left-displaced abomasum, ketosis, milk fever) and reproductive (cystic ovarian disease, dystocia, retained placenta, twinning, uterine infection) disorders in dairy herds was used. Although

The Involvement of Prolactin in Stress-Related Disorders.

The most important and widely studied role of prolactin (PRL) is its modulation of stress responses during pregnancy and lactation. PRL acts as a neuropeptide to support physiological reproductive responses. The effects of PRL on the nervous system contribute to a wide range of changes in the female brain during pregnancy and the inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. All these changes contribute to the behavioral and physiological adaptations of a young mother to enable reproductive success. PRL-driven brain adaptations are also crucial for regulating maternal emotionality and well-be

Maternal undernutrition during critical windows of development results in differential and sex-specific effects on postnatal adiposity and related metabolic profiles in adult rat offspring.

It is well established that altered maternal nutrition may induce long-term metabolic consequences in offspring. However, the effects of maternal undernutrition during different developmental windows on sex-specific growth and metabolism in offspring are not well defined. We investigated the effect of moderate maternal undernutrition during pregnancy and/or lactation on postnatal growth and metabolic outcomes in offspring. Wistar rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups: (1) control (CONT) dams fed a standard diet throughout pregnancy and lactation; (2) dams undernourished to 50 % of

An update on thyroid disorders in the postpartum period.

PURPOSE: To review the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of postpartum thyroid dysfunction, and related management of thyroid disorders during lactation. METHODS: We reviewed the literature on postpartum thyroid dysfunction and management of thyroid disorders during lactation. RESULTS: The postpartum period is characterized by a rebound from the immunotolerance induced by pregnancy. Routine thyroid function screening is not recommended for asymptomatic women in the postpartum period. Testing thyroid function should be considered at 6-12-week postpartum for high-risk populations, incl

Milk yield dynamics as indicators for disease in dairy cows.

Dairy cows experience the majority of diseases during early lactation, and diseases are linked to milk losses. Fluctuations in milk yield were previously suggested to add value in the health monitoring of dairy cows. The aim of this study was to investigate the relations between health status during the first 56 DIM and 2 types of milk yield dynamics: (1) lactation curve characteristics and (2) dynamic indicators of milk yield derived from deviations from the lactation curve. Data on the daily milk yield and disease treatments of 4 previous experiments were merged and examined. Cows were categ

Environmentally relevant DEHP exposure during gestational and lactational period inhibits filamin a testicular expression.

Toxicological studies have revealed that DEHP exposure during pregnancy may induce developmental disorders, especially in male offspring, leading to morphological and functional alterations in the reproductive system by mechanisms that should be investigated. Thus, the aim of this work was to analyze the testicular toxicity induced by an environmentally relevant DEHP dose during development and its impact on FLNA, a protein that participates in the blood-testis barrier assembly. We used male Wistar rats exposed to DEHP during pregnancy and lactation. The results showed that DEHP exposure durin

The role of vitamin A and its pro-vitamin carotenoids in fetal and neonatal programming: gaps in knowledge and metabolic pathways.

Vitamin A (VA) and its pro-vitamin carotenoids are naturally occurring lipophilic compounds involved in several cellular processes and metabolic pathways. Despite their broad spectrum of activities in the general population, dietary deficiencies of these compounds can potentially affect pregnancy outcomes. Since maternal nutritional status and diet composition during pregnancy and lactation can have long-lasting effects in offspring until adulthood, this study presents an overview of VA and the role of pro-VA carotenoids during pregnancy and lactation - the nutrition, metabolism, and biologica

Harnessing microbial metabolism and nutrition to target the gut-mammary axis for better livestock production and health.

The gut-mammary axis orchestrates bidirectional crosstalk linking intestinal homeostasis and mammary function through integrated neural, endocrine, and immune pathways. Dysregulation driven by gut microbiota dysbiosis or metabolic dysfunction compromises lactation performance and induces mastitis via pathogen translocation and epigenetic reprogramming. This review systematically discusses the molecular mechanisms underlying microbial metabolite-mediated mammary development and lactation efficiency, evaluates the impact of gut-derived pathogens on mammary barrier integrity and inflammatory casc

[Hormonal control of lactation].

We studied the mechanism of normal lactation, especially the roles of prolactin (PRL) and oxytocin (OXT) in the initiation of lactation, the lactation in the women complicated with endocrinological disorders, and medical therapies for stimulation and suppression of lactation. The level of serum PRL increases as pregnancy progresses, and reaches to a peak on the day of delivery. Despite high PRL level, milk secretion does not appear during pregnancy, because the sex steroid hormones suppress binding of PRL to the receptor in the mammary gland. The initiation of milk secretion in puerperal women

Non-additive QTL mapping of lactation traits in 124,000 cattle reveals novel recessive loci.

BACKGROUND: Deleterious recessive conditions have been primarily studied in the context of Mendelian diseases. Recently, several deleterious recessive mutations with large effects were discovered via non-additive genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of quantitative growth and developmental traits in cattle, which showed that quantitative traits can be used as proxies of genetic disorders when such traits are indicative of whole-animal health status. We reasoned that lactation traits in cattle might also reflect genetic disorders, given the increased energy demands of lactation and the substa

Relationship of maternal high-fat diet during pregnancy and lactation to offspring health.

A balanced maternal diet is essential for proper fetal development, and the consumption of a nutritionally inadequate diet during intrauterine development and early childhood is associated with a significantly increased risk of metabolic and brain disorders in offspring. The current literature indicates that maternal exposure to a high-fat diet exerts an irreversible influence on the general health of the offspring. This review of preclinical research examines the relationship between a maternal high-fat diet during pregnancy or lactation and metabolic changes, molecular alterations in the bra

Short communication: genetic parameters for fertility-related disorders in Norwegian Red.

Heritabilities and genetic correlations were estimated for the 4 most common fertility-related disorders in Norwegian Red: retained placenta, cystic ovaries, silent heat, and metritis. Data on 1,747,500 lactations from 780,114 cows calving from January 2001 through December 2011 were analyzed using multivariate threshold sire models to estimate variance components for the 4 disorders in the first 5 lactations. The traits were defined as binary within lactation (0=unaffected, 1=affected), and each fertility-related disorder was analyzed separately with the 5 lactations as correlated traits. The

Effects of sixty-day milk yield on postpartum breeding performance in holstein cows.

The relationship between breeding performance and postpartum milk yield was evaluated using data collected in a prospective field project from 33 New York Holstein herds. Herds selected were enrolled in the New York Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative program and received monthly or biweekly herd health visits from the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine. Factors other than milk yield (e.g., postpartum reproductive disorders, inseminator, housing) that influence breeding performance were controlled in multiple regression analyses. Milk yield had a slight linear antagonistic relationsh

Disorders of calcium metabolism and parathyroid disease.

Pregnancy and lactation are associated with profound changes in calcium physiology. This can make interpretation of biochemical tests difficult during these times. Diseases of bone and calcium metabolism are uncommon during pregnancy but can be severe when they occur. These conditions are complicated by the need for dual consideration for the maternal and foetal health. These conditions are also much less well studied than related conditions that occur outside of pregnancy resulting in a reduction in evidence for and confidence in recommendations relating to management. This chapter will revie
